After 'make modules' try 'make modules_install', that should install the
modules.

According to my manual, "kerneld" is obsolete since kernel 2.2 and has been
replaced with the kernel module loader "kmod", which calls "modprobe" when
needed. That's probably the reason why it was commented out.

I had a setup that 'crashed' at night, when the HD powered down and
'stuck' at the lower temperature. The next day, the first attempted
HD access gave a problem. HD needed to be replaced.

I installed mandrake 8 and it installed xawtv with it, but I'm having a
problem changing channels. The first time I loaded it, it started looking
for channels. But when I change a channel, only the number changes. Does
anyone know what's going on here ? Also, I'm not getting any sound. Any help

Hi,

I'd like to hide some FAT32 partitions in the extended partiton whith
GRUB, so my Win2k install can't see Windows 98.
I have to IDE HDs installed and when I type

hide (hd1,

in the GRUB console and press TAB, it lists me the partitions 0-2 which
are for Linux, then the partitions 4-6 which are two NTFS and one FAT32
partition.

When I now try to execute

hide (hd1,5) [the FAT32 partition]

I get an error, saying the partition wasn't found.

But I think the naming of the partiton is correct, why won't it work
then?
(With hide (hd1,3) I can hide the complete extended partition, that
works fine, but I just wan't to hide one partition in the extended.)

Some OS's require more RAM for the install than they do when they actually
run. Maybe you can borrow some memory just to do the install.

cd into the RealPlayer8 directory (/usr/local/RealPlayer8). Then execute
the mimeinstall.sh and pluginstall.sh scripts both as root and as user.
Kill then restart netscape and your file associations will be fixed.

Yep, you are looking for NTP. Just run ntpdate $(ntp_server) as root.
I use bitsy.mit.edu as a server, and it works every time. Of course,
you need to get the ntp tools for your distro before you can run the
command. For slackware, the package is xntp.tgz, though it shouldn't
be too tough to find the one for you.

Slackware doesn't start up like RedHat, SuSE, Mandrake, et al. In
/etc/rc.d/rc.local insert the following

modprobe es1371

and any other modules which Slack is not installing. There are a bunch of
other modules which Slack does install and which you don't need. To stop
some things from starting on boot take the executable bit away from the
files. chmod -x XXXXX.rc. And there are others which you can find with
grep.

When you build your kernel, use the following

# make clean
# make dep
# make bzImage
# make modules
# make modules_install
# cp System.map /boot/System.map
# cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz

Now edit /etc/lilo.conf and in the part for image=/vmlinuz, change
label=linux to label=old. Then add the following

image=/boot/vmlinuz
root=/dev/hdX where X refers to the partition where / is
label=linux
read-only

Now execute /sbin/lilo and when you reboot, your new kernel will come up.

Make sure that the large chip on your soundcard says ens1371 or ens1373 on
it. Creative has been playing games with what they call a Soundblaster 16

roadrunner uses dhcp. you need to modify the ethernet adapter for dhcp and
this should fix the problem. sometimes there is also a modem error with the
motorola modems that were originally supplied by the cable companies. the
newer toshiba modems work better. still, be sure you're running dhcp on the
ethernet adapter.

also, you must not connect the modem via a hub. it must be connected
DIRECTLY to your nic.

furthermore, why buy more ethernet addresses? put a second nic in your
machine and use ip masquerade. set up a hub on the second nic and make the
ip address on the second nic the default gateway for the lan. make the rr
nic the default gateway for your linux box. you can run a zillion computers
on the lan side through the linux box. note that this violates the
acceptable use policy.

i implement this (with the knowlege of rr) to use the ipchains firewall. my
company provides 7/24 customer service and i have an isdn link to my NOC. i
use the linux box as a firewall for the home lan while enjoying high-speed
access for the windows workstation when i'm surfing.

First make sure that the floppy is DOS/Win formatted (format a: /u) with
NO bad sectors. The floppy boot image is written sequentially (no file
system), so it will not work if there are any bad sectors.

You aren't trying to 'copy' the image to the floopy are you? You have to
boot to DOS using the 98 start up disk and then use rawrite to write the
image to the floppy. Once you have a Linux system installed it will be
easier to cp an image to /dev/fd0 using Linux.

Otherwise if you booted with the 98 startup disk, there may be a dosutil
dir with an autoboot.bat in it, but I am not sure if that works anymore
unless they fixed it (it did NOT work in Mandrake 7.0). Mandrake 7.0 was
also a bit strange in that booting the CD itself did not work. You either
had to deactivate booting the CD it CMOS setup, or had to quickly insert
the CD at the boot: prompt during floppy image boot, because the CD had to
already be in the drive when the kernel was loaded.
