can use up lots of CPU to stream data. Some SCSI adaptors will work in
intelligent and polled-mode, maybe yours is defaulting to the latter when
talking to the tape drive, especially if it doesn't support disconnect/reselect
and so your CPU might be wasting time polling.

Trying to use reselect on tape drives can result in a world of pain. Propose
you get a CDRW instead :-)
Failing that, a second SCSI card?
