I noticed the same problem. It seems to me that it is some kind of bug
in motif. Version 4.5 of communicator doesn't have the problem. You
could also try 4.08 (or whatever is the latest).
Also the libc5 versions don't seems to have the problem. However in
that case you would need to get some extra libs to make it work at
all. (Netscape will give a bus error on standard libc5.)
Hope this helps.

That's short for "regular expressions."
They're one of the basic things taught in a computing theory course, and
prove remarkably useful in practice.
Basic idea: they represent a way of describing patterns to match against
strings. A set of "operators" may be used to provide a fairly rich set
of pattern matching functionality.
Thus,
"look*"
is a regular expression that would be used to search for expressions
containing "look" followed by anything else.
It would match:
look
looking
I was looking for something
It would *not* match:
loook
this is a line that doesn't contain l o o k in a "raw" form
The regular expression "a*b" would match:
aaabbbb
ab
a b
This is a string that contains several letter a's and one letter b
But not
ba
bbbbbbba
There tend to be options to group bits of expressions
(this|that) anything
searches for expressions looking either like "this anything" or "that anything"
Searching for
[a-z]
would find anything containing letters in the range a..z
Perl's regex handling adds in "groupings," where
:\d*:
is a regular expression that looks for a colon followed by a sequence
of digits (0..9) followed by another colon.
The theoretical CS part of this is that a regular expression may be
mapped directly to a finite state automaton, which means that you can
always represent REs in a reasonably efficient manner.
regexes are *really* useful for searching text, and to some extent
for parsing text. They are of limited power (finite state automatons
have limited power compared to Turing machines), but are really useful
for a lot of problems.

Hi,
Having bought a book on Linux, and successfully installed it on a test
computer (Compaq P233 3GB) at work, using the whole drive for Linux, I'm
having a go on my own computer, at home, trying to keep the Windows 98
stuff that I already have.
I'm having problems installing Redhat v5.1 on a Dell 450Mhz, 12.9GB HD,
128 MB RAM.
I have downloaded fips.exe v2.0 and 'cut' the disk into 8.389GB and 4GB.
While running the Linux boot disk in the installation routine, I get to
setting up the Linux partition. (pg 50 in the manual :)
My installation looks something like this (in Redhat's own partitioning
thingy):
Current Disk Partitions:
Mount Point Requested Actual Type
hda1.........8393M......8393M...0x0c
hda2.........4000M......4000M...0x0f
Drive Summaries:
Drive Geom[C/H/S] Total Used Free
hda [1024/255/63] 8032M 12393 -4361
In fdisk [expert mode] the listing of partitions WARNS that partition 1
and 2 overlap!! Is this bad?
Other things I've tried:
fdisk in DOS:
- using (and then not) the support for large disks, I've created an
Extended Partition called D:
- deleting the extended partition, and then running the Linux
Installation
I'm concerned about the following:
1. The installation routine refers to version 2.0!!
2. The partition type (above) is not in the list of recognised
partitioned.
3. The Free space is negative.
What I'm really looking for is someone to tell me I'm 'doing it wrong'
and to re-assure me that I won't have to re-do the entire drive :)
And, of course, to point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance.
Derek

:> You can't; there's no such thing. But try these:
: There isn't?
I think what he was getting at was that there is no limit to what linux can
do.
Someone wants a new command?
They can add it.
The moment that happens, a previously complete book is no longer complete.
If you get my drift.

hey
this all happened coz I read an email that I though was amusing
at exactly the same time that my frustrations at trying to
access my cdrom via the linux command line
I get silly advice referring to x windows
I tell you all this
if I wanted a gui I would use windows
the only reason I'm giving this a try is
out of curiosity
I had plenty of opertunities in the past to try unix
1st wirh aix , then xenix , then sco then sun os
but was always a slow typist so that put me off
coz lets face it , to be productive using unix (not X)
you gotta be a good tyist
now that my typing speed (note speed , not acccuracy)
is a tad faster than in 1986
I thought
hell why not
the cd is only $15 AU
and its says self booting on the cover
"up and running in minutes" was the claim
I guess I was just too lazy to learn another set of commands
who wants to go through dweeb stage again?
hell I dont
I though just maybe there is an easier way
and there isnt
so I either get on with it
or stick with MS and never know another style
I like variety
so I'll stick with it
and yes I know how to use a search engine very well
I would have left this NG had no-one replied
but I stuck around , I'm a sucker for posting a reply to a reply
thanks for the guys who put up with my shit and soldiered on
with the cause ,
I appreciate all the advice
but I'm not one to get info from a other users
I have to do it the hard way
like I have done everything else
ciao
and BTW linux dosent suck
I thing its great idea!
a collective effort !
for the people by the people
(do I sound like a communist?)
