I would like to try running XP inside of VirtualBox, but I am having difficulty visualizing the process of building the system. Please set me straight if I have this wrong.

1. Install latest Ubuntu desktop system (my favorite linux flavor).
2. Install VirtualBox (as part of step 1?).
3. Install XP.

I experimented on an older system, and I can't wait to finish my new hardware build so I can work on the real thing. VirtualBox rox.

For posterity, here are the (easy) steps I used to build a Linux guest running on a Linux host.

1. Install Ubuntu 9.10/64 bit desktop.
2. Using Synaptic Package Manager, install the virtualbox-ose package.
3. Applications menu | Accessories | VirtualBox OSE
4. Place the Ubuntu 9.10/64 disk in the CD drive.
5. Press the new button, and proceed as per the following link.

Without step 4, the virtual install fails, as it can't find the installation media.

BTW, the link is readable by a VM beginner (me) and provides a good introduction.

Why didn't I practice using my Windows 7 install disk? Well, after buying it, and signing after being told how irrevocable the purchase was, I read the fine print on the package and learned about something called the OEM Preinstallation Kit (OPK). After hours of Googling, I'm left with the understanding that I get 1 and only 1 attempt (i.e. system configuration) to get this right. Apparently one can install without the OPK (experts disagree on the legality), but the 1 and only 1 configuration limit still applies. I've also been told that I can beg Microsoft to let me try again if I really need to change something. Great. ;)

Given that I avoid Microsoft problems to the maximum extent possible in the real universe, I did my experiments with Linux, and I am reading as much as I can about how to pull off the W7 install.

linux systems with on demand access to XP apps, without having a separate XP system. It will be fun to see if this works.
