low cost laptops

Due to various silly (but normal) budget constraints we have a big pile of
money to spend quickly on items < $1000. Id like to get my crew some
laptops for remote network diagnostics. These would have to run linux.

Any clues on low cost (<1K) laptops that are linux friendly?
