I haven't seen that problem before on Linux either. For some reason
people only post here when they have a problem and don't bother
to mention it when they find the answer.
Note that you really don't need to go to the control panel to dial
out once the scripts are working. Just do:
/sbin/ifup ppp0 &
I use a script to do this, start netscape, and open a couple of xterms
with different foreground/background colors for telnet sessions in
a single command. I find it harder to do that in ms-windows.

If that's your concern, then just do this every time you install a
tarball:
prompt% tar tvf foo.tar > /my_installed_tars_dir/foo.tarout
prompt% tar xvf foo.tar
If you get in the habit of doing this all the time, then you'll
have records of where all the files in every installed tarball went.
For better certainty, make a wrapper script for tar that does the above
automatically whenever anyone runs tar.
(That's still not perfect because it doesn't provide a way to revert to
an older version of a file that got clobbered by a tarball, but it handles
the case where all the files in the tarball are new files. Versioning and
recovery of old stuff is not practical for general usage because it eats up
too much disk space (for some people it is needed, but it shouldn't be the
default behaviour, since it is very wasteful.).

This post constitutes an invitation to join discussions
concerning the MPDN. Beginning in January, 1999, I will
present each goal of the MPDN for discussion within
the MN-NETGOV listserv. If you are a stakeholder to
these goals, please join the listserv.

ABSTRACT
In preparation for my requesting Legislative hearings
in 1999, this article explains my vision of the
Minnesota Public Digital Network (MPDN), which is:
1) to provide every Minnesota citizen with a
secure and authenticated email address within
the mn.us hierarchy,
2) to assure that every citizen can use email
to dialogue with the elected and the appointed
offices of government,
3) to assure that every local community has a
high speed digital network and a repository for
the creative works and letters of the Minnesota
people, and
4) to collect the free software tools necessary
to attain these goals, within the Government
Information Freedom Toolbox (the GIFT), which will
be created as a byproduct of Minnesota State
government's conversion to free software.
EXCERPT
GOAL 1) Effective immediately, freeze (at current
levels or lower) all spending for non-free, closed
source, software. Establish a Legislative audit to
determine the Total Cost of Operation (TCO) costs
of non-free server and desktop software. Establish
a cost reduction plan that will result in the
elimination of spending on non-free software.
Collect all those monies, identified by the TCO
analysis, together into a revolving Software
Freedom Fund, to be administered by the Office
of Technology. Require that all further purchases
and upgrades of non-free, closed source server and
desktop software must be approved by the Minnesota
Office of Technology's, Information Policy Council
(IPC). The IPC will be charged to develop a
statewide model of the MPDN. The IPC will be
charged to connect every public sector worker in
Minnesota to the MPDN. Savings within the
Software Freedom Fund may be spent on writing free
software. Revenues of the Software Freedom Fund
must be spent, to endow the creation of free software
and free content, all of which, must be licensed
under the GNU General Public License (GPL) or a
suitable copyleft license.

Most mother boards (at least the one I have and my friends have that I
have worked on) have an option in bios to give an irq to the video card
or not. I would make it so it doesn't give an irq to the video card and
then try it. I know on some motherboard their plug'n'play support has a
slightly problem where it has a tendency to assign irq's to two devices
at once. My spacewalker shuttle board was like that until I flashed the
bios and installed the irq patch for windows95. If your problem goes
away I would remove the network card and video. Remove them from
windows95 and add them one by one. They should get an irq of their own
then. See if this helps.

PG, what version of Linux are you using? If it is redhat, use linuxconf, it
will walk you throught the entire process of setting up a dial-up. Just
type linuxconf at the prompt, or find it on your utilities menu in Xwindows.
BTW, make sure you are logged in as root, or you will never get it working.

Hmmm... I still have this problem after two weeks. There *must* be a
damn simple solution to this but every Linux resource seems to say:
"Ask the next guy..."
In the meantime, I've installed Win98 on the other half of the hard
time. Dailing in took all of 1 minute but Win98 has already crashed
innumerable times (and I mean innumerable). It will be nice if my
Linux ever works (the ppp part of it, that is). It's never once
crashed.
I tried wvdial but it also ended with the dreaded "PPPDeamon quit". I
tried EZPPP but still haven't managed to install it correctly (or it
has failed to install itself correctly...) I'll try KPPP.
I printed out the PPP HOWTO. What exactly is an LCP. The HOWTO states
that using the PASSIVE switch prevents the PPPD from exiting if it
does not recieve a valid LCP from the peer. Could this be the problem?

Go to www.stardivision.com . Be advised that it is a very LARGE download.
Write down the installation key observing the capitalization. The key is
quite a mix of alpha/numeric characters. If you don't get it right, you
will download it again. After installing it, go to help and register it to
remove the 90 day limit. The best thing to do is buy the personal edition
on CD. It's cheap enough. You will need at least 32MB to really appreciate
it. It runs great on 64MB. It will occupy up to 150MB of disk space. If
you are familiar with Win95/98, you will be very comfortable with it. It
occupies a lot of space, but it does everything pretty well, even windows.
It is a serious work environment.

Sure. Recompile your kernel with ISO9660 support. According to your
error message, that file system is not supported by your kernel.
