the problem probably be with robustness, not compatibility.
I bought a second hand THinkpad 380, which is a bit chunky but has a reasonable
display, 2GB disk, 32MB ram, 800x600 display which will run X ok, 2 PCMCIA, and
MMX/166 Intel PentiumI
I spent the equivalent of US$600 on it a year ago, and it's been very solid.
