Linux has a 'clock' command to do this.

SuSE 5.2 *is* FHS compliant, AFAIK.
(They even have a document on the distro explaining the reasoning behind
FHS)

And as it uses .rpms for it's installation, I imagine RedHat might be as
well...
(could be wrong though)

It seems an insane idea, but since I don't feel like waiting around for
months or more for the distributions to do it for me...

Anyone have an idea on how I'd go about moving things (or recompiling
various packages) to make, say, a RH52, Debian, or SuSE Linux system FHS
Compliant? I was thinking of doing a really bare-bones install then
grabbing the sources to all the packages, and compiling & installing them
myself to FHS specs. Problem is, I have no idea where I'd start with that.
I imagine I'd have a hell of a time with the development & compiler
packages...or are those already FHS-compliant on all Linux distributions?

And then this begs the question, which distribution is the closest to
being FHS compliant? The less work I have cut-out for me, the better.

Hi,

I have one question.
When I buy a e.g. 13 or 16 GB IDE HD and I use it in BIOS with Mode LBA,
do I have to worry where the Kernel is on this HD ? The 1024 problem ?
I use LILO.

2nd question
I have 1xHD UDMA/33 1xHD PioMode4 1xCDROM 1x Zip
What is the best way to combine them so that the HD UDMA2 ist fastest or
both HDs are fastest.

1st controller
Master hd udma2
Slave hd pio4

2nd controller
Master cdrom
Slave zip

Is that best ? I heard when I put both hd's on seperate controllers
they will adjust to the slowest speed of the device on the controller (?)

Thanks
Martin

On my system (RH5.2) the kernel version appears on the login screen and =

RH5.2 is shipped with fdisk v2.8.

Hurray for boring white text, it's my favorite. But the answer to
your question is, you don't. I'm told that xemacs will do color
consoles. I know it does syntax highlighting in console.

If anybody can help it would be much appreciated:

In /usr/src/linux/net/core/sock.c, if the TCP send or receive buffer
size is
changed using a SO_SNDBUF or SO_RCVBUF parameter in setsockopt(), the
buffer
size is set to twice the value that is requested. The comment included
makes
no sense to me, but clearly the application should get the buffer size
that
it requests, and not twice that size. Taking the '*2' out of the max()
function should easily fix this. If there is some obscure reason why
this
is left in, please explain it to me.

And the other methods are for poofs... :)

And the sound...
The exact error message was:
"An error was encountered running the ModProbe program"

Yeah, thanks, I just got them. I wonder why he made the
dlls so hard to find and download? He should have packaged all the
linux dlls in one tarball, there are about 15 different one to
download and unpack?

I'm wanting to get started with linux but there is some things I'd like
to know.

1. Most people when that use linux alot are they using it thru a telnet
session or are they or are they actually using it via the monitor and

keyboard attached to the computer? (does it qualify as a desktop
 system?)

2. How does most of the popular software work? - things such as GIMP
or a HTML editor. Is it thru an X-Windows client, telnet, or must
you use the keyboard and monitor attached to the PC?

Hello!

I recently updated from RH5.1 to RH5.2 with kernel 2.2. Since then, I
keep getting the following error when trying to listen to rvplayer in
X:

****audio: write error: 1090 bytes errno: 11

It comes whenever there is a change in the display, such as a new
window, or even bringing up GNUS or mh-e in emacs.

Can anyone help? It is getting very annoying.

Hi,

my new Linux box is finally running decently (I've got my news
transport up, too, as you can see), but I still haven't got X because
the chip set of my Hercules Terminator 128 GLH graphics board is
unsupported.

There is development going on on an XFree86 server for my board, but
so far I haven't found an alpha server anywhere - I'd be glad if I
could test it! :) Anyway, I suppose the card supports VESA 2.0, and
thus I tried to get the framebuffer server running. I configured my
XF86Config all right, I created a framebuffer device (kernel 2.2.3),
but when I start X, all I get is an "Operation not supported by
device" error.

Somewhere I read you need the fbset utility to make your framebuffer
device work. Is this true? Is this the problem? And where can I get
that utility (no, it isn't on uni-erlangen as documented - AFAICS)?

TIA

What is the proper way to handle the proc directory on a full system backup.
Should I include just the directory without its contents, or skip it all-
together? ....
