Cannot help with the KDE internal changes.
But have you right clicked on the desktop, New, Application

That's not true....
The mandrake optimizes the system to i586 version, if you use the
Mandrake RPM in Redhat, it might be problems. But the reverse is OK

I would call it a scaled up version of RH, since it does RH the way it
should be done and then adds a lot of polish.

Hi,
There must be something wrong with the default Redhat 6.2 Apache
intallation. The /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf file seems fine, but for
some reason I can not get directory lisings.
Apache is supposed to give a directory listing when there's no
index.html in the directory. Yes, I did include the trailing slash, and
yes, the directory has world-wide read permissions. I looked in mod_dir
and mod_autoindex and I still don't understand why it doesn't work.

Subject: Severe booting / filesystem problem
Date: Sat, 19 Aug 2000 13:38:31 GMT
Hi,
I'm having severe problems trying to boot my Linux box. I haven't been
messing around with fdisk or anything - in fact, the last thing I did
on my machine before powering down was installing Gnome 1.2 from the
sources! I'll try and give all information that I think is relevant, so
forgive me if I waffle.
When I boot the machine I, lilo does its job and manages to get as far
as:
LILO boot:
Then tries to load my kernel:
Loading linux
and that's where it hangs.
So I've booted with tomsrtbt to solve the problem. My harddisk is 10Gb
and fdisk -l shows:
Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 1240 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 212 1702858+ b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hda2 213 1024 6522390 5 Extended
/dev/hda5 341 474 1076323+ b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hda6 737 800 514048+ 6 DOS 16-bit >=32M
/dev/hda7 213 340 1028097 83 Linux native
/dev/hda8 475 490 128457 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda9 491 492 16033+ 83 Linux native
/dev/hda10 493 623 1052226 83 Linux native
So I mount /dev/hda7 on /mnt
/mnt/etc/fstab contains:
/dev/hda7 / ext2 defaults 1 1
/dev/hda8 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/hda9 /boot ext2 defaults 0 2
/dev/hda10 /usr ext2 defaults 0 2
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy vfat noauto,user
0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,user,ro
0 0
/dev/hdb4 /mnt/zip ext2 user
0 0
/dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat user
0 0
/dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d vfat user
0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts
gid=5,mode=620 0 0
And now for the problem bit.
mount /dev/hda9 /boot
results in:
EXT2-fs: 03:09: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features.
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda9,
or too many mounted file systems
So I can't rerun lilo!
I follow this with:
e2fsck /dev/hda9
and this splurts:
e2fsck 1.10, 24-Apr-97 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09
e2fsck: Filesystem has unsupported feature(s) while trying to
open /dev/hda9
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate
superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
So I try:
e2fsck -b 8193 /dev/hda9
which produces:
e2fsck 1.10, 24-Apr-97 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09
e2fsck: Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in short read
while trying to open /dev/hda9
Could this be a zero-length partition?
I'm 99% certain that my hardware's not at fault because I can boot my
Win95 partition with no problems.
I've heard of a tool called gpart which *might* be what I need, but
having downloaded, compiled it and read its man page on my other Linux
box, it's scaring the hell out of me knowing that I could mess things
up even further with it. In short, I'd appreciate someone sharing a bit
of knowledge and experience with me so that I can repair my filesystems
(if that's the problem).
Much regards,
Jonathan

Aside from the 586 optimizations, there is also a matter of package
compatibility. Red Hat distributes files among packages one way,
Mandrake another. Chances are that an RPM from one will have
conflicts and dependency problems with the other.

Mandrake was originally based on RedHat, but no longer is.
Major differences is RH is i386, Mandrake is optimized for i586
(eg, Pentium class or better). What this basically means is if
Mandrake runs on your hardware, it's great. If you have a 486 or
marginal hardware, better stick with RH ;>

Its possible that you have to load DSP code into the modem via
the serial port when it starts up. That would require a
"driver" program even for an external model.
I've seen modems like this that are supported under Linux, but
I'd go for a model with the code in flash given the choice.

Hi
I've got a dual boot linux/windows computer. While messing aaround, I
hosed something on my windows driev, and it will no longer boot
(invalid system disk). I can read all the files with no error from
linux.
Can I rescue that drive from linux easily?
I have another dual boot machine, so if needed, I could copy the boot
sector from one drive and put it in the hosed one. I don't know how to
do that, though... (it was just a (probably bad) idea).
(I could copy the entire drive to my spare drive, reinstall dos and copy
back, but that could take a while on my computer, since it's a bit
clunky and I'm not sure I have enough space anyway..

Make a bootable DOS disk (FORMAT A: SYS A: ), and put
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\SYS.COM on that disk. Boot from that DOS disk and
run SYS C: and see if you can then boot your Windows system. Any Win9x
machine will be able to do those first steps. Actually, it's a good
idea to have a bootable DOS floppy with SYS, FDISK, FIPS, FORMAT,
ATTRIB, and such on hand so you can make certain repairs to Win
systems....

Reading between the lines here, I got the feeling you were running the
wvdial "script" via gnome (GUI) on the "other Linux machine" and now you
want to make it run from a command line -- I could be way off base here
but otherwise I am not sure what the problem is. If you want to run wvdial
all you need to do is type in wvdial from your command line and it'll
start up. If you have the rest of your ppp files set up right it should
just take over and dial in. You don't need the icon or button in Gnome to
start it.
If this doesn't address your problem, sorry.

Make that boot diskette in DOS. Make sure that you copy the fdisk
command onto the boot diskette. Boot the computer from the diskette and
when at an a: prompt then you will type
fdisk /mbr
This will run fdisk, but NOT to partition your drive, but rather to
RESTORE whatever previous info your master boot record contained before
the last change was performed upon it. When you installed linux or some
other change, your master boot record containing the info on your windoz
partition was changed/deleted.
It may be that the actual boot files themselves are missing, and the

I often see only one choice for 'Chinese' in Linux documentation... and often it
points to the "big5" version of Chinese used in
Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc. But then there's also the a "GB" version of the Chinese
characters, used in China, so I think it wise that
the versions should be differentiated in the choices, as it's only a matter of time
before somebody does the translation for the
missing one of the pair in any documentation tree... same problem seen on the single
choice given on http://www.gnu.org/ homepage,
and more importiantly, the standard proposed on
http://www.w3.org/WAI/ER/IG/ert/iso639.htm ; indeed, it's not just a matter of
swapping two different character sets... some word usages have to be swapped, if one
wants to do a thorough job, at least for Taiwan
vs. China usage...
