Get a Mobile which acts like a good old Modem using AT commands. There are
quite a few of them. Examples Are Siemens S25, C35, S35. There is also a
Project called gnokii which is working on a Software for proprietary Nokia
Data capable Phones, but I don't think this is an Option if you does not
already have such a beast.

You might consifer switching the so called "modem" to v.110 Mode which is a
digital Mode and thus you don't have to wait that long for getting a connectin
than in analog Mode. Some GSM Providers don't support this though. Using v.110
you can also be your own Provider using isdn4Linux on the Other side. Using
the analog Mode you can use an Old 9600 or 14400 Modem on the Network side.
