Greetings. My great leap forward this weekend was getting knews newsreader up
and running. I'm clever enough to get it to use gvim as a message editor.
The only thing I'm missing now is a spell checker. I know there has to be
some way to cleverly run ispell out of gvim. But it is probably going to take
me weeks to figure it out on my own and I thought some kind soul might have
already worked this all out for me.
Thanks

You never had *flags*?
That's news to me.

this is gibberish. IDE (the ATA family, actually) is a standard, which Linux
takes good advantage of.

certainly, and Linux does an excellent job of them. for instance, you'll
see very good performace and stability from any Intel chipset, and
the VIA MVP3. there have been some bad clone chipsets, and Linux
attempts to work around their problems.
> to keep cluster sizes down....The FS you use IS THE MAJOR factor

this is pretty nonsensical, too. certainly, an inefficient FS
like FAT will cripple performance. but an efficient FS like EXT2
lets you see nearly the full performance of the drive. as in
EXT2 filesystems with UDMA sustaining 14 MB/s...

Well, I've been trying to port some oceanography SW over to a Linux box,
and I'm having trouble. The supplier's best guess is that it's caused
by incompatibilities between the "bison/flex" combo used on Linux, and
the "yacc/lex" combo they designed it to use while installing. In
particularly, it looks as though it's the flex/lex that's causing the
problem, although it's hard to say.
I'm a relative newbie at Linux, so I have to ask- does anyone have any
experience with this problem? Is there anything I can do to get flex to
interpret files the same way that lex does?

Neil Zanella wrote in message ...

Yes if it is a SCSI drive. Set it up as the first HD and the BIOS should
boot right from there. I know for sure that this works for JAZ drives and I
don't see any reason why it should not work for ZIPs.
>My BIOS has nothing that says I can boot from the parallel port...
This is your problem. With a printer port drive you are simply lost. There
is a reason why it's called a printer port.
>Is it possible to install LILO on the MBR and select boot from Zip Drive
>as am option or something like that?
The problem is, that the kernel must be loaded by the BIOS. And the BIOS
doesn't know anything about loading something from the printer port.
Workaround: Create a tiny boot partition on the HD (5MB are more then
enough) and store the kernel (plus modules) there. Once the kernel has been
loaded and is alive, you can run anything even from the most wierd drives,
including parallel port drives.

>How does access to the Zip Drive compare to access to the floppy drive?
It's my understanding that ZIP drives are slower than HDs, but faster than
floppies.
And parallel port emulations are slower than the regular IDE or SCSI
counterparts.

This comes straight out of "Running Linux" from Matt Welsh and Lar Kaufman.
It's a 'got to have': (What I don't understand is why your 2nd drive isn't
dev hdb)
edit: /etc/lilo.conf (or /boot/lilo.conf or etc/lilo/config)
boot = /dev/hda
compact
install = /boot/boot.b
map = /boot/map
# This is to boot linux from /dev/hda.
image = /boot/vmlinuz # Location of the kernel
label = Linux # Name for the LILO boot menu
root = /dev/hda1 # Location of root partition
vga = normal
# This is to boot Win95 from /dev/hdc.
other = /dev/hdc1 # Location of partition
table = /dev/hdc # Lacation of partition table
label = Win95 # Name for LILO boot menu
loader = /boot/any_d.b # To boot from second drive
then run: /sbin/lilo -v
now you're ready to reboot. (I figure you know about holding Shift or Ctrl
during boot and using tab to get the bootoptions).
Hope this helped :^)

Or create a new /etc/fstab entry. You can mount/unmount as user 'eric':
/dev/fd0 /A vfat defaults,rw,noauto,user,suid 0 0
> The filename will be truncated in the usual winshit fashion.
Stuck with this either way. There's a way to do filename mapping ala 0.9.3
-> 0_9.3 but I've seem to have forgotten.
Thank god.

Alerady been done. Red Hat Linux has a feature called kickstart wherein
you create a `standard' configuration to a kickstart file on a disk. You
use this file for the installation and the system get's built exactly to
your standard specification
See the KickStart-HOWTO with RH systems for more details.

1. Which RH distribution?
2. output from 'dmesg'
3. output from your 'make' attempt
4. output from 'cat /proc/ioports'
5. output from 'cat /proc/pci'
Try the command 'script bad-bad-ethernet.log', run these commands, then
'^D'

Subject: Help! Re-Compiled Kernel won't boot
Date: Sun, 24 Jan 1999 17:41:02 -0500
Greets,
I recently attempted to recompile my kernel. I did a make zImage, then
renamed it and copied to where the old kernel was and now I can't boot.
The bottom line is, I don't have a boot floppy and need to get at my
linux partition to remove the bad kernel and rename the backup to the
original name etc. Is there anyway to get at my Linux partition?
Also, if I'm not using Lilo ( I use System Commander) how exactly do I
put a new zImage into effect? Make it the new kernel. Everything I
have read deals with using 'make lilo' etc. and I don't want to do
this. Any help is greatly appreciated. Please reply direct as I don't
get to these NG's much these days.
Brian

Where are you having it install LILO, which partition? If it doesn't work
when you install it to hda1, try putting in on the root partition... But
wait, your root partion is hda5... how big is your drive? There are some
limitations as to disk size for LILO.

Subject: machine crash
Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1999 21:04:46 GMT
Hi,
I've never posted to this list before, so excuse any poor etiquite. Here's
the problem. Periodically my linux 2.0.36 machine crashes with this in
/var/adm/messages:
Jan 27 15:39:04 twistdrill kernel: current->tss.cr3 = 00b1e000, ^Lr3 =
00b1e000 Jan 27 15:39:04 twistdrill kernel: *pde = 00000000 Jan 27 15:39:04
twistdrill kernel: Oops: 0002 Jan 27 15:39:04 twistdrill kernel: CPU: 0 Jan
27 15:39:04 twistdrill kernel: EIP: 0010:[<00b2f826>]
When the machine crashes, I see some kind of loop going on the console.
I have no idea what is going on here, I have no idea where to start looking
for the problem. I will greatly appreciate any suggestions, hints, pointers
to documentation, whatever.
Thank you very much,
Brad Beck
