I turns out, I have and old version of Ghostscript. As soon as I
downloaded the current version (5.50) it worked without changing a
single parameter.
Thanks for all the suggestion!

No FTP support in Slackware installs, but there are other ways.
If you are making a dual-boot system, you can download the
packages to a MS-DOS partition and install from there. If
you have another system (any kind of Unix) and are networked,
you can install directly over NFS, after downloading there.

You mean that ImageMagick still hasn't fixed that memory problem? I
quit using it a long time ago because of that problem. All of the
other image packages I have used (xv, PBMtools, gimp) check for memory
before they do anything.

Hey all -
I just replaced the SCSI controller (AHA-2940U) in my machine with
a newer one (AHA-2930U2 - uses AIC7890 chipset), as I needed to use the old
one in one of my office machines. Linux can't see it, even though it's
technically an AIC-78xx board. I can't find any references to it in any of
the Linux newsgroups. Anyone out there using this board with Linux? I'm
running RedHat 5.2, upgraded to the 2.2.3 kernel. The board comes up fine
under Windoze.
Thanks - Bob

No solution as yet, no. Someone suggested that it might be a
case of e.g. Python (I think) having been upgraded and
causing the failure, but I'm not sure.
It's a real problem as it causes problems every time I
reboot. The simple solution is to avoid rebooting the box
too often, but that's not always practical.
I've read of several people having issues with Linuxconf on
RedHat now, I'm amazed nothing has been done to resolve the
problems.

Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 22:46:04 GMT
Hi,
I read all the linux groups for two days insearch of answers to my
questions. Some are close but not exactly what I wanted. Here is my
problem.
I have 12 GB HD and installed Win95 (~2GB, C:\) and WinNT (~2GB,D:\).
Now I want to install RedHat5.2 linux on the remaining part of HD.
I already have a boot manager(select-it) to boot Win95 and WinNT.
When I tried to install Linux, Disk druid can't create more than 4
partitions including the 2 I already have. How can I go about installing
Linux with partitions for swap, root, user and home etc.. ??
Can you give me a guide line of the partitions I should create and what
kind of partitions they should be ??
Thanks in advance

These are not applicable questions for Linux really. Linux is Unix, and not
Windows; this means there aren't minions of Microsoft slaves and drones out
there to do idiot work in response to a massive propaganda campaign. The
thing is You can do anything you want in Linux, and because of that you are
unlikely to see the ready-made appz here that one will see in Windoze.
Suffice to say that if you want to build your own app, all the tools are
here. If you want someone else to do the fishing, Windows will likely have
the fish.

Howdy all.
My friend is trying to install Debian onto his 486, which is all scsi.
The card is a 2840, and is recognized fine. The problem is, when
booting it trys to reset teh scsi channel, then does a stack dump and
locks up. He installed RedHat with no problems....so I dont know
where to go from here.
I looked at the options available for install, and one of them was to
skip the reset channel portion....I tried to do that as well....but it
still resets the channels. Could someone give me the exact syntax to
tell the install not to reset the channels.
Any other advice as to the problem will be appreciated,

No, we didn't like it either but we had to live with it until 7.6 and 8.x

And what exactly did you not like about CodeWarrior? I must admit that I
haven't used any of the more recent versions going back about 3 years or

I hate to tell you this but "X sucks" and "X is the worst thing I've ever

I want both. Unfortunately, MacOS X Server is $499. However as a
registered Apple Developer it can be gotten for $99. (Student Developer
Registration being $89 but that still saves $300 off both the regular
price and the cost of WinNT. Also saves lots off the price of any
other commercial Unixoid.) Another thing is that Mac OS 8 *doesn't* crash
everyday. The days of System 7.5 are over. It's still a lot less stable
than linux but even linux crashes on occasion. Remember, the problem with
"never" is that it's always sooner than you think.

Are you sure that's the version you need? The one that comes with Red
Hat 5.2 is rpm-2.5.5-5.2.i386.rpm and you can find it in any Red Hat
mirror, e.g.
metalab.unc.edu
linux.ucs.indiana.edu
Hope this helps.

I'm very new to Linux, I installed Red Hat Linux 5.1, here's my problem: In X
Windows, my desktop is bigger than my physical monitor size. In other words,
if I can't see the "Start" button in the lower-left hand corner of the screen
I move my mouse pointer there and the whole screen will shift down there, but
that gives me headaches, and is annoying. How do I control desktop sizes
and/or resolution?
I appreciate all the help I can get!

Take a look at the CD-Writer compatibility list at:
<http://www.shop.de/cgi-bin/winni/lsc.pl>
I've got a Memorex CRW-1622 CD-RW unit which does the ATAPI/"IDE" thing;
in order to use it, I compiled kernel to provide a "SCSI emulation
interface" (e.g. - it actually uses IDE, but the system pretends that
it's doing SCSI).
Works fine; I've burned a number of CDs, none of them duds. I have yet
to figure out music tracks, though...

While I think it's neat-o that Opera is taking on the two juggernauts, I'm
not impressed with it otherwise. The interface is busy and confusing. The
screen is too crowded, leaving little room to display the pages. This is
especially stupid if it is to run on older machines, which usually have
smaller monitors, running at low resolutions. Opera is indeed small, and
maybe runs measurably faster. But practically, if you have enough machine
to run a typical modern GUI OS, like Win95, Mac OS, or Linux/X, older
versions of IE and NS are probably just as good in terms of speed and
features; and still better in terms of UI design.
If there's one thing about Opera that really makes it worthwhile, it's the
terrific collection of included bookmarks. These seem to be an honest
effort to give users what they'd be interested in, rather than a tool to
shepherd users to "partner" sites (ugh). Opera's publishers should offer
this bookmark collection for download in IE and NS compatible formats. They
could do press releases, get the bookmark collection reviewed in comparison
with the others, get their URL mentioned in the press, etc. It would bring
a lot of people to Opera's site, and prehaps increase browser sales. I
think most users would be happier if they nuked their included NS and IE
bookmarks, and replaced them with Opera's.
But, I still think most users would be happier with NS or IE as their
browser.
