I appreciate your response Declan, but you have slightly misunderstood,
my fault no doubt.

The fan works fine, and is practically new.  What I notice is that when
I use MS to watch a DVD that the computer stays much cooler and that the
fan is used more often than it is when working with the computer under
Linux.  I find that the keyboard gets rather warm, the part that is
right above the CPU, under linux.  I am hoping that I can get the fan to
turn on more often under linux to try and keep the CPU and memory a
little cooler.  I do not notice any system degradation as the system
heats up, I just assume that it (I) would be happier if it did not get
quite so hot.  The fan dose turn on under linux just not so often.

I suppose there is a chance that the fan is controlled by the BIOS, but
if this were the case I would suspect that it would function the same
under Linux or the DVD os (MS).
