Subject: sh-utils-2.0 released
Date: 16 Aug 1999 00:54:33 +0200

A new release of the GNU shell utilities is available at

  ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/sh-utils/sh-utils-2.0.tar.gz

Here's the md5 checksum for the distribution. It was generated using
the md5sum program that is part of the textutils package. You can check
it by saving this message to a file, say `announce' and then running
md5sum -c announce.

5e78d1d48ca563ca77e96b22406c4aaf sh-utils-2.0.tar.gz

For a list of GNU ftp mirror sites, see
  http://www.gnu.org/order/ftp.html
or the list at the end of this message.

The last major release, 1.16, was made way back in January 1997.
In the intervening 2.5 years there have been 13 test releases.

NEWS:
Changes in release 2.0

* hostid: new program
* pinky: new lightweight finger-style program

There are translations of diagnostics in more languages.
Here are the once currently provided:

Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Greek,
Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish

Here are summaries of some of the important changes.
They are attributed in the ChangeLog files.

* false and true now ignore --help and --version when POSIXLY_CORRECT is set
* false and true are now C programs rather than shell scripts
* fix a bug in id
* seq with no arguments now elicits a useful diagnostic rather than a segfault
* who works on Solaris
* factor can now factor numbers as large as 2^64 - 1 on systems with
  type `long long'.
* nohup no longer modifies the shell's search path
* `basename /' now prints `/', per the single unix spec
* `who --lookup' no longer erroneously reports `localhost' for IP addresses
for which it could not do a reverse lookup.
* `id user' wouldn't report a group id in some situations. Now it always does.
* chroot now calls chdir ("/") after chroot.
* `date -s' now exits with nonzero status upon failure
* new autoconf tests detect bugs in vendor mktime from Irix-6.4 and SunOS4.1.4
Your executables will be a little larger on such systems because you'll use
GNU's mktime function, but date will work more reliably.
* `yes --help' and `yes --version' print those strings when the POSIXLY_CORRECT
  environment variable is set
* who no longer does DNS lookups by default -- the new option, --lookup (-l),
  enables lookups
* the groups script now exits non-zero and doesn't print anything more
  when `id' fails
* date -u -d DATE now prints the correct date
* don't remove already-installed su unless it is possible to install the
  new one setuid root.
* expr accepts new unary operator, quote.
* expr now returns 0 for failed matches where pattern contained e.g., `\\('
* date -d DATE now works on Unicos systems
* add tests for factor and more for date.
* factor runs a lot faster for large 64-bit inputs
* date works with relative offsets involving the `next' keyword

There were many configuration improvements. See the top level
ChangeLog file as well as m4/ChangeLog for the details.

Thanks to everyone who tested alpha-release versions,
and especially to those who reported problems and successes.

Subject: X with SiS530 (on-motherboard) chipset graphics...
Date: Mon, 16 Aug 1999 21:33:26 +0100

sorry if this is slightly off-group or overly dense of me but this is my
first day with linux;

I've got a PC who's only graphics adaptor is an AGP-bus SiS 530 chipset
(it's got 4mb of my system memory allocated to it), and a Belinea 10 20
10 monitor (multiscan, I've got the sync ranges in the manual)... I was
totally unable to get it working in Xfree in either RedHat6 or Slackware
4. The first time round in RH6 I got it up in 320x200 and couldn't get
it to change mode (ctrl-alt-+ did nothing...), then in slack I got a
mis-match of settings and just got squiggly-monitor-disease. Back to RH6
and I'm still unable to resolve it...

Can anyone help a newbie in distress?

thanks,
matthew fowler

There is a virus or two for Linux, but they're really theoretical
proof-of-concept stuff, nothing in the wild. The fact that Linux is a
multiuser operating system makes it impossible for a virus to affect more than
the user it's run under. So, no virus can survive in the wild because Linux
lacks enough stupid admins that run everything as root. TTYL!

That's not a nice posting - you wasted my time in downloading,
untarring, and examining the code only to discover that
IT IS NOT FREEWARE NOR IS IT A FREE anything. According to
the source headers, you are retaining ownership of it and
licensing it using the GPL.

Don't call it free if you are not giving it away. (You hate it
when businesses con you with "free" stuff that turns out to not
be free. Why do you do it?) If only the licensing is free, say
that you are licensing it at no cost. Or better yet, just say
that it is licensed under the GPL. Honesty is the best policy.

ln has the code to make the request, linux (as in the kernel) refuses
to do it. you could perhaps hack the kernel to allow these requests
(i have no idea how hard that would be or if it'd be worth the
trouble). hardlinks for directories are set up by the mkdir command.
mkdir only makes them in the standard way.

Date: Mon, 16 Aug 1999 17:25:57 -0400

Hoping wvdial would help me with my ppp logon problems, I installed it
today only to have it cough up a 'modem not detected' message. It runs
through setting up the script and the values in wvdial.conf look ok but no
go.

I can run minicom easily. I've even tried plugging in its init strings
into wvdial - no go. I've done a cold reboot and then a reinitializing of
wvdial - no go.

The modem is a Zoom K56.

I'm jinxed.

They need direct access to the port since that is where the date is written
to and read from. And since an suid pppd program gets rid of its root
uid as quickly as possible (it is really only needed to set up routes I think)
and since chat never has root permission, the users HAVE to be able to write
to that port.

Sounds like permissions. You have to give permission for cgi scripts to be

Netscape Composer may work for you.

Please remember that in the strictest sense, HTML does not really support
WYSIWYG .. every browser may have different prefernces for rendering
pages... If you need true WYSIWYG, then use something like Acrobat. If you
want a visual editor for HTML, use Composer.

Actual details of startup depend on your distribution.
Try searching in /etc/rc.d, e.g.

find /etc/rc.d -type f | xargs grep -l setfont

This will give you a list of files which contain the
string "setfont".

Subject: Re: X with SiS530 (on-motherboard) chipset graphics...
Date: Mon, 16 Aug 1999 17:46:16 -0400

Firstly, you need a special X-server for your chipset, that you can find
at:
http://www.suse.de/XSuSE/XSuSE_E.html
The one you want is XFCom_SiS (at the bottom of the page).
Or, you can choose to install the newly released XFree86 3.3.4, which
supports directly the chipset, but that's not something I would
recommend unless you knew exactly what you were doing.

Secondly, you will probably have to mess around with some options in
your /etc/XF86Config file - for reference, see
http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.4/SiS3.html#3 . I seem to remember from a
discussion that you have to use options "noaccel", "no_linear" and
"hw_cursor", but you may want to experiment a bit.
