This is the main reason I'm hesitant about using the 'linux-libre' name without blessing.
Simon, I do not think you will ever get the blessing from the two upstream maintainers of linux-libre, speaking from my experience, when I asked off list if I could use the name "freedebian" to publish the "home-cooked" kernel binaries, initially only for gcc423, built from linux-libre's pristine tarball using Debian's build system. The answer was negative, and the following comments were so negative that I do not think I should quote it on the list.
I also do not think that you need a blessing. Downstream packages in various distros never need any blessing from upstream. And more so if upstream is making changes that will make downstream maintainer's life difficult.
