Bruce-
I have a Matrox MIllenium G200 AGP running, and it rocks.
I had to upgrade to XF86 3.3.3.1 but that was just for the G200. some
AGP cards work in 3.3.1. check at:
www.xfree86.org
look for your card under current version notes or something and it will
say:
"notes for XXXX users"
good luck-

If the win32 command line is OK for you then you can get the cygnus
program windres. This is included in the port of various gnu utilities
to windows. Look for gnuwin32 on the cygnus web site www.cygnus.com
windres -i user32.dll -o user32.rc
gives me

Well, not sure if I'd go that far: since a dialup user could do nasty
things with mail loops. (Though it's unclear whether to count a
.forward on a pair of well-connected servers as 'dialup', so maybe I'm
just being pedantic. Having seen half a T1 consumed by a mail loop,
it's not pretty.)
Certainly in this case, Earthlink is being loony.
I often see weird problems cause by people setting up Linux boxes (the
most recent was a couple days ago) and messing up things like the return
envelope on the mail and forcing their bounces to go to my postmaster
box.
We don't terminate accounts for that. We don't even threaten them for
it. They get personal mail back explaining that they've got a problem
with their setup and offering assistance to correct the problem.
I'd say to not bother with Earthlink or other multinational
conglomerates. Find a good local provider that cares about keeping
your business.

Suffering from an unstable system.
K6-400 (stepping 12), Motherboard FIC PA-2013 (VIA MP3),
256 MB Ram (PC-100), (the board allows to downclock the RAM to 66 Mhz, what I
did),
AGP Matrox G200, 2 SCSI-Controller, EATA-DPT (only Disks)
and ncr53c825 (DDS-3, CDROM ).
RedHat 5.2 Kernel 2.0.36 and I tried as well all 2.2.0-preXX. the last
2.2.0-pre7ac2.
The system keeps chrashing.
I am trying to fix the system now since christmas. Getting frustrated....
Any ideas, suggestions??
Thanks in advance

There was an earlier effort called Audiotechnique to write the Gimp
of sound editing. It had lots of design work a rather busy mailing list
but seemingly nobody actually writing any code. If you're interested in
being involved in a project like this, the best bet would be to make a
start by writing some code, maybe by getting a gui working.
On a related issue, I'm currently working on a library for reading
and writing sound files. It's in development at the moment and will
soon be reading and writing standard PCM WAV files. I then hope to add
reading and writing of uncompressed AIFF file and .au files.
The library is written to compile and work correctly on both little
and big endian systems and to be easily extensible to add new file
formats.
I'm hoping to do my first release in 2-3 weeks, so look out for it
on freshmeat. The license will be LGPL.

I have Samba running (thanks to all who helped) so now I am on to the
next step - getting at my samba server via the internet from a win95
client.
I have ssh for win32 and sshd for linux. Now what? I can get into my
linux server and start pppd and get the standard PPP garbage. How do I
get win95 to recognize that that's a PPP connection? I'm sure that
there's a redir command involved, but I'm in totaly new territory for
me. I've looked at all the FAQs and HOWTOs and none address connecting
win95 client to a Linux server. All address linux-linux or linux client
to NT server.
>From the man pages, sshd has a proxy server and a redirector built in,
but no examples of how to use them, and no guide at all for setting up a
ppp connection using them.
Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

The only way I can think of on an Intel system, would be to use the
"suspend" mode, where a computer powers down, saving the state of
everything first. You could then re-open another system that had been
closed. As I recall, there was something of this in OS/2 Warp 4, but
I have not investigated it.

I've installed Linux about 4 times so far. I blew away everything
that was on the machine before. So will a "dos disk" work without
dos? Actually, the manual that comes with the disks say that the
disks won't work with DOS, only with NT or Windows98, but those are
gone now.
Anyway, this tip about PnP was very useful. On some "howto" page for
Linux I found an explanation about how PnP Bios turns off some card
slots at boot time so the autoprobe cannot find an ethernet card that
is plugged into a "turned off" slot.
I'm going to try moving the ethernet card to different slots and
reinstalling Linux with the card in different slots (the installation
hangs and leaves me with a broken computer so I have to reinstall
Linux, the installation never completes).
But if that doesn't work, how does one turn off the PnP?
(Remember I no longer have NT or any Window9X on the machine.)
Any hardware web pages that might help?
Thanks,
Rob

Damn it, folks, it's getting ridiculuos. *Writing* grep from scratch takes
less than week. All you need is read(), write(), open() and close(). Oh,
malloc()/free() are useful too. Grep is a trivial program, no black magic there.
You are posting from ac.uk, so you *should* have an access to library.
Grab there Aho, Hopcraft and Ullman and read on regular expressions. Then
take C complier and write the damned thing. It may be not too well-optimized,
but you should be able to implement O(length of expression * length of input)
variant. At least the filter variant (reading from stdin) should be doable
within a week. Don't use anything that would interact with underlying OS except
read() and write(). Even Windows should provide *that* much.
Sheesh... Kids those days. Pox on M$ and Crapple for making folks
believe that computers are full of black magic.

Just add .htm as a mime type ... Make a copy of the .html entry minus
the "l".
It is showing the source to you because it thinks it is a txt file.

I don't know how to solve the problem, but I KNOW this is wrong. An
atapi drive is atapi NOT SCSI. The PPA driver is for WINDOWS/DOS.
Under Linux you just use the standard atapi floppy support and that is
all there is to it. You DON'T need SCSI support at all.

Try getting the source instead of the RPM (the source's newer).
Then go to the directory where you put the source and type:
tar xvzf licq-0.50-alpha-3.tar.gz
cd licq-0.50-alpha-3
./configure
make
make install

Subject: Relocate '/' after replacing HDD
Date: 15 Jan 1999 18:59:05 GMT
I am planning to replace the small HDD where my / partition and swap
partition are located (along with a Win95 FAT-16 partition for Win swap
and misc stuff) with a bigger HDD. Here is how I plan to do it.
Does anyone see any (hidden) danger here?
1. Tar the / filesystem to my /opt partition on a 2nd HDD. "Mount"
shows 49041 blocks used for / and 79838 blocks available on /opt. I
will exclude /proc from the tar file. I do not have access to a tape
unit.
2. Remove old HDD, install new HDD, set up Linux ext2 partition and
Linux swap partition with Linux fdisk.
3. Using boot/rescue disks, untar to the new / partition. Modify
fstab to reflect the new partition /dev names where necessary. Add a
/proc directory under / with mkdir.
4. Boot Linux with loadlin as usual.
Where can I go wrong?
TIA,
Howard Arons

Hi,
The short answer here is:
Yes, Linux is free, as in "no money to pay for Linux, but for the
distribution"...
Try www.altavista.com, search for Linux.

Right. The product that was fueled by Rockefeller's oil and that made
Rockefeller rich was not the motor-car, but the kerosene lamp.
