Micron Transport VLX workaround

gday 

I have a Micron Transport VLX with 16M memory...now the people at Micron
insist that one has to send back the machine in order to get more memory
on there...

considering that I live in Australia (and I am a poor student) - it is
not a viable option to mail a notebook back to the US...

has anyone had experience with such a thing and is there a way to get
more memory without having to do the above?
