Do you have tcsh installed? Is there a symbolic link from
/bin/tcsh to /bin/csh?

Probably it is trying to run it under some flavor of Bourne shell.

If you have files /usr/lib/libcrypt.a or /usr/lib/libcrypt.so,
add "-lcrypt" at the link stage.

The non-shadow version comes in "util-linux". For the shadow version,
perhaps try the "shadow" package.

You get billed by the phone company or by your ISP? If by the Telco (or

US, and I'd like to know what rhetoric they used.

based on my experience with egcs over the past year, not much.

the pentium classic seems to be hypersensitive to scheduling, but the
i686 (i have a pentiumpro) seems have roughly the same performance
(using time on a few of my programs) for compiles with -march=i386,
i486 or pentiumpro. -march=pentium hurt speed by about 10%.

Is the file "/usr/bin/make" there? Probably it was never

'licq' works nice for me. There's also 'gnomeicu'

For licq you'll need the 'qt' libraries. For 'gnomeicu' you'll need gnome
stuff. Go to http://freshmeat.net/ and search for these there.

Subject: URGENT! Linux will NOT install!
Date: Sat, 27 Mar 1999 23:25:32 GMT

Dear friends:

Finally got my Red Hat Linux 5.2 yesterday Friday form Cosmos Engineering.
Unfortunately, they are usually closed today and Sunday.

A friend of mine, who is a computer expert (but NOT a Linux expert) has
tried for the past two hours to install Linux following the strict
instructions in the Linux on a Disk User's Guide. We called Cosmos twice
and, though they were officially closed, their manager tried to help us but
to no avail. We managed to install the floppy boot disk and the CD but when
removing the floppy and CD, we could not get it to load Lilo on the 4.3 gig
separate Linux Disk. We kept getting a LI message. It never got beyond that
"LI" message no matter what we did with the CMOS.

If anyone would be so kind as to help us, I will be more than happy to
reverse all telephone charges (within the United States only). Just write
to me at my email address and I'll give you my private telephone line. You
can then call me and I'll call you right back or you can send me your
number by email and I'll call you at my expense.

Some of you may have seen my many postings to the Linux lists. I am very
excited about installing and configuring and using Linux, so you can
imagine how depressed I am about all this.

By the way, I have two phone lines, so that should makes things much
easier.

My system is: NEC Pentium 166, 64 RAM meg, ATI video card, SoundBlaster PnP
compatible sound card, MultiSync E500 monitor.

Thank you so very much.

From: Michael Lillie <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Sound in kernel
Date: Sat, 27 Mar 1999 17:42:51 -0600

I have a couple of questions about compiling the kernel. I am running
SuSE Linux 6.0 using the 2.0.36 kernel on a 350 Mhz AMD K6-2 with 3DNow.
I have a 8 meg AGP ATI Mach 64 graphics card, and a Creative ViBRA16X PnP
sound card.

Now I can use OSS 3.7.1z and get sound, but this version won't work under
2.2.X kernels. I am thinking of upgrading to the 2.2.3 kernel.

What I need to know is what settings do I need to select and what values
to put in to get sound to work?

I have tried several things and nothing works. This is the settings OSS
uses:

Creative ViBRA16X PnP (HALF DUPLEX)
Device: SoundBlaster DSP (audio and MIDI) chip (enabled)
I/O Port = 220
IRQ      = 5
DMA (A) = 1
DMA (B) = 3
Device: SoundBlaster MIDI port (MPU-401) (enabled)
I/O port = 330
Device: OPL3 FM Synthesizer (enabled)
I/O port = 388

The last line is shaded out.

When I try to set the kernel to that settings in Sound, and the kernel
compiles with no errors, but I get no sound with programs that has sound
and did work with OSS. I've even tried making the Sound as a module.
Same thing.

Does anyone have a Creative ViBRA16X PnP card that has compiled it in the
kernel who could give me the exact settings to activate which ones to say
no to and correct values to enter so I can get sound without using OSS?

The manual that came with the sound card isn't too helpful as they show a
setting for something that they don't explain what it is for.

Michael.

Reply-To: 127.0.0.1

Is it possible to do a *complete* Linux installation to /hdd, the 4th
IDE hard drive, (the slave drive on the secondary IDE channel)?

I know that it used to be a fairly easy process, using the old install
script that Slackware used, way back when (93/94?), to install the
WHOLE Slackware Linux package to /hdd and install LILO to the mbr of
/hda.

It worked great on several different systems! But is this still an
option?

>From the Red Hat 5.2 manual:
2.7.4.1 BIOS-Related Limitations Impacting LILO
"LILO is subject to some limitations imposed by the BIOS in most
Intel-based computers. Specifically, most BIOSes can't access more
than two hard drives" <snip>

This is simply NOT correct. Maybe *some* can't, but the vast majority
of BIOSes (in use today) can see FOUR IDE drives. Is Slackware
shackled by this constraint now also?

>From my experience with the Red Hat install script (RH5.0) there is
absolutely NO way of installing Linux to /hdd. It is not an option!
You are *forced* to install Linux on either /hda OR /hdb, in other
words it can only be installed to a drive on the primary IDE channel!
I quoted the Red Hat 5.2 (what Mandrake 5.3 is based on) manual
because it appears to have the same rigid rules as RH 5.0: no installs
to /hdc or /hdd due to BIOS limitations :( . This seems like a huge
step backwards to me. I'm probably like a lot of other people out
there in that I have no more room on /hda and /hdb and /hdc is pretty
full also <g>. I have an old 2.5 gig IDE hard drive that I would like
to make my fourth and final drive (/hdd) and dedicate the whole thing
to a fresh Linux installation (I wanted to try Mandrake 5.3).

Red Hat and it's variants won't allow me to do this. Will Slackware
(still) allow this?

Thanks for your patience. . .

We have a problem in here with our small LAN server. We have telnet
accounts from the PCs in the LAN to the Linux server. When they log out,
the connection still seems to exist. So, 'who' also returns users that
have logged out eg an hour before. It can get really bad, up to a 1day
delay between logging out and really not being in the 'who'-list.
This gets annoying because one can get messages from users that are not
logged in anymore. Talks crash too. When one tries to talk with another
user on the network, user names are cludged - even using the tty device
as a parameter to 'talk' does not work.
The system is a Slackware distribution updated with a 2.0.36 kernel.
Does anyone know of this problem?

Thanks,

Pieter

Unless you're browsing across subnets you don't need WINS or LMHOSTS.
NETBIOS will find other machines on the local network by broadcasting.

The Samba package includes smbclient which allows your Linux box to
connect to NT shares and printers. It's sort of like using ftp though.
I've seen where they are working on a more graphical front end to it
but I haven't tried it so not sure how it works.

The manual pages in some cases are not detailed enough. I once tried to
write a very simple program that uses the <vga.h> library, but couldn't
figure out how to make it run. I don't want to go off topic, but it couldn't
find the library when the library was there, even when i tried to specify

Probably the best book on Linux I've ever gotten was "Linux: The

It jsut a reprint of everything from http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP -
worth the $$$ once you start printing out howtos and seeing how much

Atleast they don't try to hide the fact like so many of the horrible

I've just compiled the kernel and have /vmlinuz,now what do I do. I have
Win98 on my hda and Linux has it's own drive (hdd). Right now I boot with a
floppy when I go into Linux, but it still boots 2.0.36. What is the command
to have Lilo put the new /vmlinuz onto a floppy so that I can boot with the
new kernel the same way that RH5.2 let me at install?
