I have an Epson ActionScanner II parallel port connected scanner which
uses the TWAIN drivers. I have successfully configured it on a Red Hat
5.1 machine running 2.0.34.
Have not used it in a while since I enjoy my Linux laptop more. Let me
find the details on setting it up.
Your kernel must be configured for lp support of course... in "dmesg"
you should see
...
lp0 at 0x03bc, (polling)
lp1 at 0x0378, (polling)
...
Your scanner should make some initial noise during boot, just like in
windows 95, provided it normally makes a noise when the parallel port it
scanned.
I have the package sane-0.74 installed. I just checked freshmeat.net
and looks like newer versions of sane are out, but the old version works
fine.
Sane home page is http://www.mostang.com/sane/
...
Sane configuration
My scanner is on lp1 which from above in dmesg you can see is 0x0378.
in /usr/local/etc/sane.d I created a epson.conf file.
The contents of the file is simply:
# /usr/local/etc/sane.d/epson.conf
0x378
...
Then simply
# scanimage epson
or better
# xscanimage epson
...
If I remember.. I could only get scanning to work as root.
I banged my head for hours on this problem, much like yourself... I had
one nice happy dance once this was working... then proceeded to not use
since October 15th (timestamp on my epson.conf file).
Let me know if you have any questions... remove what is obviously not
real from my email address to talk directly.
Sincerely,
Todd A. Wood

Some games are more usable with a mouse and keyboard.
Other computers used to come with better game
controllers than what comes with consoles these days.

according to the Redhat Linux Unleased 2nd edition, you can change the
root password by:-
1 Boot the system with the boot disk
2 Mount the Root partion
3 Edit the etc/passwd file to remove any password for root
4 reboot the hard disk
5 set a new password for root
providing the system is "unsecured"
Try it anyway

It comes with Redhat in the XFree86-XF86Setup rpm. You should be able to

Do what I did and buy a better game controller for your console. You can get
them for under $10.00 at your local Walmart/Kmart...

It seems to be some problem with the sound config. What does the sound
part of .config look like? It could be that you have CONFIG_SB and
CONFIG_SOUND set to y or m but CONFIG_AUDIO (/dev/audio and
/dev/dsp support) unset. I would
do the following:
make mrproper
make config (or menuconfig or xconfig)
and check that all the sound driver settings are correct
then
make dep
make zImage
make modules
Since you are compiling a new kernel, you might as well get 2.0.36 (latest
stable version).

For what it's worth, Chris is correct. Let's not fool ourselves into

What next, 32 meg ram to get Pico going? I run wp8 on a dx66 with 16 meg
ram and it's more than fine, and no, I don't have low expectations. SO
is a memory pig because it forces you to launch that silly "desktop"
environment everytime you want to use a simple app. Come on, a desktop,
as far as your computer is concerned, is either what it sits on or just a
manner of speaking. We don't really _need_ to have one launched
everytime we come to the computer, despite whatever conditioning MS may
have succeeded at instilling in us.

I don't know about that. I have worked on the code for several PBX's and I
can say that most RTOS kernels get pretty cranky if you interrupt them in
the wrong time. What an RTOS does do is make sure that very little is in
the kernel. Why do you think RTOS designs have been micro-kernel like
since long before the term was a fad.
I have also seen some real-time enhancements to Linux that run "under" the
Linux kernel. I sure wish I was using them instead of company M's "new
technology" OS that tests the blue pixles of my monitor often.

How does a network stack like TCP/IP affect the kernel. AFAIK, it is
usually a task that responds to messages from the RTOS kernel that the I/O
hardware caused in interrupt...
