On RH systems, it's rebuilt on reboot.
Look at less /etc/rc.d/rc.local, or stop rebooting.

I thought the utility 'top' displays CPU time for EACH processor.
Did this change?
I used to get ~99% of the CPU reported for two
significantly large processes running on my dual PentiumII
machine. I recently installed RH6.0 on this machine.
I now get ~48% for each process.
Does the CPU percentage apply to TOTAL PROCESSOR or to
each processor??
The 48% indicator leads me to think that only one processor
is being used!
Is there another way to see if both are active, or is this
OK?

Save yourself a lot of grief and buy a CD. You don't need the
commercial RH CD and docs - one of the Cheapbytes CDs is fine it you
have basic technical competence. Have a look at

But "Plug n Play" is an ISA thing. PCI has something vaguely
equivalent, but it's not exactly "Plug n Play". As I understand it,
this PCI mechanism can't be disabled (it's built into the PCI bus
standard).
The whole "Plug n Play vs. jumpers" issue with internal modems is
historically about ISA modems.
I have never encountered any PCI device with IRQs and IO ports that
could be set by jumpers, instead of using the normal PCI mechanisms.
Has anyone else? The only vaguely related thing I'm aware of is the
legacy VGA support in PCI video cards.
Could someone post an example of such a device? (Any device at all,
not neccesarily a modem.)

Go to redhat.com and type in libstdcc++.so.2.9 into the search box. One
of the listing should be a link to this rpm package database site, with
a title something like "whatprovides: libstdcc++.so.2.9". Click on it,
and it will tell you which package you need to install to get this
library. An easier route might be to just look at your redhat cd and
see if there's a package called libstdcc++.......rpm (I'm pretty sure
there is, I think I had a similar problem once...) and install it if it
exists...

It seems I have a similar problem with WindowMaker which cannot load
libXext.so.6. so I think I won't be much of a help, but if you try
ldconfig -v | less
is libstdcc++ listed on the screen?

yes and no.
1) linux distributions are by and large source compatible. get the
source (which exists for most everything) and compile it yourself.
this is the standard way software is distributed. tar balls do
this. source packages which work automatically with your package
manager are also available.
2) linux distributions for the same architechture family will
generally be binary compatible. there's always fun with the
various versions of libc, but most modern distributions have both
libc5 and libc6 support.
3) linux isn't specific to a particular cpu. you can't expect binary
compatiblity across different cpus. for example, you cannot run a
linux-i386 wordperfect binary on a linux-sparc machine.

No. Your system has to be designed that way that it can withstand the
heat of a heavy working processor. If not, take it back to your vendor.
Your car (if you have one) has some cooling too. Now imagine you would
have to stop every 3 corners because your engine would run too hot.
(Maybe that's what traffic lights are for.. ;-))

OR WITH NFS
OR BY SAMBA
With Samba (make of your linux machine a samba server) you can easely access
(in both directions) the win NT client (or linux client or win 98 client).
You have at the samba server to use the smbclient commando (of course you
must share maps at the client side);
at the win nt OR win 98 side you can use net use / networkneighboorhood
So, I should advice you to learn Samba and/or NFS.

I'm not an RPM expert, but I thought that RPM, while trying to resolve
dependencies, also puts the packages to be installed in proper order. If
one installs a group of interdependent packages in one go (with a single
rpm -U command) it should be OK. Manual package ordering should only be
necessary when one installs them one by one, with a separate rpm command
for each package. So I think that it is either because some needed
package (with proper version) missing at the base and it is also not
included in install list.

I did a search for this, and nothing solid came up. I was wondering if
there's a multimedia player for linux which can play QuickTime files up

: around this?
Click around to the directory that you want to save to. You're right that the
filename is now lost. Now, hit Cancel, and then hit "Save As" again. Now the
directory is like you want, and the filename is there.

Do you have libstdcc++.so.2.9 ?
It should be in /usr/lib .

Subject: jpeg version
Date: 11 Aug 1999 16:44:29 -0500
Hello,
Whenever I try to open a jpeg image, I've been getting messages like:
Wrong JPEG library version: library is 61, caller expects 62
I installed libjpeg-6b-7.i386.rpm which is the latest rpm
I saw offered for redhat 5.2. It installs libjpeg and
libjpeg.so.62.
I looked at the symbolic links and see:
libjpeg.so.6 -> libjpeg.so.62
libjpeg.so.62 -> libjpeg.so.62.0.0
libjpeg.so.62.0.0
Any suggestions?

Hello everyone,
My network connected printer is printing my latex generated lanscape
postscript file off center (The left margin and some text are missing
and the right margin is too large) When vieweed in ghostview , it looks
right. The only thing is that ghostview says it is a bbox file size
instead of letter. Is there an option with lpr I have to use to print it
right?
Thanks,

You might want to check out xanim, available on your favourite Linux
mirror. You may need to re-compile it with support for additional
file formats (see the docs subdirectory of the xanim package once
you have un-tarred it for details.)

PC Power & Cooling makes one with some rather large fins, and a footprint
that's actually larger than the CPU. I haven't had the opportunity to
*really* beat on it yet, but I can drop down to BIOS setup (my mboard has
temperature sensors), and the CPU temp is usually around 40 C (60 C is
the warning level).
