Yea, I know this problem well... I had a VLX as well, and was told
the same thing. I never did get around to upgrading the memory before I
sold off the laptop (a long, sad, story some long time subscribers of this
list might remember).
I can tell you that it is reasonably easy to change the RAM. It is
located directly under the harddisk, which is found underneath the wrist
rest, on the left side (hence the reason that side is so hot!). They are
what I think are called SO-SIMMs. Look like standard memory modules, but
only half the length. I am sure someone else can identify the exact type
they use, looks pretty standard for laptops of that type (P133, 2.5 yrs
old). Basically, just remove the wrist rest (screws underneath), then the
HD, and lastly the memory, then reverse.
I will not get into MicronPC and their attitude towards laptops as
sealed boxes. Basically, if you can open it w/o damage or any indications
that it ever was opened (relatively easy with a bit of skill), they will
never know you ever opened it, and in effect not violate the warrenty. I
say this not as one who misleads companies on a regular basis, but
probably out of spite for Micron PC's often crudy tech/customer support.
Of course my experience is 2.5 years old, so things might have changed.
One last thing, last time I dealt with them, their repair people
were idiots, and botched two repair jobs in a row (on the same laptop no
less). So be warned, but then again YMMV.
Anyway, hope this helps. If you want more details on the internal
layout of the VLX, ask me in private email and I will be glad to provide
them.
