Well, I realize now that I was quite wrong with regards to Kpackage. After
some experimenting, I found it was really good about finding uninstalled
packages. However,
I am noticing some things that I really don't understand:

If I have check dependencies, replace files and replace packages checked off
when installing a package, I find something really strange happens. The
package appears to install, and it appears in the installed packages list.
However, NONE of the files are actually installed.

If I try to reinstall it just using rpm --install on the command line, it
says that it's already installed. So, then I try the replace options on the
command line and it says it is not installed!

I'm not quite sure why this is happening, because the man page for rpm seems
to say that replace packages and replace files will simply replace files if
they are already present, so if they are not present I would assume this has
no effect.

My only solution was to uninstall using Kpackage, and then reinstall using
only the check dependencies option (however, this was quite a pain to do
after I had installed quite a number of packages).

Does anyone have an idea why this is occurring? Am I misunderstanding the
intent of the command options?

Steve

Well, Its just too big to send by e-mail. Approx 400+ mb . You can
download it
from ftp. redhat.com or a better way is to buy cheap CD from the web.
for e.g at www.linuxcentral.com

It sound like your friend set it up using his monitor? correct? If that is
the
case you need to set the parameters for your monitor.

Hope this helps

Hello,
I am using the mbxcvt program from UW to convert my mbox mailboxes to mbx
format. I just tried it on a mailbox that was not a big deal to me, and
after I ran the program, it doubled each message in the inbox. Is this
normal? Also, how do I know if it really converted the mailbox? Is there
someway that I could tell what the format is of the mailbox?

One more question. How do I convert my mail folders? Or do those not
need to be converted?

Thanks,

Subject: WANTED: Software to run web hosting on my apache server
Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 05:35:38 GMT

Do you know where I can find web hosting software for linux/unix that will
automate registration of new users, verify their email address, as well as
offer server management tools for me (all the stuff I'd have to do manually
without these tools)?

I've spent more than 50 hours searching the search engines for open source
software for hosting web sites on my server and have come up empty. I've
found well over 100,000 pages that are resellers of web hosting services on
their servers. Unfortunately I cannot find more than four companies which sell
software to host web sites on my server.

I'd prefer to use open source software but since I can't find any I'll
probably have to buy one of these four I've found so far.

    $60 Webby Scripts http://w3.elonex.co.il/index-w.html
    $80 Webhome http://webhome.cyberscript.net/
    $199.00 Vlinto http://www.customcgi.net/truevirtual
    $200 Homefree http://solutionscripts.com/vault/homefree/index.shtml

I know no one who uses the above packages so I'm a little leary of buying any
of them since most perl software comes without refunds and without guarantees
it will even run on my server (I've gotten burned once so far).

It seems hard to imagine there are only these four companies around the world
who provide software of this kind. With the thousands of webmasters and isp's
it seems there would be more competition for these dollars. I'm guessing
there are more competitors and am guessing that these resources must be
hush-hush among webmasters(?).

Any ideas of other resources for similar software?

Thanks!

PLEASE help. The following may sound a bit frazzled--sorry--but
I get there once in a while after trying for hours to get my
computer to do the seemingly simplest of things.

What processes _exactly_ need to be running, with what options
for gnome sound event to actually occur? I know esd for
starters, but that's an easy one. Every once in a while, by
screwing enough with various clients with the --enable-sound flag
and by starting things like the gnome session manager and
sound-properties, and god knows what else as both rkilgore (my
normal login) and as root, I stumble on a working system.

But forget it once I reboot, or restart X. I can't get it back!
Can anyone tell me _exactly_ what I need to put in my .xinitrc
(no, I do not use xdm, or gdm, or some other annoying thing like
that) to get this to work? In fact, I can't seem to get gdm to
work, because it somehow doesn't setup things correctly with
xauth, and then can't even display the ^%@#$@ login screen.

Does gnome actually work for anyone out there?

   Thanks,

   - rick

tmail must be setuid root when called by sendmail. This is noted in
tmail's man page.

I have a few queries to which I am looking for an immediate solutions

1)
Currently I have "bash(#)" at the prompt and GNome at X-Windows as the
default. How can I install from CD any Linux based software from X-windows,
ie. where to access CD-Rom at X-Windows (Gnome) and at the Linux prompt?

2)
Every time a new software comes in the market or a new version of existing
one released in the market, it comes with the "Release #" and "Version #".
What these both terms implies, how one company decides on these two and what
is the real concept behind verison No. like : "Version 7.2", "Version
7.2.1" etc.

Hoping to get RIGHT answers in details at the very earliest.

/usr/src/linux/.config is a file created during the kernel compilation
step. It contains all the options used in compiling the kernel. If
you didn't compile the kernel yourself it won't exist.

All is not lost. You have two choices.

1) Install the the kernel-source source RPM (note: this is different
from the kernel-source binary RPM). Sift through it and find the
.config file corresponding to the kernel you have installed and put it
in the right place.

2) Compile your own kernel from scratch. You can start from the
kernel-source source RPM or download official kernel sources.

I would recommend choice 2. Choice 1 is just too prone to error --
you could easily get the wrong .config file -- Ftape might need more
than just that one file to compile correctly.

AFAIK currently there is no Ultrix partition table support in the
"official" linux kernel tree, although there is some experimental
support in the Linux/MIPS tree. Without Linux/MIPS you currently seem
to be out of luck, at least with regard to Linux. Perhaps someone with
NetBSD or OpenBSD could help you, IIRC at least [Net|Open]BSD/pmax
support Ultrix partition tables.
