Hello to all,

Is there a Linux program that is able to view Windows .HLP files?
It doesn't have to be something very elaborated, if it just displays
the contents, and allow using the Index and the Contents, that'd help
a lot.

Thanks in advance,

Actually, the latter is patently false; C++ is *not* a superset of C, it's
a different language. A good C++ programmer may well be a *sucky* C
programmer. (And, of course, vice versa.)

There are plenty of people who can generate things that some compilers will
eventually accept as C, but which are fundementally awful code. We do not
want these people maintaining "C".

>How much of a problem are these? Are there any other problems?

C++ is a bloated, inefficient, badly designed hog. If you want to use a
more "powerful" language than C, look at perl, python, or even Objective C.

Hmm... *goes to website*

Okay, this is annoying. A Usenet gateway of some sort. People post
questions to a web page expecting support. And it shuffles it off to
the newsgroups, and grabs the replies?

Are there any Usenet-wide policies that prohibit this?

I hate to bust your bubble, but your idiotic post is way off base.
There were about 20 people at last night's meeting, which focused on
networking linux boxes. Several members brought their own machines in
and the usual "hands on" style of meeting got the machines in working
order. One gentlemen had trouble with a modem and that was put in
working order as well. Everything is demonstrated as it's done, so
everyone gets a great learning experience. Generally a different topic
each month, selected by the members present. Everyone is generally
welcome to bring in any box that they are having trouble with. The
expertise levels range from newbie to wizard. Obviously you haven't
been to a meeting or wouldn't have made such a hostile statement. Why
don't you come and see for yourself? Most people there are Windows
users.

I have yet been able to get Quicken to run with WINE so I
gave up. I downloaded MONEYDANCE and the appropriate
JAVA. The install was a little more that just unzip and untar.
Piece of cake. I've been using it for about two months w/o
any problems. I just recently "purchased" a personal license
for MONEYDANCE. I feel it is money well spent to support
a good product. BTW I used Quicken to "export" my data
and accounts in a qif format. I then used MONEYDANCE
to "import" the data. No problems at all.

The former if you just want to run binaries, both if you want
to compile sources (for which you need the compiler also).

What do you mean? I have downloaded their WordPerfect 8 for linux some months ago
from linux.corel.com or something like that. It works quite well and runs
properly as a X application (i.e. not as resource hungry as StarOffice, which is
more fully featured), but you only get to have the word processor, not anything
like spread sheet or presentations. Didn't try for long as I am mainly a latex
person. I think you mean a full Office (e.g. "CorelOffice" or something like
that) suite?

On the contrary, it DOES work with 2.2.* kernels. It has been
working, ever since 2.1.119. From /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes:

RealPlayer
==========

Current releases of Real Player 5.0 depend on a bug in the sound
sub-system which is no longer there. Consequently, they don't work.
Real is aware of the problem and should have an updated version of the
software available shortly. In the mean time, you can always try
backing up your copy of rvplayer, and then editing it by:

   dd if=/dev/zero of=rvplayer bs=1 count=1 seek=657586 conv=notrunc

   dd if=/dev/zero of=rvplayer bs=1 count=1 seek=665986 conv=notrunc

If you're lucky, you'll then have sound....

You may also need to edit it with

   dd if=/dev/zero of=rvplayer bs=1 count=1 seek=702554 conv=notrunc

as well. Alternately, download rpopen from
http://onramp.i2k.com/~jeffd/rpopen/ and pre-load it before you run
rvplayer (it's a shared object which blocks rvplayer from doing the
NONBLOCKing open of /dev/dsp).

Tried it from 2.1.120 on, and it's worked ever since. I'm
working on getting G2 up now.

IMHO, one of the things that Linux sorely needs is something
like AppleWorks.

A nice, simple, light-weight wordprocessor, database,
spreadsheet, drawing package. Something that will run
comfortably on a P90 with 24M and fly on a P166 with 32M.

Or something like WriteNow for a simple word processor.

We've got plenty of industrial-strength, resource-hungry,
professional office products (ApplixWare, StarOffice, Corel
WP). We need something that will run on a discarded windows
machine that your grandmother can use to design, print, and
address newsletters for family reunions.

My apologies if this is not the correct newsgroup...

I recently set up some scsi drives to do mirroring with the raid
package as an oracle Server. But then I read that I can't mirror swap
partitions. So this has me thinking.. If one of my drives goes, my
machine is likely to crash due to inability to swap back in processes,
and I may lose a portion of my data due to crashing.

I understand that since I am mirrored I can probably just reboot and I
won't swap on the failed drive and I will probably come up ok.. But
am I missing something?

Is there some way to prevent the machine from crashing due to failed
swap? Can I lock the most important processes in ram so I am
guaranteed not to swap them?

Or should I just get enough ram that I don't need any swap space at
all?

thanks,

paul

I am also having both problems. On the one hand I am reading @#$%ed-up
webpages and on the other I am spending ages changing the output of
various tools to the correct HTML tags.

So now I have ditched Windows altogether and install Linux today. I

So can you recomend a better tool for creating these pages rather than

We are running Red Hat Linux version 5.0 (I think) here and we are
trying to install a CD-Writer. (The kernel version is 2.0.35).
We have physically installed the Yamaha CRW4416S drive internally
connected to an existing Adaptec SCSI controller. The drive is
detected by the PC BIOS and appears to be detected by Linux (see
partial output from dmesg below). I have read through the Howto
documents for CDROM and CD-Writing and am confused as to what needs to
be done to associate the new CD-RW drive with a device in /dev.
I plan to install the cdrecord 1.6 RPM but before doing so I would
like to make sure that the CD-RW is visible to the system.
The other SCSI device in use is the hard disk drive, and there is
already a regular IDE CDROM drive installed and working.

Subject: Best Linux Distro? / Best GUI?
Date: Thu, 02 Sep 1999 18:26:53 +0000

Here's a little flamebait for you all. What is the best distro and GUI
combo? By "best" let me explain. I'm a very experienced Linux
user/admin. I started back around 92 with slackware and am currently
using Redhat 5.0. I've heard many terrible things about RH6.0 and am
wary. What I want is a distro that installs smoothly, has a good GUI
(OK, this is also a question about Gnome/KDE) and has a binary package
installation system that checks dependencies, etc... I liked slackware
but after a while I gave it up b/c they use tarballs and make you
compile everything. As I understand it they still do. Opinions? -
please CC to my email as my newsserver is slow and flaky. Thanks.

Conversely, are there any tools that allow you to create
winhelp files under *nix? I believe that winhelp is switching
to HTML, so the question may become moot.

Did you install the corresponding "development" (or "dev", or "devel")
packages?

Sure... Start your first one as you normally do. For the second one,
use "startx -- :1".

I've got a tulip clone ($15)that works fine in RH6.0. It's a CNET card,
PRO-120B. I tried the tulip driver that came with red hat. No luck.
CNET has an older version of the linux driver at their website that did
the trick. You might give it a try. They're at www.cnet.com.tw. Follow
the links.

Dear Sirs,

I am a starter of Linex. Could any one of you could teach me which version
of Linex should I try to start?

RH6? or susie? I heard that RH is better. And the menu book of Susie is
better, but it is not user friendly. Moreover, how about chinese Linex?
Because I want to use it in office and some documents are in Chinese?

Please help :-)

These ttyp terminal (telnet) logins aren't mapped in the inittab
and the messages file didn't help either just says you've logged in on the
mentioned ttyp lines. Yes I am logging in via telnet remotely not on the
console
of the machine.
