So Far, here, as with so many other posts on relative M$ Vs. Linux,
I've seen all sorts of bitching, moaning, and crying
(as well as the well thought out defense of...)
about "idiot friendly"

I MUST BE THAT IDIOT

Since the demise of commercially available Dos - based software,
I have been stuck with adjusting to Windoze.

I don`t have a really snazzy job, I work in a warehouse.
I however am a consumer. I buy things I can use.

Having just bought RedHat 5.2, I thought I was going to shit a horse!

This stuff is user tolerant. That's it.
(unless of course you're one of the tech-elite...cos this discussion keeps
degrading into elitist convo.)

aIts a pain in the backside to mount then unmount a CDROM.
even though it looks like :
        mount dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom/blahblahblah

Most users probably agree that that's a whole bunch of extra effort.
If Linux is so great as described, why's it so painful for the john doe to use?

Windoze is a necessary evil - access for the uninformed, or unwilling

Masochists (like myself) grab Linux out of a box, and find there's a whole
boatload of tweaking we need to do to use it. john doe won't.

The real evil of M$ is their monopolistic practices.
The real good of linux is that its like philosophy - free to all for their use.

Then again, someone out there is gonna flame the hell outta this,
        and Gates' lawyers probably want me dead now too! =)

I have the 4 meg version of the GBE under RH5.2 and x 3.3.3 and am
completely satisfied with the speed... in a lot of ways, it is faster
than under windows... if that is the os or not is beyond me, but NS
screens load much more quickly under Linux with it than they do under
Windows

The UID range is a problem and is on the TODO list for 2.3.

Most large academic sites want a large UID range. If you
have an annual first-year enrolement of 20,000 students
most of whom are doing three or four year courses it doesn't
take too long before you run out of UIDs.

Of course, you probably won't get all the students onto
one Linux box, but a lot of UNIX networking assumes that
there is one person per UID and that the UID of a person
never changes.

So the small UID range is preventing central registration
and authorisation of users on one big RADIUS/NIS/Kerberos
server, leading to the multiple password problem. As each
faculty needs to maintain their own user DB, cross-faculty
NFS mounts become a problem. As UIDs are part of the
permissions of a file, you can't have a central backup
solution attached to a big tape cartridge silo. Etc, etc...

Can someone explain these messages to me:

eth0: Tx FIFO error! Status 02ea.
eth0: Tx FIFO error! Status 02e2.

The vast majority of messages are the 02ea variety. The server machine
prints this while a client is downloading a file via ftp. The client
also shows packet errors. Both machines are running 2.0.36. The server
machine has an AMD PCnet card using the lance v1.14 2/3/98 driver
running on non-standard port 0x240. The client machine has a DC21041
Tulip driver.

These errors only occur while 'getting' a file from the server, and the
transfer rate shows between 60 and 90 Kbytes/sec. When I 'put' a file
to the server I receive no error messages or packet errors, and the
transfer rate is much faster at 5e+02Kbytes/sec.

Can someone help me out here? Thanks.

Funny! I have always demanded that students programs must run on our UNIX
workstations using strict ANSI compliability, and, on occasions, POSIX. The
exercise was always primarily that students should become aware of the ANSI
standard for C. Time and time again, they are tempted into using some
"extension" provided by their vendor, and every time, portability was
compromisd. That was part of the exercise. Once, I got them to program
POSIX pipes; the Microsoft students did not like that much, but again, it's
an important lesson to know that there are industrial standards around, and
vendors like Microsoft deliberately flout them.

I note that the question was concering "Turbo C Assembler". Now, I have not
used a Microsoft platform for many years, but surely, that should be either
"Turbo C" or "Turbo Assembler". Asking anybody to write a program for a
specific vendor imho demonstrates incompetance on behalf of whoever is in
charge of the course, but, as long as you can stick to ANSI C, it should
still compile under Turbo C.

If, on the other hand, you are being requested to write assembley language
programs, then the question makes more sense. Assembley languages cannot be
standardised, as they reflect the underlying computer architecture. In this
case, Turbo Assembler (and I did not know it even existed :-)) is as good as
any other, so why not use Turbo stuff? However, nothing you write in
assembler for Linux will work for Microsoft platforms.

Cheers,
   Mike Dowling

The Arco DupliDisk is a very affordable IDE RAID 1 disk mirroring controller.
You can check it out at: http://www.arcoide.com.

The DupliDisk doesn't require any drivers so it runs with any operating
system.

Try moving the required file out of the area temporarily, do the installation,
then move everything for the new installation to the /usr/local2 directory and
move the required file back in place... I wonder if this has been automated...

"Merits of technology?" Let me get this straight. First Microsoft
offers Internet Explorer with a similar pricing as Netscape. Nobody
wants it. Then they offer it gratis while Netscape still costs
money. Nobody wants it. Then they deliver it with their operating
system unasked. Still many people install Netscape over it. Then
they tie it into their operating system in a way which makes it pretty
hard to remove it.

This is competing on the merits of technology?

Subject: libc5/libc6, WindowMaker, and segfaults
Date: 14 Jan 1999 12:07:39 -0500
Reply-To: David Guertin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi folks,

I've got a program (GUI for Arkeia backup software) that has started
segfaulting for normal users but not for root. This only started
happening after I recently upgraded WindowMaker from 0.20 to 0.50, but
I'm at a loss to understand what the connection is, if any.

The system is a Red Hat 5.1 installation.

Checking ldd while root gives:

#ldd /usr/knox/bin/arkx
        libX11.so.6 => /usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib/libX11.so.6 (0x4000d000)
        libm.so.5 => /usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib/libm.so.5 (0x4009f000)
        libc.so.5 => /usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib/libc.so.5 (0x400a7000)

Checking ldd for Joe user gives:

$ldd /usr/knox/bin/arkx
        libX11.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6 (0x4000d000)
        libm.so.5 => /usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib/libm.so.5 (0x400a4000)
        libc.so.5 => /usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib/libc.so.5 (0x400ac000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x40175000)
        ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x4025a000)

OK, so it looks like there's a problem with using libc.so.6 in
addition to libc.so.5. But wait, on another machine where the same
program (installed as a binary) runs fine for both root and users, ldd
shows:

$ ldd /usr/knox/bin/arkx
        libX11.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6 (0x40003000)
        libm.so.5 => not found
        libc.so.5 => not found
        libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x4009a000)
        /lib/ld-linux.so.1 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x00000000)

So on this machine, libc6 works OK.

Can anyone give me some pointers as to what might be happening here,
or some things to check?

Thanks,

Because, when you run it as a script, the script runs in another
process, and sets the path for *that* process. Then it terminates, and
the affected process goes away. To set environment variables in *your*
process, you either have to set them 'manually', or make the shell
read your script as if it were manually input (take a look at man bash
for the dot command).

Just as a check I asked my 3 year old if she realised that he wasn't
serious and her reply was "what's the f**kwit running Windows for in
the first place?" ;-)
