Then you've adopted the US meaning, because it certainly was originally a

I want to allow telnet access to a Internet connected server;
but *only* form the local LAN connected machines.
Is this possible or not. I do not wish telnet access available
via the Net at all.
I have disabled most unnecessary services via the inetd.conf including
the telnet deamon. I would re-enable it if I could limit it's authority
via hosts.allow or hosts.deny - but how? Nothing I've tried does the trick.

Have you mixed libc5 and libc6 (== glibc) programs? The formats
of the utmp and wtmp files have changed (see FAQ #3.2 in the
glibc-2.0 source distribution).

Well, that's basically it. Sometimes when I run
Netscape, and select Collabra, my news server isn't
there. Adding it is no difficulty, and the groups

Nyeh? I thought that lpr was the "universal" lpd interface? Are you
thinking of a magicfilter, which automatically detects the type input to lpd
and formats it accordingly? If so, I'm planning on putting one of those in,
but I need a working ghostscript first.

The resolution is probably the problem, then. It's currently set to 180 - I
didn't think it would cause huge problems, just make it come out larger or

I don't think I've tried tiger.ps, but I have tried printing a PS file which
worked with the epson driver and a different printer.

If it's on your floppy controller, it uses the ADD/IRQ (address and IRQ,
right?) of your floppy controller. The IRQ is definitely six (6), but I
forget the address. Try 'cat /proc/ioports' and look for FDD or floppy
or whatever. (I have disabled my FDD controller, so I can't help there.)

Cabling sounds correct.

Subject: Newbie-Printing more than postscript files
Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 23:18:46 -0800

I am running RED HAT 5.2 and I have a HP722C printer. I installed the
pbm2ppa file onto my system. I am able to print postscript files using
lpr.

Example: "lpr testpage.ps" or from the printool of RED HAT in X windows.

I also want to be able to print other files like: ascii, .txt, .bmp,
.jpg, etc...
I am using the RED HAT filter in the printcap file.
/etc/printcap reads:

lp:\
    :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
    :mx#0:\
    :sh:\
    :lp=/dev/lp1:\
    :if=/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter:

I thought that the RED HAT filter was a magic filter allowing for
printing multiple file types. I've tried "lpr testpage.txt" or "lpr
testpage.ascii", but I don't get any results.

Can you please help me.
Thanks in advance.

Try running the /usr/X11R6/bin/vncserver script which comes with VNC. This
will start up the window manager, etc...

Another option is to set your X-Windows display correctly (Probably :1 for
vnc) and run the window manager / apps manually.

I suspect that may be what he's looking at, if he's got a mouse cursor.
It's twm and there's not much TO look at unless you start an app.

SJM, take a look in your login directory for a hidden (it has a dot as its
first character) directory called ".vnc" --it should contain a file called
xstartup that will show you what it's running by default; mine starts twm
as window manager and an xterm. You can customize that. If it's not
starting at least an xterm by default, you should be able to start one up by
using the same trick you would under regular X.

>Another option is to set your X-Windows display correctly (Probably :1 for

E.G. telnet into the Linux box, enter the command "export DISPLAY='ntbox:1'"
and then run a detached xterm with "xterm &" The xterm window opens
inside the VNC screen, you can log off the telnet session without
killing the xterm (because the xterm is running detached) and start up
whatever else you need to run (such as kmahjongg :-) from the xterm.

Just want to point out that 'chmod 755 ppp-on' will give anyone who
connects to the machine with ftp or telnet -read rights- to the telephone
number, account and password to your ISP. Consider making that 'chmod

Could be that the directory you keep those files in is accessible only by

How do you allow pppd to be run by a non-root user? The pppd man page

One good option that hasn't been mentioned yet is the set of manuals on

They're rather basic, but an excellent place to start.

For how many articles? And how long is forever? It does need this

But you should be able to do 'rpm -qpi rpmfile' for general informations,
'rpm -qpl rpmfile' for a list of files, 'rpm -qpR rpmfile' for
prerequisites, and 'rpm2cpio rpmfile |( cd /tmp && cpio -idmvu )' to
actually extract the files into the /tmp directory.
