Dear all on linux-laptop list:

I am a novice on Linux and sent the following message to
Mr Arno Schaefer, the author of FISP at the following addresses:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Unfortunately the message was returned to me with the "user unkown"
remarks.

My questions are:
1 Does FIPS work in Windows 98 environment?
2 Does FIPS retain after partitioning ability to use external
device such as MO through PCMCIA and/or USB interface?

I also plan to install linux in Gateway 2000 PHC-G1DX4 SUBNOTEBOOK
in a similar fashion.
Any help from subscribers to this list is much appreciated.

Cheers,
Katsuyuki Yano

Dear Mr Shaefer

In the CD-Rom package distributed at a recent Linux seminar in Osaka,
I find FIPS included and this appears to be a life saver for my
purpose.

I am about to install redhad linux 5.2 in Japanese into a newly
purchased PC, Sotec e-one with 64 MB ram memory, 8.4 GB hard disk
memory Intel-Celeron 433 Mhz CPU. Windows 98 is preinstalled but
the recovery disks in CD ROM do not seem to include setup.exe for
Windows 98. I wish to use both Windows 98 and redhat linux in this PC.

Windows 98 and its application software together have used up about 2.3
GB of the hard disk memory already, leaving about 6 GB for Linux. I
wish to partition the hard disk into 2 parts, 4 GB for Windows 98 and
4.4 GB for redhat Linux. I have bought PartitionMagic 4.0 (Japanese
version) but upon reading its FAQ I find that using it will disable
connection to any external device such as hard disk, MO, etc. through
PCMCIA card.

According to a few Sotec Technical Support personnel I have contacted,
even if I format C drive for the hard disk, partitioning it by DOS 6.2
fdisk, ANY use of the recovery disks will bring it back to factory
default, OVERRIDING THE FDISK PARTITIONING, I work with MO everyday and
the PCMCIA slots preinstalled in Sotec e-one is both convenient and
indispensable for me.

On the other hand I do not see any mention of Windows 98 in the FIPS
version 1.5 or 2.0 included in the redhut linux 5.2, namely, Readme1st,
FAQ.doc, Table of Errors, Revision History of FIPS, FIPS 2.0 SPECIAL.DOC
and Technical Info on FIPS.

PLEASE note that Windows 98 preinstalled is a bilingual version in
Japanese and Englsih.

I have 2 questions:

1 Does FIPS work in Windows 98 environment?
2 Does FIPS retain ability to use external device such as MO through
   PCMCIA and/or USB interface?

Please kindly confirm. Your reply by return is much appreciated.

Best regards
Katsuyuki Yano
