Using this command you are trying to extract the file vmware.tar from the
default archive, usually /dev/nst0, which is your first SCSI tape drive (tar
stands for _T_ape _AR_chive after all).

Well, tar is waiting for you to switch on your tape drive.
To use a different archive (e.g. a file) use the option "f". Details see man
page.

Well, even if ImageMagick is no good at handling memory it's
discomforting knowing that an ordinary user CAN crash the box

Much as I hate to say it, for ease of use and for those of the "just
install and use it" crowd, I must agree that Win9* is currently ahead of
all flavours of Linux. The problem is also Linux's strength - Open Source,
which means anyone with suitable savvy can knock out a Linux distribution
with its own quirks and foibles. Ergo, almost everything must be made to
suit *your* OS and *your* machine. OTOH, Win9*'s great weakness is also its
strength - it's proprietary and therefore standardised across the board.
This standardisation makes it easy to create install-and-play applications
at the expense of speed and bloat (caused by one item of software
necessarily having to auto-run on a variety of machines).
Just my thoughts. I use Linux as a learning experience (it's on 2 machines
including a gateway server) and Win95 for daily tasks because I don't have
the time to configure *everything* into my Linux boxes. Just yesterday I
dl'ed Enlightenment, but I haven't found the time to install this third WM
on my Linux box. Many others are in the same boat.
Now, if only everyone agreed to support Slackware as the "standard"
distribution... :)

The problem here (and this may not be as helpful as you'd hope) is that
the GNOME Pager is an example of an application that really does care
what WM you're running. It really does need to be able to "talk to" the
WM, since it is the WM that manages virtual consoles. (And the "Pager"
represents a little application to allow you to look at and select those
virtual consoles...)
I find it surprising that Enlightenment is *not* providing that; it is
the "test bed" application that has been providing the first
implementation of most of the GNOME-specific "hints."
What is most likely to be the case here is that the copy may have been
compiled in such a way as to omit the GNOME support. Did you compile it
yourself? Or did you get it as an "RPM" package?
- If you compiled E yourself, then there's most likely some option that
you forgot to fiddle in the Makefile or some such thing; take a look at
files like "README" or "INSTALL" in the main directory where you
extracted the source code.
- If you installed it as an RPM package, then tell us what version and
where you got it.
You can get that sort of information via:
% rpm -q -i enlightenment
and you could drop that into a file to include in your reply:
% rpm -q -i enlightenment > ~/e.txt
or perhaps "cut and paste" using mouse.

Hi Subbarao,
It looks like the driver you ran is ok but you need to make a partition on the
zip disk and then format it. This will then give you an sda1 and you then
should be able to mount it. I was doing the same thing you were doing untill I
read about having to partition and format the disk first. Type /sbin/fdisk
/dev/sda to partition the disk and then mkfs -t ext2 /dev/sda1 to format it
using the native linux file system.
Hope this helps. Also if you could tell me where you got the driver from I
would appreciate it. I lost track of where I got the imm driver from.

Another approach is to undefine CTRL-ALT-DEL and perhaps bind
some other key combo to the "Boot" action it normally executes.
I'm using CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+BREAK, since that's rather impossible to
press by accident. There's some more info on my keymapping page:

This was the reason why I went back to 2.0.36... I had everything
working fine, except I knew that I needed a different version of
dhcpcd. The problem is that the only one I found is based on glibc (and
I'm still libc5). So I started through the whole process of getting
glibc onto my machine so I could compile dhcpcd (Slackware 3.6 only has
the run-time libraries). Anyway, through some of my own ignorance and
impatience, it didn't work out for me (I screwed something up with
having both libc5 and glibc on the system). I am now happily back to
2.0.36 until I figure out what to do.

The /var/spool/mail directory itself should be owner root, group mail,
permissions read-write-execute for user and group, read-execute for other,
SGID bit set.
Individual mail files should be owned by the user, group mail, permissions
read-write for the user, no access by other, group either no access or
read-write access depending on whether your mail system is SUID root or

It has happend twice now. Mail worked fine for everyone roto and users.
Then I added a new user while logged in as root. Immediately after that
regular users cannot access there mail they get Permission denied on the own

Unfortunately I do not know what the permissions should be for mail. In
/var/spool/mail the correct owners names and groups show for the individual
mail files.
/var/spool mail permissions did show as 'blank' for owner and mail for group
/var/spool/ is shown as root root, should it be mail mail or root mail ?

Subject: Re: Why Linux still isn't my standard boot-up OS, or what are the
Linux-equivalents for these Windoze programs?

Several months ago I bought the Sams' Linux in 24 hours which came with
RedHat 5.0. After a month or so (24 hours in dog years?) I got many of the
applications working; got the modem to dial but never did connect no sound
either. I heard from an IT manager of one of my clients that I should try
the Linux-Mandrake distribution which was built on RedHat 5.2 and comes with
KDE as the default. It took a couple of loading efforts, but I was on the
internet within half an hour after it first booted using Netscape. I had
Word Perfect 8.0 up the same evening. The next night I had sound. All that
I'm left with is trying to get the AGP card working with an updated XFree86
server. Trust me, I haven't gotten smarter, knowledgeable or lucky; this new
distribution is made for us Newbies! It's not windows drop the CD and play
easy but getting mighty close!

Yeah, it could be becuse your modem is internally set at xon/xoff
software flow control and the ppp connection is trying to use hardware.
try issuing the xonxoff switch in your chat script or set your modem to
software flow control.

Subject: How to get X to use modem

Those who have answered my previous questions have been a big help,
but please don't get to vague in your responses... please note that
even though I am using Linux, I am new to the platform; I had to
deduce the means by which to implement most of the help I have been
given. THANKS ANY WAY, NEVERTHELESS!!
Now, I need help with the modem. I have a somewhat standard ISA
modem... I don't know how to get X (or Linux in general) to use it...
I tried using the modem dialer in X, but when querying the modem, it
wasn't found.
Please help, and thanks in advance.
