Hi all,

has anyone been able to deal with the following issues relating to Linux
on a Compaq Presario 1800T laptop? I'm using RedHat 6.0 out of the box,
along with the 2.2.12 kernel.

1. On-board Ethernet card. This is a tulip card, msg says
The PCI BIOS has not enabled this device! Updating PCI command 0013->0017.
   tulip.c:v0.89H 5/23/98 ...
eth0: Digital DS21142/3 Tulip at 0xfc00, 00 08 c7 03 21 cd, IRQ 11.
eth0: EEPROM default media type Autosense.
eth0: Index #0 - Media MII (#11) described by 21142 MII PHY (3) block
eth0: MII transceiver found ad MDIO address 0, config 1000 status 782d.
eth0: Advertising 01e1 on PHY 0, previously advertising 01e1.

RH brings eth0 up and I can ping myself, but not the outside world.
Needless to say, this works fine under Win 95. The BIOS is rudimentary,
there is no field to turn off Plug-and-Play OS (the way I have dealt
with similar issues in the past on other machines.)

2. Sound card is an ESS Solo-1. Is there support for this under
Linux? The OSS driver in 2.2 fails to do anything with it.

3. An LS-120 drive is installed instead of a floppy. It times out
when I try to use it under Linux.

Other than these points, and the fact that I needed to buy an XInside
license to run the Rage 3D LT board (although I hear that SUSE Mach64
probably works), everything is fine. Before I box it up & return it to
Compaq, can anyone tell me if the 3 problems above are hopeless?
Pls cc by email as I read this listserv erratically.

Thanks!

Gerald Cecil
