Depends if you want to do it for all users - in which case /etc/profile
is the best place; or for only some users - .profile or .bash_profile
in the users home directory. (Note the dot on the front of the last
two files).

I have some hundred files copied from windows, which contain spaces
and braces, which I want to exchange with underquotes. Can emacs do
that? Does anybody know/have a shell or perl script for that purpose?
Any other ides on how to do it effectively?

The unix equivalent of "copy con filename" to create a file from the command
line is "cat >filename". Press control D (not control Z) to end the file.

2)turn the power switch off without fucking the system
3)make bill gates rich

It's not saving, its piping. Go to www.linuxresources.com and check the
docs in LDP. Also reading some of them wouldn't hurt.

Ours is in /etc/profile. We get a fortune at login and when we su to
root or another user (because /etc/profile is read for the new login in
that case).

what does a 200mhz have to do with asm dumbass?
BTW P5 is not THAT different from 386 & 486 for
user apps.

>to create a nul file in linux?

here you go dickhead, a piece of Linux asm code for i86 that
will create a file called some_shit:

        .file "fc.c"
        .version "01.01"
gcc2_compiled.:
.section .rodata
.LC0:
        .string "some_shit"
.text
        .align 4
.globl main
        .type main,@function
main:
        pushl %ebp
        movl %esp,%ebp
        subl $4,%esp
        pushl $64
        pushl $.LC0
        call open
        addl $8,%esp
        movl %eax,%eax
        movl %eax,-4(%ebp)
        movl -4(%ebp),%eax
        pushl %eax
        call close
        addl $4,%esp
.L9:
        leave
        ret
.Lfe1:
        .size main,.Lfe1-main
        .ident "GCC: (GNU) 2.7.2.3"

Now go and read some documentation before mouthing off.
BTW asm and C are far more simpler than administration
(PROPER) of a unix cluster. Learning any language is
easy, only applying it is hard (algorithims and code
optimization).

You've got them on different networks. No need for "goofy" ip numbers: the
blocks of numbers set aside for private networks are intended for exactly
what you are doing. Make one box 10.0.0.1 and the other 10.0.0.2 .
