Hi, does anyone know where I can obtain a copy of a statically-linked binary
image of BASH? An accident happened in the middle of upgrading my system, and
now bash crashes with a SEGV. Fortunately I use tcsh for normal logins, so my
system is still somewhat usable, but I need BASH to run the packaging system
to clean things up.
I'm using kernel 2.2.1 running Debian. If possible I need bash 2.01.1 or some
version close to that, compiled with glibc2 (or 2.1 but that's not likely to
work). And of course, it must a an ELF binary...
I looked in sunsite.unc.edu, but it seems that the binaries there are not
compatible with my system.
Thanks in advance for any pointers... I badly need bash to fix things up, as
many things aren't working properly because of this (like man and any
shell-script that uses BASH).

since you're running debian, you should be able to use the debian package
manager system. have you tried manually re-installing the bash pacakge,
and any it depends on (libc at the least)?

Hi, i just installed windows maker on my linux box and am quite happy with it
with one exception... having started off with fvwm i have grown quite accustom
to having that little 2X2 pager dodad but windows maker has the "paper clip"
instead. Is there some way i can have a pager (just the 2x2 box nothing else)
and not have the paper clip? thank you.

Hi all,
Lately I've created some 44.1kHz, 128kbps mp3s that play fine under
winamp under winnt, but have clicking noises (like those cooked files -
but uncooking does not help) when played with mpg123-0.59o on my linux
2.0.36 based on Redhat 5.1 on a 21066A processor.
Most of my mp3s are ok when played with mpg123. It's just the couple of
new mp3-files that do not seem to work on my linux box. Does anyone have
an idea what the problem could be? I've already tried every single
mpg123 patch for linux alpha I could find.

Has anyone managed to run the EB CD from Linux? I hear that it runs through
a modified Netscape browser, which leads me to believe that it should be
feasible to access the info on CD from within Linux.

hey, 8088's are fun!! i have one (it's sort of disassembled tho). i'd
jump for joy if i could install linux on mine, but i heard linux can't
run on anything less than an 80286 or 80386 i think.

I wanted to do the same thing to connect to the net, but it wouldn't let
me... you've got to be root to run the network configurator (to run PPP)
Get a ppp script set up instead. It's harder to get to work, but much
easier to use when it does work.
It's explained in the howtos (or maybe /etc/ppp? can't really remember)
Good luck!

Subject: remote control
Date: 14 Mar 1999 00:39:54 GMT
Hi all,
I am looking for a Linux utility which can remote control
another user's login session, similiar to Symantec PC Anywhere.
On QNX (www.qnx.com), there is such a utility called "ditto", which allows
you to grab the text virtual console of the system. For instance,
if a user is working on the system console (say, virtual console 2)
for something and need help, I (administrator) can telnet into the
system and then run "ditto -t2" to realtime grab and share the system virtual
console (terminal) 2 with the user who is physically on the console.
I can then watch the user type the command to see what is wrong.
If I do "ditto -t2 -k", I can enable keyboard so that I can even type
command for the user and show him ...
"ditto" is real helpful for help desk, though it only works
for the text console. I can't ditto to another user's telnet session,
but I can ask him to ditto to a free text console from his telnet
session and I also ditto to the same text console, we can then share
the same keyboard and screen.
Any thoughts?

LEXMARK 7000 PRINTER DRIVER FOR LINUX (AND OTHER OPEN SOURCE SYSTEMS)
*********************************************************************
(C) 1999 Henryk Paluch, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi folks!
This is my first release of Lexmark 7000 driver for Linux. It took so
much
time, because Lexmark does NOT provide protocol specification for
third
party. They consider it "copyrighted". So, this work is completely
based on
disassembling printing files (using driver Windows and Print to File
capability in programs). It does mean, that this program comes WITHOUT
ANY
WARRANTY! Use it on your own risk only!
Current features:
- -----------------
* Black/White printing 600x300 dpi only (600dpi horizontal, 300dpi
vertical)
* work as filter PBM -> printer, e. g. easy integration with
Ghost-Script
As I stated above, this driver is *pre-pre-pre-pre ALPHA* version. Use
it on
your own risk. I'll gladly appreciate bug reports and bug fixes
concerning
this driver. I also hope, that Lexmark will change his "OSS deny"
policy
soon.

The most recent version of this driver should be available on:

<snip>
I'm using bttv with my STB card and 2.0.35 kernel (slackware dist). When
I first got the card and downloaded the bttv driver it didn't work. A
few months later I got a newer version and it was OK. I did have to
tweak the setup under the drivers subdirectory though. The version I use
now is .5.22. In the driver/Makefile I have CARD=3, PLL=-DUSE_PLL=1.
I don't think there's any special compilation features in the linux kernel
itself (except for module support of course), don't remember any anyway.
I did have to run update (WHILE IN X-WINDOWS) for it to insmod itself
properly and then it worked. Just call xtv and work with the little
blue window.
As a matter of fact. I downloaded a 2.2.1 kernel (which I'm not using
now for other reasons), and the 'built in' bttv didn't work for me, but
the tarball that I built version .5.22 from did.

The compiler puts files in the current directory or where it's told to.
Compilation scripts may put things almost anywhere. It can give you a
mess of "lost" files. You can read the scripts (eg, makefiles) and
try to determine what it does. You could try one of the programs
that monitors what scripts do. See "SmartInst" and "instmon" in
http://www.aa.net/~swear/pedia/sys-admin.html

Greetings!
A few years ago I purchased an HP 820Cse printer for my wife. At the
time I didn't realize what "for Windows" meant :(
So, I'm in the market for a printer that works with Linux. My need is
mostly fast black and white (for printing source code). Color would be
a nice bonus. I went to Staples tonight and liked the HP 722 color
deskjet. Whaddyathink?
Best regards,
