ITYM `symlink'. HTH. (/opt may well be on a different filesystem to
/usr/bin.)
Also, what about stuff other than stuff in /bin?
GNU stow does what you seem to be wanting, anyway.
> That'll hiccup if there are two different files with the same name, but
stow handles cases where you've symlinked a directory into place
because the whole directory is newly arrived with some package (eg
/usr/share/aclocal) but now you've got something else and it's added
more files into that directory.
It's really quite a nice perl script, if with a couple of minor
glitches in its error-reporting code.

You may have misunderstood. To do this you have to open a DOSbox (or
press F8 to boot to normal DOS), then you have to type "ATTRIB -S -R
-H *.* /S" to do this. This is not something that happens accidently
on a stray mouse click. It only happens because you *intend* it to
happen, and you go through the motions to *make* it happen.

Hi all...
1) I'd like to know if someone has heard of something to allow emacs
(xemacs) to emulate visual c++ 4.0/5.0/6.0 keybindings, most notably, is
it possible to select text by holding down SHIFT and stopping selection
when releasing shift ? For example, shift+right_arrow would add the char
at right of the point, shift+ctrl+right_arrow would add the remaining of
the word to the selection and shift+ctrl+^ would select everything
between a brace the point is supposed to be on, and the matching
brace... I'd really like to see these shortcuts, because four years with
VC++ ONLY have made it uncool to learn something else for my linux box
at home (I'm still working with VC++ at work).
2) Do you know of something in emacs to parse C/C++ code and shows a
list of functions and classes to allow for quick navigation thru code ?

Well, considering that my mail exchangers (and primary/secondary DNS)
are a 486 and a VAX (see http://web.irtnog.org/about/nodes.html ;-]),
heck yeah, a AXPpci33 should work just fine as a mail/Quake server.
Probably could do NIS and SMB/NFS on it, without loading it down too
heavily.
I've got an AlphaStation 200 that's the NIS master, NFS server, SMB
server (NT primary domain controller), AppleShare server, etc. I
don't think I've ever heard the machine really thrash, even when I go
to start up EMACS.
GK> The list of hardware in the design guide is quite out of date,
GK> I'm sure I could pick up a case, 4 gig SCSI2 drive, and some

If you're going to stuff this into a closet somewhere (going to be a
server, right?), why bother with a video card at all? Recent Linux
kernels can do serial console, and firmware knows to talk to COM1 when
a keyboard isn't plugged in; spring a couple of bux for an old WY50 or
VT200 (or a serial cable to another computer) and you'll be in
business.
It depends on what you want to do. I use the AlphaStation as a
workstation, too, so I went ahead and bought a monitor and video
card. I've got a Stealth 64, but I'd recommend you avoid S3-based
cards. I've had nothing but problems with X and the Stealth 64.
A really good idea would be to spend money on memory and storage
space. 64 Mbytes is a minimum, in my opinion.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I use Linux Redhat 5.2 with kernel 2.0.36.
For one of my application, I need to create two semaphores, one for
clients applications, and another for the server process. The creation
works fine. If I do an ipcs command, I see the two semaphores.
I can also see the values of each semaphores. My problem arise when I
want to signal one of the semaphores, so that the process can treat
acordingly (either that the server receive's data from the client, or
vice versa throught shared memory).
When I want to signal, I call the proper function and the proper
semaphore ID. The other end is in waiting mode. The operation "works"
in the respect that the signaling process exits with and error message :
invalid argument
The receiving process receives the proper info but the signaling exits.
Here is the code For the signaling and waiting function :
int waitsem(int semid) /* wait on a semaphore */
{
struct sembuf p_buf;
p_buf.sem_num = 0;
p_buf.sem_op = -1;
p_buf.sem_flg = SEM_UNDO;
if (semop(semid, &p_buf, 1) == -1) {
perror("waitsem() failed");
exit(1);
} else
return (0);
}
int postsem(int semid) /* post to a semaphore */
{
struct sembuf v_buf;
v_buf.sem_num = 0;
v_buf.sem_op = 1;
v_buf.sem_flg = SEM_UNDO;
if (semop(semid, &v_buf, 1) == -1) {
perror("postsem()
failed"); Line that
gives error on signal
exit(1);
} else
return (0);
}
Only one semaphore is created in the creation. In the creation routine,
it verifies that the semaphore exist, else it creates it.

I did a little more troubleshooting and have found out the following
things. The ` characters appear in the terminal every 70 seconds like
clockwork, but only if the terminal window has the focus. If it
doesn't have the focus, the characters are not stored in a buffer, so
that when xterm does get the focus again, there is not a quick stream
of a bunch of them. I have doublechecked my keyboard entries in
/etc/XF86Config and I have tried both the microsoft setting and the
pc102 settings. neither helped (I have one of those funky split
keyboards. I don't know if it is a "true microsoft natural" keyboard,
but it is brand new. I got it with my new dell computer). Finally,
this only happens in terminal windows. It does not happen in text
editors or anything else. It will however happen in any application
that runs "full screen" in the terminal (like pico).
thanks.

These are questions I have after reading the Sound HOWTO:
1- How do I determine what version of the sound driver I'm running
(and whether I'm running the sound driver at all?). How do I
know which modules are loaded? Installation of Linux doesn't seem
to generate a .config for me to look at to see what's loaded.
2- The HOWTO mentions that the kernel configuration of "soundblaster 16"
is appropriate for the AWE32. I have the AWE 64 Gold and Creative's
2nd newest audio card, the Soundblaster PCI 128. Is there a better
configuration for these two cards? The AWE 64 Gold in particular has
a lot of onboard programming that (I think) will go to waste if Linux
treats it as an AWE32.
3- I'm not knowledgable enough to know if the 4Front commercial sound
driver is for me. The price is right, but according to the HOWTO,
many features are not supported like wave sythesis, MIDI and DSP.
The HOWTO is almost a year old. Can any audiophiles give me adivce
on whether this is a good investment?
Thanks!

Deciding I had a compatibility problem between Caldera and Redhat I

you are correct in that wavetable is not supported in OSS but are you really
going to be using wavetable? if not then the basic driver is fine and it
can be set up in under 5 min. also if you buy the oss from 4Front they give
you free updates until 2001 so when wavetable becomes available you can get
it for free having already bought the oss. I am almost sure that the PCI

I have it and I swear by it :) you can email 4Front and ask them about the
MIDI they are pretty good about gettng back to people who ask questions.
plus you can DL a "demo" verison for free to try out. if it does not do what
you need then you simply do not buy it :)

Look at the end of the file
~/GNUstep/Library/AfterStep/non-configurable/desk0/feel.16bpp
if yoa are usung 16 color bits. Otherwise change the nuber 16 to whatever
colordepth you have. In the end of this file is Aftersteps aignment of
keykombinations among others.
