Hi,
I've downloaded the redhat package for pgp and put the .rpm file in
/root. Then I set the package-directory in the package manager to
/root, but I get the error messy that no .rpm package was found in
directory /root. Any suggestions?

Configure your .Xdefaults. It sounds like your X server (whatever
desktop you use) is not configured. The fact that you get the screen
with a moving cursor tells you VNC is doing its job.
RTFM on setting up VNC. There is a .vnc dir on the linux box that you
need to set up, as well as .Xdefaults.

I'm probably just missing a library somewhere, but I can't seem to
figure out which one.
I'm attempting to compile sources for an older mud that I prefer over LP
or one of the others - the compile generally goes OK until link time,
and then I am told that crypt() is an unreferenced symbol.
gcc version is the one that comes on the SAMS "Unleashed" Redhat 5.2
CD. The crypt() function is defined in the headers, but I wonder if
there's a separate RPM that needs to be installed for the crypt
development libraries.
It's not a critical thing, but I'd like to get it running just so I
could say I did. :-)

Start the program and select "Register" from the help menu. Follow the
instructions.
Registration is free for personal use. It'll connect to the
StarDivision website and generate a customer ID and a personal key, both
of which you'll need to register the program. When running from within
SO50, it'll automatically register and you won't have to enter the
information.

This makes fits what I have seen. When I pointed K15httpd to the dbora
script I 'borrowed' the lock file created by the httpd startup script,
and that is why the dbora script worked that time.

Please consider using a Usenet search service like DejaNews

has been answered already.
Quoting the glibc FAQ:
:2.5. When linking with the new libc I get unresolved symbols
: `crypt' and `setkey'. Why aren't these functions in the
: libc anymore?
:
:{UD} The US places restrictions on exporting cryptographic programs and

:cryptographic functions together with glibc.
:
:The functions are available, as an add-on (see question 1.7). People in

gcc 2.8.1's C preprocessor no longer predefines the 'i386' symbol which
xmkmf/imake use in the definition of LinuxMachineDefines, causing the
problem you're seeing.
In any case, I wouldn't recommend gcc 2.8.1.
On the C side, you're better of sticking with gcc 2.7.2.3, as there are
problems with gcc 2.8.1 compiled Linux 2.0 kernels. And for all languages
(in particular C++) EGCS is more recent, and decently maintained.

Have you read the Bootdisk-howto (I assume not, since it is pretty
comprehensive and you shouldn't have any problems following the
directions) and the .txt files in /usr/src/linux/Documentation (I
think that is the path, I'm not sure though) ?
There are some nasties in creating a ramdisk floppy. Have you set the
correct block address in the kernel so that it will know where the
ramdisk image is stored on the disk? Look at the Bootdisk-howto for
details. MSB
P.S.: I just want to add that tomsrtbt is really good. Someone else
already mentioned it in this thread.

Subject: VNC xstartup (grey screen) - $DISPLAY problems?
Date: Fri, 12 Mar 1999 14:23:31 GMT
Here's what I'm trying to achieve: vncserver on a Linux box, vncclient on
a
windows box. What I get is merley a "grey screen and cross cursor"
seen from
the clinet end - i.e: no applications running. This is dispite
the fact that
my xstartup file contains the line:
afterstep &
Now, here are some
observations. The line (I assume) is identical to:
afterstep -d $DISPLAY &
which (I assume) is identical (for me) to (e.g. in one particualr instance):
afterstep -d PC007248Linux:2
None of the above seem to work.
I have put
a line in the xstartup file, to the effect:
echo $DISPLAY > ~/diag.log
and it confirms that $DISPLAY is PC007248Linux:2
(or PC007248Linux:n more
generally).
Now, after having run vncserver, it responds with something
like:
New 'X' Desktop is PC007248Linux:2
(or New 'X' Desktop is
PC007248Linux:3 or whatever)
So I try typing at the shell prompt, the
following:
% afterstep -d PC007248Linux:2
But this does *NOT* work,
returning the following:
_X11TransSocketINETConnect: Can't connect: errno
= 101
AfterStep: can't open display PC007248Linux:3
HOWEVER, it *is*
successful to do:
% afterstep -d :2
which works, opening an aftertep
session on the vnc client.
HOWEVER, I want the whole thing to be automatic,
so that
in the xstartup file can refererence $DISPLAY, by default having...
afterstep &
will "select" the vnc display appropriately, whatever # that
might be.
Any ideas?
Many thanks in advance to anyone out there who knows
what
is happening here, and is willing to offer their advice..
Steve.

It's the -server- that handles mouse events, not the clients. It
doesn't matter if you're running your X clients under SunOS or any
other OS -- you have to have an Intellimouse-aware version of Exceed
(the server) to make the wheel work.
