create a file named "ppp-on" in your home directory. It contains two
lines:

#!/usr/bin/bash
/usr/sbin/ppp-on

Mark it as an executable ("chmod u+x ppp-on")

The cheap ($1-$3 plus shipping) CD from www.cheapbytes.com,
www.linuxcentral.com, www.lsl.com, www.linuxmall.com, are the real
thing. 1 or 2 CDs, no manual.

The Offical RedHat is a 3 CD set plus a manual and "support". The 3 CDs
are the "binaray", "source", and "commercial" CDs. The binary cd has
the full linux operating system. This is exactly what you get for $2.

The source CD has all the source code for the binary CD. Linuxcentral
includes this CD, cheapbytes sells it separately. You won't need this
unless you want to recompile something, even then you can get the latest
greatest source for just what you want off the web. The commercial CD
has BRU, a backup program, and a bunch of other non-free stuff. Most of
them are crippled or time limited.

You can download the manual direct from RedHat and print it out.

For obvious security reasons, telnetting to the root account is
disabled. Just telnet to a non-root user and su.

Put ppp-on into a directory in your path (eg /usr/local/bin) or put
/usr/sbin into your path. (Not a great idea as /usr/sbin is really root
type programs.)

You'll need to get the disks directory from the SuSE ftp site in
addition to these packages. Or at the very least the EIDE01 (or SCSI if
you have a SCSI hard drive) and modules disk image files from the disks
directory. Use the DOS program rawrite.exe from the dosutils directory
on the SuSE ftp site to create a floppy from EIDE01 (or whatever boot
disk image you chose) and another floppy from the modules disk image.
Boot your machine with the EIDE01 disk and the SuSE setup routine should
take you from there. If the first EIDE disk image doesn't work on your
machine, try the other two in succession.

If this is your first time setting up Linux, I would strongly advise
investing in an official CD set from SuSE which comes with everything
you need and manual to help you install it. You're asking for trouble
downloading it in pieces this way. I run SuSE 6.0 as downloaded from
FTP, but I have a cable modem and consequently the full 2 gig download
wasn't a problem. I'm also well used to installing Linux.

Oh, and get a copy of Running Linux from O'Reilly if you don't already
have one.

I believe gnumeric can read Excel spreadsheets. But this requires a
GNOME installation, or at least gnome-libs installed.

You'll likely have no problem connecting through Netscape to get
to the web; however the other Internet services (mail, irc, etc.) are
a different story. Proxy Server provides support for other protocols
by installing a new winsock32 on the stations. This program provides
is smart enough to discriminate between requests to internal IP
addresses from external ones. Of course, no such support exists
for Linux. Proxy Server also provides support for some of the Socks
protocols, but that is outside my area of experience (hopefully someone
else on this group can let you know if the Socks interfaces will be useful
for you).

Good luck

Well, no, not particularly. I would expect the user account you do
most of your work as to work, though.

If you *must* log in as root remotely and su just isn't good enough
for you, you should be able to trivially find a solution on DejaNews.

Use diff3, typically using

        diff3 -mE file ancestor changes

(the -m option is specific to the GNU version of diff3)

v1.0 -- v1.0.1
  | | (patch 1)
  | v1.0.2
  |
v1.1 -- v1.1.1
  |
v1.2 -- v1.2.1
  | | (patch 2)
v1.3 v1.2.2

Let's say, in the above tree, you made some changes from v1.0.1 to v1.0.2
and some changes from v1.2.1 to v1.2.2, and you want to apply those same
changes to v1.1.1 (resulting in v1.1.2), e.g. you want to apply patch 1 and
patch 2 to v1.1.1)

diff3 -mE v1.0 v1.0.1 v1.0.2 > file-1 (apply patch 1 to v1.0)
diff3 -mE v1.1 v1.0 file-1 > file-2 (apply patch 1 to v1.1)
diff3 -mE v1.2 v1.2.1 v1.2.2 > file-3 (apply patch 2 to v1.2)
diff3 -mE v1.1 v1.2 file-3 > file-4 (apply patch 2 to v1.1)
diff3 -mE file-2 v1.1 file-4 > file-5 (apply patch 2 to v1.1 patched with 1)
diff3 -mE v1.1.1 v1.1 file-5 > v1.1.2

You could eliminate some of the steps, e.g. you could use

        diff3 -mE v1.1 v1.0.1 v1.0.2 > file-2
        diff3 -mE v1.1 v1.2.1 v1.2.2 > file-4

and skip creating file-1 and file-3, but if there are conflicts it is
probably easier to go one version at a time. If there are conflicts at
any step, you need to resolve them before going on.

You can temporarily halt the sendmail daemon by editing the
appropriate .rc file in /etc/rc.d.

(Linux 2.2.0) [root] [ ~]
 99 $ --> cd /etc/rc.d

(Linux 2.2.0) [root] [ /etc/rc.d]

rc.M: echo "Starting sendmail daemon (/usr/sbin/sendmail -bd
 -q15m)..."
rc.M: /usr/sbin/sendmail -bd -q15m

Find the correct file on your system and comment it out.

I think this means that the MBR is Microsoft's. You have to install
LILO on hda to ensure it's written in the MBR and not the boot

I'm a relative newbie to Linux, but why would you need to create a Linux
native partition of more than 8GB? The full default install of Linux
Mandrake (RH5.2 +KDE+ a bunch of other software) took less than 400MB.
When I'm done installing all the Linux software I would ever need, I
imagine I'll still have less than 1GB of disk space used for Linux
files. If you need more space for data files, I would imagine you could
just create say, two linux native partitions of ~5000 MB each, plus a
linux swap partition of about 100MB. That should be about 10GB total
storage space. Why would you need it all in one partition? -Dave

Subject: kppp won't accept password
Date: Thu, 18 Mar 1999 00:45:10 GMT

i have recently installed kde and started trying to use kppp as i heard it
was dead easy to set up. But after reading the instructions and the faq i
can't find an answer to my problem. When I try to connect to my isp, it dials
in and connects and sends my username, then it prints the password prompt and
hangs there with the mesage in the debug window saying expect password.

I have my password typed into the small window that kppp connects with, just
under my username. I also have a login script which deals with the expect and
send details which also contains my password. (actually why do i have to have
2 instances of my username and password?)

I was using usernet before in windowmaker which worked fine (and still does)
is it because i have already editted the resolv.conf file which causes funny
things to happen? i'm using redhat 5.2 with kde 1.1. kppp seems like a really
good dialup program with accounting and so i would really like to use it so
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Alternatively, there are quite a large number of spreadsheets that run
natively on Linux that have varying degrees of ability to read various
proprietary data formats. See the URL below...
