Yep, that's true - an expert can easily disable the BIOS password, after
which you only need a boot floppy to break into the Linux system.

However, IBM laptops (possibly most others too?) can set a hard disk
password.  I've never used it myself but from the technical description
it looks like the hard drive itself is rendered utterly useless without
the password (unless you take it apart in a clean room and replace the
electronics).
