When booting my Linux (S.u.S.e 5.1) the system stops after the message:
Sound Initialization complete for about 30 sec.
According to Chip Magazin 12/98 this might be due tu search for a CD-ROM
Interace on the soundcard. With SBPro one can avoid this by passing the
parameter sbpcd=off at boottime. This doesnt work with the opti 92x chip.
Is there any parameter which could do this?
Thanks for help :=)) Ulrich

You have been fooled by windows. All modems speak Hayes commands. If windows
had a "generic hayes" option it would work with any current modem. You rarely
need more than an option for any hayes modem for most of the rest of the features
too. (FAX has been standardised and ATZ generally enables all speeds anyway).
Connect with kermit next time and keep a record of the prompts. This
will allow you to write a good expect script. There are 3 major
vairants I know of:
1st variation: authenticate with PAP when connected (what my ISP used to like)
ATZ OK
"ATDT <phone number>" CONNECT
[now hit pppd and it will use PAP, CHAP or MSCHAP]
2nd: unix shell and some portmasters (my ISP's current configuration)
ATZ OK
"ATDT <phone number>"
ogin: me
ssword: secret
[now hit pppd]
3rd varaiton: Various others sorts of annexes (old ECS annex)
ATZ OK
"ATDT <phone number>"
ogin: me
ssword: secret
otocol: ppp
[Now hit pppd]
me and secret are not a valid user and password combination. (Actually I
have 3 dail-up accounts at present...). My USR external olnly works reliably
with the lid taken off. I will be getting a V90 modem from someone other than
USR (according to my ISP people using USR modems have trouble connecting to
them).

Hi,
Look @ http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~ntp/
Then, in my ip-up script I have
# Synchronizing time with NTP-server
# next line updates the OS-time
/usr/local/bin/ntpdate -u ntp0.nl.net >> /var/adm/messages
/bin/date >> /var/adm/messages
/usr/bin/sleep 1
# next line updates the hardware-clock
/sbin/clock -w
/usr/bin/sleep 1
# End synchronizing
Works flawlessly!

Subject: Mount (or /dev/cdrom) problem
Date: Sun, 27 Dec 1998 16:43:16 GMT
I have a newly installed RH 5.1 system which I installed off the CD.
Now it cannot mount CDs anymore:
mount -o ro -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/cdrom as a block device
(maybe `insmod driver'?)
I have tried other cd devices, incl. /dev/hdc1 just in case. I have
also tried insmod isofs. Any ideas?
Thanks so much!

Ummm, that's what "foreach" loops are for.
cd /usr/X11R6/bin
for i in /opt/kde/bin/*
do
ln -s $i
done
As easy to undo as it is to implement... And even allows you to keep
record of where everything came from, in case you don't use some package
management.

Hi Ramin,
I'm no expert, so if a real guru has written to you please feel free to
ignore this. My only qualification is that I've got my Epson Stylus to
print after many months and lots of help from the newsgroups.
Firstly, can you tell me what the permissions are on your /etc/printcap
file and your filter file (assuming you have one - and I guess you do).
Also what are the contents of those two files?
Do you have a problem printing directly from GhostScript? i.e. does
something like this work?
gs @stc.upp -sOutputFile=/dev/lp1 <somefile.ps> -c quit
where /dev/lp1 is the device for your printer (substitute lp0 or whatever
if lp1 is not right); and where <somefile.ps> is a PotstScript file - you
might try something like:
/usr/share/ghostscript/5.10/examples/tiger.ps
Regards
Peter

IMHO the "real" solution would be for disk space accounting to work
by directory as well as file owner. If you own a directory then you
are "charged" for all the files in it. In shared directories the owner
of the file would be "charged" for it. A file with, say, 4 hard links
would count for one quarter of its size in each directory where it
can be found.

Neither the free nor the proprietary system can help you achieve this. You
can't sell anything without dealing with customers. Your choices are
customers, a boss, or subsistence farming.
