Back in the good ol' days when I was running Linux on a 386, the performance
improvement with going from 8 to 12 megs was huge.

Subject: Re: low cost laptops
GUI for a low end machine...
windows 3.1 works fine on this machine, it doesn't offer all we need though.
I installed Mandrake 7.0 with a no-maths co-processor kernel
on a DELL 433MC 8MbRAM 486processor upgraded 800Mb hard drive.
it has a great 256 640x480 colour screen 1Mbvideo RAM
Currently ~25Mb swap is being used with KDE and basic text editor.
I need a GUI, my special needs students cannot read and I'd like for them to
use it.
Unfortunately it takes 15 minutes to load KDE
kasteroids full screen runs at a frame every 5 seconds or so.
ksoroban looks great and plays well, but it's the wrong end of the gaming
spectrum...
xpaint and kpaint struggle to work....
I have tried twm and even if I configured it really well, I don't think it
would have the level of friendliness they need.
Can anyone say how $80 extra 12Mb RAM would help?
thanks
ps I loaded and tested everything on an HP5500 pentium100 and swapped hard
drives, great and very easy.
