Good first steps.  Keep in mind that if someone really wants your data, they'll
get it.  I could step around these measures by a) removing the hard drive, and
connecting it to another machine or b) removing the laptops battery, and the 
CMOS battery to clear CMOS settings.

If your data is truly confidential and important, consider using strong 
encryption.  You can use encryption either on a file-by-file basis, or by using
an encrypted filesystem (there's been some talk on linux-kernel about this
recently).

Moral of the story - if someone wants the data on your hard drive badly enough,
they will find a way to get it.  Just make sure it doesn't do them any good.
