Debian is easy. I hear that RedHat is a bit more... odd. But I suppose
a moron like you wouldn't understand anything anyway.

Thanks John. Will try that asap. One of the books I was looking
through said there were ip-addess groups reserved for private
networks, but never went on to tell what blocks these were. And I
apparently was dozing off when I went through whatever part explained
which piece of the ip-addr indicates a network that everybody has to
be on. I'm betting this just works... -steve

This is where learning to READ comes in usefull.

Nothing illogical about it.
Makes perfect sense to me.
Want a file listing. Type ls
Want to create a new file. Open an editor [I'd recommend JOE in your case.
You wouldn't be able to handle anything as complex as VI or VIM], type to

Simple, innit?

It *IS* user friendly. It can be moron unfriendly however, as you found out.
Need help on a specific subject?
Type apropos <whatever>
This list all commands that have <whatever> in the man page summary.
Then type man <command>

Subject: samba printing mystery
Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 00:47:47 GMT
Weirdness happening here. I set up samba today to print from my kids windows
machine to my linux box. Everything seems to work fine. The printer is shown
on windows and I installed the drivers. I print a test page and it seems to
work fine and spools to linux but nothing prints. The file just sits there in
/var/spool/samba. How do I get it to go from there to the linux spooler?
Should my smb.conf be pointing to my regular linux spooler? I've tried
everything. My testparm output seems ok. Load smb config files from
/etc/smb.conf Processing section "[homes]" Processing section "[printers]"
Loaded services file OK. I'm at a loss. I've included everything I can to try
to get some help with this.

whats the point of that?
if i learn to do what you suggest
I may as well stick with the linux commands
thanx anyway
but I seem to be given enough help to get me started
all I need was to access my cd rom
and create a txt file
I can manage by myself for now
I have enough to get me going
it was just those 2 things that I couldnt work out
and seeing it was after midnite when I posted
and I dont have http access for now
my isp is sorta out of order (prolly running on linux hehe) , only nntp and
pop3 was working
all I could do was ask you guys
I didnt need to be called a moron though
I think that is so demeaning
esp since the labeler dosent really know me or my situation
and english isnt my 1st language

Subject: perl script and permissions

I have a perl script which starts my internet connection in Linux. It
works for root but gives the following error when executed by a user.
Insecure $ENV{BASH_ENV} while running setuid at /usr/local/bin/ppp-on
line 32.
Here is the code that pertains to the error.
$command="/usr/sbin/pppd name \"".$NAME."\"".
" -d connect \'/usr/sbin/chat -t 45 -v ABORT BUSY \"\" ATDT".
$PHONE." CONNECT \"\"\' ".$MODEM.
" 115200 noipdefault modem defaultroute crtscts";
$ENV{'PATH'} = ''; # Make $ENV{'PATH'} untainted
system($command);
What is wrong with it that would make it not able to execute as a user?
Thanx....

They buy windows machines because Microshite force OEM's to install it
on all machines they sell. How many high-street stores sell anything
but Windoze on their PC platforms? How many would even know that there
IS an alternative?
