I'm the acting (and *not* *terribly* *knowledgeable*) sysadmin in an
academic lab. We have a small farm of linux boxes for running long
(usually overnight, but often multi-day) computation jobs.
We're having a truly bizarre problem. Quite frequently, this one of
our linux boxes, call it A, mysteriously dies in the middle of the
night (we know the approximate time when this happens because one of
us has a demon that periodically checks the status of all the machines
on the network and reports when machines go down). Looking at the
times on A's '/var/log/messages' file after the "crashes", we notice
that invariably it is the same one user (we'll call him X) who shows
up as doing stuff on A, although there is typically a lag of 2-3 hours
between the crash times and the time of first activity, at least as
recorded in '/var/log/messages'. X has a history of resenting sharing
equipment, and resorting to passive-aggressive methods to discourage
others from using his favorite pieces of equipment. But he's sneaky,
and always leaves himself room for deniability. We think that this
time he wants to discourage others from running long jobs on "his"
machine by making it effectively unstable.
We really don't have much recourse (other than installing secret video
cameras to catch him red-handed), but we would like to collect the
strongest circumstantial evidence that we can about this, in case we
have to present formal charges against X.
Any advice on how to do this would be most appreciated.
(Can the system record when someone presses the off or reset button?
I realize this is unlikely, but I thought I'd ask anyway.)

KJ

I'm having some trouble with PPPD scripts. When I run the script I've
written, I get a message saying that PPP support isn't compiled into the
kernel, though I _know_ that it is. I can run the network configurator (in
Redhat) and log on using ppp just fine.
I've had this problem before, and fixed it. But I can't remember how I did
it. Could someone drop me a hint?
thanks,

Look into the Linux UMSDOS How-To. I know alot off the diehards don't like this
approach but you can give
Linux a try and you don't have to destroy anything on your HD. I did this myself
because I had DOS6.22,
WFW3.11, Win95, WinNT on my machine. I have to use all of the operating systems for
work for testing
problems. And I surely didn't want to accidently destroy propably 200+ hours of work
installing all of
that. But now I have another machine dedicated to that task and this one now runs
Linux only.
Well except when I switch over to the N64 os for games.
Good luck

Date: Sat, 20 Mar 1999 02:17:13 GMT
Hi all,
I am planning to get a domain name registered with InterNIC which asks for a
DNS as a part of registration. Could someone advise how to get a DNS? I don't
want to have to sign-up with a hosting service and start paying them, as I am
not ready to start hosting the site right away.
Is it possible to get a free DNS? Does the "technical contact" always have to
be from the DNS provider? Or, can I be the admin/billing/tech contact?
Is there any inexpensive solution for me to host a site on my Linux box at
home without having to pay a professional hosting service?
Please advise. Thanks.

I don't think you'll find a Linux emulator as such, but you can get a
number of GNU programs for Win32 (emacs, sed, grep and others, as well as
ports of vim, perl and some other non-GNU stuff) which have been designed
to work in as Unix-like a way as WinDOS will allow. You can also get a
version of bash that will run ina Win32 console, though when I tried it, it
was very slow, and, of course, couldn't duplicate all of the functionality
you'd get on a *nix platform, but you might want to try it out. I
understand that there are commercial implementations of other Unix shells
for Win32. But I don't know if they're any better.
I've been told that you can get Litestep, which is an Afterstep-like window
manager for Win32 as well, though I don't know what that's like.
Unfortunately, I forget the URLs containing links to these programs, but a
search of the Web should bring something up.

If the machine in question can't resolve the name 'scandalous' to an
IP address, then no, you can't use that name. You can still run remote
X sessions, though, by setting DISPLAY to YourIPaddress:0.
Basic test: 'ping scandalous', does the name resolve to an IPaddress?
If not, ping your box by IPaddress. If either works, you should be able
to run a remote X application (if there's nothing filtering out port
6000 traffic between you and the remote box) and (if there's no xauth
or xhost restriction on the X server you're running).

I am using Concentric (CNC) with Linux (RH5.2, x86 kernel
2.2.2). Concentric does work with or without PAP.
If you don't mind PAP, it is very easy to connect to CNC using kppp
(comes with KDE 1.1).
Alternatively, without PAP, CNC works with the following
chat script that I use (which works great):
/usr/sbin/chat \
TIMEOUT 3 \
ABORT '\nBUSY\r' \
ABORT '\nNO ANSWER\r' \
ABORT '\nRINGING\r\n\r\nRINGING\r' \
'' \rAT \
'OK-+++\c-OK' ATH0 \
TIMEOUT 30 \
OK $MODEM_INIT_STRING \
OK ATDT$TELEPHONE_NUMBER \
CONNECT '' \
$LOGINPROMPT $CNC_USER_ID@ppp \
$PASSPROMPT $PASSWORD
Set appropriate values of
MODEM_INIT_STRING
TELEPHONE_NUMBER
ACCOUNT_USER_ID
PASSWORD
Note the "@ppp" thing in the chat script.

$wp_insall_path/wpbin/xwp
e.g. I put the aforementioned piece of disk hogging junk in
/usr/local/wp8, so I would run /usr/local/wp8/wpbin/xwp.
For some reason, when I make a symlink to wp8 in /usr/local/bin, it didn't
work (couldn't find some resources I expect), but when I created the shell

#!/bin/bash
/usr/local/wp8/wpbin/xwp &

You don't have a valid monitor definition for running the screen geometry that
you set up (e.g. 800x600 or 1024x768).
Go through xf86config again and set it up for the lowest common denominator
i.e. generic VGA monitor and VGA 640x480, 16 colours. Practically any video
card/monitor configuration will support that. Once that works go through
xf86config again, but make sure you are armed with exact knowledge of your
video card memory size and monitor characteristics (horizontal and vertical
refresh speeds).
Videp card memory size affects the resolution and colour depth possible i.e.
1024x768 at 24 bits colour depth needs 1024x768x3 bytes of memory. If you only
have 2MB then its not enough!

Hello Michael,
the answer is, it depends on your linux-kernel and your Win95-version!
If you have at least kernel 2.0.36 and Win95B, you can configure your kernel
with vfat-support for your Win95B-partitions. Then your can mount these
partitions easily under linux.
man mount, man fstab and read the doc-files in /usr/src/linux

Embedded Linux Kernel project (aka ELKS). Do a search on ELKS, or
I think there's a link on the Linux sub-page of my web site.

or to deal with a list of files:
tar czf filename.tar.gz FILENAME1 FILENAME2 FILENAME3 ...

There is a "Programing With GNU Software" book from O'Reilly.
