There is nothing on Compaq web site regarding this kind of problem.

Can anybody show, or compare, respectively, the main differences between
the various Linux distributions (features, usability, installation
process, ...)?
Does anybody know an article anywhere on the net?

I found one more Compaq model with exact the same problem. Watch out for
incompatibility in Compaq new PCs. eg. Presario 5834, Presario 7478 ...

Don't just talk. Go and find out what is going on NOW!

Hey, I'm not talking about Toshiba or anything else. I have tried quite a few
different things. I'm not that new to Linux any more. I'm not saying I exhausted
all possible solutions. But it doesn't worth it any more. Why should I spend so
much time on something Compaq's own support reps don't have a clue? Yes their
Linux knowledgeable support reps even strongly recommended not installing Linux
on Presarios.

It seems old (more than a year old) Presarios still support Linux. Only the new
ones. Eg. Presario 5834, Presario 7478 ... I tested personally with exactly the
same Linux boot.img disks. Not intentional?? Go figure.

Hi,

I'm not sure but I think it is program which configures the window-manager
menus and thereby adds the SuSE-entries.

Do you actually have the kernel source in /usr/src/linux ?? You should
see directories called arch, drivers, fs, ibcs etc.

Load the .obj file by tgif and then print it (CTRL P). Before printing you can
adjust the
printing format to use. This can be a real printer or a local file in different
formats (default is usually eps).

I just installed an Aopen AK72 with this sound chip and this procedure
worked for me. This procedure however is not for the faint of heart.
I had to compile 3 different set of source and add the lines listed
below to get it to work. Why does it have to be this difficult?
Nowhere in the ALSA documentation does it show you how to properly
install the drivers. I love linux, but these install procedures (all
of them not just this one) need to be simplified. Thanks ALSA for the
drivers they work great once installed.

Robert,
Have a look at Perfect Backup+ from Merlin Software. For
backing up drives on the network, you will need to install SAMBA. You can
even backup to devices on your network. So far, only complaint would be the
selection of files to backup could be made a bit easier.

I have a very large picture archive stored on an Apple Mac server, which I
would like to be able to mount (nfs style) onto a Linux server. The Mac
server already exports volumes to many other Macs in my organisation, so
effectively I just want my Linux box to "pretend" to be a Mac.

I've had some experience with netatalk, but as I understand it netatalk does
the exact opposite of what I require here - copying all of the files off
this large Mac server just isn't an option.

Has anyone had any experience doing something like this, and if so could
they point me in an appropriate direction?

Many thanks,

    Paul

It all depends on what he's trying to do - neither is correct if he's

Hello out there in Linux land..

I started Linux on my computer about a year ago with Redhat. Then I
became disgusted with it and got rid of it in favor of SusE. I am much
more satisfied with the SuSE distribution, but I was dissapointed that I
could not find the same kind of window manger I found with the RedHat.
I think it was the Afterstep, it had a dark grainy background and a wide
"toolbar" attached to the right of the screen. Is this merely an
alternative configuration file for afterstep? Does anybody know of this
and point me where to find it?

Also any comments on favorite windows mangagers would be
interesting.

George
