Jason-

I came across your posting while trying to fix a similar problem with my
own machine. You have probably got it sorted now, but for the record
I've found that under RedHat 5.2:

- I do see a similar problem. It's characterised by a pound (sterling)
and logical-not sign displaying incorrectly.

- The shell won't display them at all (it just beeps), but using vi or
cat to display them gives an accented lower-case u and a 1/4 sign
respectively.

- I was able to fix it by typing "setfont iso01.f16" (as root, before
starting X). I selected iso01.f16 after browsing the directory
/usr/lib/kbd/consolefonts; YMMV.

- This fixes the identical-seeming problem in an nxterm under x, too

- I've now got the startup scripts to do this automatically by creating
a file called /etc/sysconfig/i18n containing the line
"SYSFONT=iso01.f16".  (i18n is used by /sbin/setsysfont).

Subject: Talk/Ytalk problem
Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 00:24:04 GMT

I have a Gateway 486/66 running Slackware 2.0.27

I am having problems with talk and ytalk on my machine. I am running
version 3.0.3 of talk. When trying to do a ytalk to another user, the
ytalk screen comes up, the after a half minute or so, I get the
following message:

######################################
# Ytalk Error #
#
#
# No talk daemon on machine.domain.com #
# No such file or directory #
#
#
#####################################

Then when I cancel (^-C), I get the following message, and then my
prompt:

"No talk daemon on machine.domain.com: No such file or directory"

If I try the "talk" command instead, I get the following message:

[Couldn't bind to control socket : Cannot assign requested address (99)]

I know I have the talk deamon installed and running (via inetd)
>From my inetd.conf file:

talk dgram udp wait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.talkd
ntalk dgram udp wait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.ntalkd

from services:

talk 517/udp
ntalk 518/udp

Does anyone have any idea what may be wrong and how to fix it?

Thanxs much-

I am using RedHat 5.2.

I am trying to install new packages from a cd. I have mounted the cd
sucessfully and have selected the packages I want, when I then try and
install I get the message failed to open /var/lib/rpm/packages.rpm ?

What does this mean ? How can I overcome it ?

Thank you,

First both user and group should be root:

$ chown root.root  pppd

 Then make the setuid bit

$ chmod +s pppd

It's all (I hope),

I think Netscape is freely redistributable or it likely wouldn't have
been included on the Slackware CD.....I don't think Slackware has a very
large budget, so licencing a commercial product would probably have been
imposible for him.

Yep, there is such a thing. Looks very much like explorer, but I have
never used it....I use linux, not win95.

xv is better for viewing then gimp, and it has the browsing deal unlike
the gimp which opens lots of windows for multiple images.

Yeop, gimp is a great image creator/editor.

OK, I was probably too hasty in my criticism; however,
it is quite annoying to see a menu item offering a feature
just to be told you have to send them money to get it.
It's merely psychological, but I'd prefer to d/l
a "WP8-light" that didn't have a "draw" in the menu,
rather than d/l'ing what appears a full version to find
that it isn't. This would be more up front on Corel's
part. In any case, it is a decent program and a good
thing for Linux. Please accept my retraction :)

Thanks for the tip to check if the swap file is recognized. If I run
'free' it also gives the values for the swap file (normally below 10 MB)
and most of the RAM is occupied (ca 36000 of 38000 available).
Would this mean that the swap file is recognized but just not used yet?
KTimemon shows that approx all RAM is used and most is allocated to
'shared'.

Any suggestion now?

Hello Norman,
thanks for your explanation !
I think, that without the first "new-line" you mayme have some rubbish in
the commandline sent with the "reset" as "rubbishreset" and so the shell
won't understand, what you want from it to do. And without the second
"new-line" the string entered at the -in this particular case not seen-
commandline will never get passed to the shell. And I think, that's why the
"reset" often didn't work as expected.

Hello,
I'm sorry to tell you that most of the single IDE-cards don't allow to
change I/O-address or IRQ.

But there are some IDE-cards declared as "IDE-CD-ROM-card", that allow to
change these things.
Those cards often allow IRQ- and I/O- settings beside the standard-settings
for IDE.
Under Linux you can use those CD-ROM-cards with other IRQ- / I/O-settings
than 1. or 2. IDE
to connect 2 more HD's or CD's.
You have just to add card-settings and hd-parameters as kernel-parameters at
boot-time.

Here are the correct standard-settings for two cards:
1. IDE: IRQ 14, I/O 1F0 ( IRQ decimal, I/O hex !)
2. IDE: IRQ 15, I/O 170

Hi,

I was wondering was caused messages sent to a virtual console
via syslog to unblank it (the screen saver). It seems like some will
and some won't.

I would like to unblank it every time a message is sent to the console.
(eg, /dev/tty6)

Anyone know a good way to do this?

Start with something simple like ping. Can you ping your ISP
successfully ? Try manually making the connection with minicomm then
starting pppd to make sure the connection working. It may that your
network is not setup correctly. Check the HOWTO guide ISP-HOOKUP for
setting up ISP connection.

The next time you user "linuxconf" it will reset the setuid bit.

You need to set the bit in linuxconf under configure file permissions.

Edit /etc/lilo.conf and make sure that the boot partitions are specified properly.
ie. pointing to the right partition on the right drive. hda1 is the first partition
on the first drive, hda2 is the second partition on the first drive, etc. If you're
installing a master drive, it should be as simple as changing hda# to hdb#, hdb# to
hdc#, etc. Once that's done, run lilo. If there's more involved than just changing
the drive specification in /etc/lilo.conf, someone will say so. :-)
