I'm just curious as to what sort of bigass kernels folks are building that
require bzImage. I compile a number of things not used constantly as
modules, including: cdrom support, floppy support, NFS support, printer
support, PPP, filesystem types that are only mounted occasionally, code
pages and char sets other than English, and sound. I've never needed to
use bzImage. I don't think I've ever had a zImage kernel larger than 350K

Hello,
I recently installed linux Redhat 5.2 on my system. the installation
seemed to go fine, but when i try to boot from the floppy i get the
following error
boot:
loading linux
error 0x10
this keeps repeating. the system has windows 98 on it. it contains 2
hard drives. one is a 700 meg that has windows on it and a 4 gig that
is half FAT32 and the other half has the linux partions on it. As i
said, i'm a newbie with linux, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! e-mail replies are welcome too.

Using Linux there are almost hardware failures of some sort which lead
to corrupted filesystems. For me it was an overclocked CPU which gave
me some undeleted inodes and worst: some kernel panic's.

I have a Sound Blaster 32 plug-and-play.
Some time ago, i managed to make it work (fiddling with isapnptools)
with .wav files and CD, but never with MIDI files.
Now I have installed OSS and everything works fine.
I wander if it is possible to make everything work without using OSS.
Last thing: I still don't understand how to load/unload in memory
soundbanks
either with or without OSS.
Thanks in advance

Subject: Network Video Broadcast (not conference) Available?
Date: Sun, 17 Jan 1999 21:09:22 +0000
I'm hoping someone out there can comment on my issue...
My goal is to take an analog signal and broadcast it to a client. I
bought a Hauppage WinTv card (using bttv driver and xawtv) to begin
testing and it works fine. I can display the xawtv window
elsewhere(using X11), but the frame rate slows to a lurch (this is due
to the fact that the Hauppage card overlays images direct to the local
frame buffer/video card's memory).
I'd like to get full frame rate (or at least close) meaning ~30fps on a
100TX, 100FX or even ATM network. Bandwidth should not be an issue.
I've checked out vic and other mbone tools for Linux, but they seem to
all take advantage of the Quickcam for Video Conferencing. The nv tool
looks like a winner (can operate in recvOnly mode for the client), but
again everything is based around the QuickCam.
THE QUESTION:
Does anybody know how to get nv (or other such tools) to pick up an
analog signal through a TV card and broadcast it to clients? If there is
another card I should try, then please let me know...
Thanks,
Pat

Nedit does a good job with context definition and is quite
configurable...but it doesn't handle vi commands. Can do split screen,

Usually your software will have some way to cut and paste. But a quick
way to copy is to move your cursor normally to where you want to paste,
then with the mouse, highlight what you want to copy from that or any
other window, then move the X cursor back to the window you want to paste
to and hit the 3rd mouse button (or both buttons if you emulate 3-button).
Whatever was highlighted will magically appear at the program cursor in
the window where the X cursor is. So you can easily copy from a Netscape
web page to a text editor or whatever, even in different sections of the
virtual screen.

Subject: traceroute is using the wrong interface
Date: Sun, 17 Jan 1999 19:51:04 GMT
I am running Redhat 5.2 as a SMB and DHCP server for some Win95 clients. I am
now trying to connect to the internet using PPP.
I have three network interfaces when ppp is connected: lo, eth0, ppp0.
I have tested both ping and http to both ip addresses and domain names, and
both appear to use the correct interface(ppp0).
But now when I attempt a traceroute, it says it has found multiple interfaces
and is going to use eth0 (which is the wrong one).
How can I get it to choose the correct interface???
Some useful information may be that in order to get win95 to work I had to do
the following command:
route add -host 255.255.255.255 dev eth0
Can you please help!

right. you see, on machine machines, there's an entry in /etc/fstab
allowing any user to mount the local cdrom or floppy drive. by default, the
user option also implies nosuid, which means that the setuid bit on any
exe's on that mount will be ignored.
the problem here is with the way that perl handles setuid perl scripts.
linux, like some other unices, simply ignores the setuid bit on scripts
outright, due to a race condition in the way they're handled. so, when
perl is invoked on a script, among other things, it checks for the setuid
bit. if the bit is present, then the regular perl interpreter re-invokes
the script under a sepreate setuid perl interpredir (typically named
suidperl). the script then runs as a regular setuid program.
so, user A mounts a floppy in his own machine, and writes a malicious
setuid perl script on it. he then goes and mounts it as an unprivileged
user on the target machine, and runs the malicious program. the kernel
sees it's mounted nosuid, and so ignores it. however, then perl comes
along, sees the setuid bit, and, not knowing that it should be ignored,
happily invokes suidperl. since suidperl is on a partition not mounted
nosuid, it gets root privs, hence the script runs with root privs - boom,
malicious script has a field day.

Subject: question -- x server hangs
Date: 17 Jan 1999 19:08:17 -0000
Hello
I have a problem with my X server occasionally hanging. When I run
'startx', it usually works, but sometimes it just hangs. The screen
tries to change mode, (it goes black and there is a clicking noise
which is normal), but instead of changing to a hash-grey background
before painting my root window, it just stays blank (black). A friend
of mine that I installed Linux for also has the same problem.
I use RedHat 5.1, and it has XFree86 3.3.2. Is this a known problem
or is there something wrong with the way I installed it? Most of the
time it works, but sometimes it hangs and the only way to continue is
to reboot the machine, which is very bad for the file system (not shutting
down normally).
Thanks,
Ambrose

Any ideas what's broken, or maybe a better font selection program?

Subject: compiling problems...
Date: Mon, 18 Jan 1999 01:54:01 +0000
I run Redhat 5.2 with kernel 2.0.36-1 plus all the current/latest
updates. I have the latest tk and tcl libs installed as well.
I have been trying to properly compile a 3d renderer/animation
package called mam/vrs. When I run ./configure on it, all
goes well except that I keep getting a message that tkInt.h
wasn't found (but that the app may run OK anyway) at the
end of the configure process.
I didn't see any special requirements indicating tkInt.h would
be needed _specifically_ in any of the readme/other files. At the
first attempt I had tk-8.0.3-20 installed. After the first
problem in running configure, I installed the tk-devel-8.0
package. After this, ./configure still indicated that tkInt.h
could not be found.
I ran "locate tkInt.h" and found nothing. I ran "whereis tkInt.h"
with no success. I then ran updatedb and ldconfig and then tried
again. tkInt.h could not be found. I then installed the source
rpm for tk-8.0 on my system. It installs into /usr/src/tk8.0/
and in a ../tk8.0/generic/ subdirectory is tkInt.h. Great.
I then ran locate again but it did not find tkInt.h. I ran
whereis again. Didn't find it. I ran updatedb and ldconfig
again. locate and whereis still wouldn't find it. I logged out
and logged back on and then ran locate again. Didn't find tkInt.h.
I rebooted and then ran locate again. NOW it found tkInt.h in
the proper ../tk8.0/generic/ location.
I tried running ./configure on mam/vrs again. It yet again
indicated that tkInt.h was not found, yadda, yadda, yadda.
What is the deal here? Am I going to have to go thru every
little file in the app to try to find where a reference to
tkInt.h is so I can make an alteration so the freaking configure
process will find tkInt.h? I already know it is not in any of the
Makefile variants that come with it. Is there an easier way?
Should I add the path to tkInt.h to bash.profile? To ld.so.conf
and then run ldconfig again?
