Subject: Linux 2.2 is very unstable

Apparently for me Linux 2.2.x is not as stable as everyone says.

The first more minor problem I got, is that of the
Video-for-Linux-drivers. With some application it works great, but with
some others the whole system freezes. I should not really call this a
problem though, since all programs warned me beforehand that the
video4linux interface is still in development, and so someone who cannot
afford a crashing system should simply not use these programs.

But there is a more serious matter I have discovered. It is about kmail,
as it is in the KDE 1.1 package. When I use the kernel 2.2.4 and I click
on the "Spellchecking-Icon", my screen is getting plastered with nearly
19 error-messages telling something about "major wrong opcode" (or
something similar). After that, the system continues to run, what I
realize by watching the KDE-clock or by the screen-safer.
Nethertheless, the keyboard is locked, I have no way of pressing
<Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Backspace>. The mouse moves but does not react to pressing
any button. Switching on Numlock does not work either.
I tried this in both the root-mode and the user-mode. It was the same.

When I tried "Spellchecking" under Kernel 2.0.36 (SuSE 6.0 standart
kernel), my screen got plastered with error-messages again, but this
time it continued and continued. So I shut down the X-Server by
<Alt>-<Ctrl>-<Backspace>. This time it worked. Kmail continued to run,
taking up 90% of the CPU-time. I "kill -9"ed it, and it was gone.

My problem is not that Kmail gives me these error-messages, I probably
have not configured spellchecking right, my problem is that Linux should
be able to cope with such an "gone-crazy-application" and it should shut
it down by itself, or give me at least the possibility to do it myself
as Kernel 2.0.36 did.

Is there any way to reserve some CPU time, so that, for example, I
always got 3% of the CPU left, to shut down any application.

Some hints and comments would be appreciated.

Greetings,

Alexander Lehmann

Hi,
I am running the AnotherLevel window manager, that comes with Redhat
5.2. I am experiencing two minor, perhaps related problems. I would
greatly appreciate your help in resolving them.

When I start Xwindows, the file .FVWM2-errors displays the following
line at the very end:

*FvwmTaskBar: cannot open console

When I try to use a program such as showkey, it exits with the error
message

Couldnt get a file descriptor referring to the console
Exit 1

I have enabled "NEED_CONSOLE" in the fvwm2rc.defines.m4. I have also
tried starting a console from the command line, just as
fvwm2rc.init.m4. A console window seems to open, but the above error
message persists.

The second problem has to do with the "decors" part of the fvwm2
inializatialization. In my startx script, I first start a couple of
nxterms and then use RunWM to invoke the window managers. The nxterms
that get started do not conform to the options (such as ClickToFocus)
and buttons (minimize, maximize, close) that I specify in the
fvwm2rc*.m4 and decors/FVWM95 files in the directory
/etc/X11/AnotherLevel. If I invoke the Restart command from the Start
Menu, then they seem to take effect. I changed the fvwm2rc.m4 file so
that the a Restart happens as soon as the window mangers is started.
This seems to solve the problem, but it now takes twice as long to start
Xwindows, as all the fvwm2rc*.m4 files get processed twice. But I am
wondering if there is a cleaner, more efficient way to solve this
problem.

Thank you very much for your help. Please send a copy of your replies

I'm trying to do this in a perl script...

    `tar -cfz $logDir/oldLogs/$filename.tgz $logDir/dailyLogs/*`;

$logDir is something like '/path/to/directory'

My goal is to copy archive all the files in 'dailyLogs' to a file
named '$filename.tgz' in 'oldLogs'

I get this message:

tar: can't add file
/webadmin/home/web1/nbc/public_html/data/oldLogs/199711.tgz
: No such file or directory

What am I doing wrong?

Hello,

To fix this put the following in your login script (.bashrc, .tcshrc,
etc...)

stty erase ^H

This will make your backspace key work as it should in all your
programs.
As for why it worked before without this line and it won't now who
knows. I have had
it work before too without the above line but then it mysteriously
stopped working. Maybe some
change I made to some of my startup and login scripts.

It is somewhere on a RedHat RPM distribution, just look for
"calendar-8.4-3" (which is the one I dowloaded not too long ago)
from one of the sunsite's.

I think this is the calendar you describe (I use it since HPUX and
now at home on Linux; the date format seem to vary between the various

OK, Let's try this again. I can't get copy and paste to work. With or
without the mouse. In other words the problem don't appear to be with the
mouse. I have tried 4 different mice, both two and three button. The
shift-insert keys don't paste.

This problem appears to be with the X-Windows system itself. Does anyone
have any suggestions I could try?

It's definatly not the mouse or the windows manager.

Because it's not a drivel? Source packages are only half of the thing.

1) SRPM is the monolith. It contains of the pristine source + patches,
right, but you can't do (download new variant of patch; apply to the
local copy of the pristine source; rebuild) from cron. Compare size of
patch with the size fo whole thing. Count the bandwidth difference.

2) source dependencies do not coincide with binary dependencies. Again,
no (see that foo had changed; see whether you have everything you need
to rebuild it up-to-date; update what needs updating; rebuild) from cron.

3) binary dependencies *are* essential. I.e. if you don't have <foo> and
<bar> requires it it should refuse to install. Ditto for situations when
<foo> is present but is too old.

4) result of the build may depend on the build order. Hint: autoconf.

That's it. AFAIK rpm takes care (partially) of #3. dpkg & friends take care
of #1 and #3. Ports system takes care of #1, #2 and #4 (which gives you
#3 on source upgrades, but not guarantees it on binary upgrades). None of
those systems is ideal. #2 and #4 are pretty valid things and that definitely
makes your flame uncalled for.
Could you please explore WTF you are talking about before making
a fool of yourself in public? And keep advocacy where it belongs. Thank
you.

Yes necessarily, they perform two different functions. Telnet
uses tcp/ip to connect to a service on a given host. The
default service is login, but another service can be specified.
Login is not similar to telnet, but rather is similar to the
other services available via tcp/ip such as echo, daytime, pop3,
smtp, nntp, etc.

Note that the mentioned intent to replace login with telnet in
inittab is missing the point that login is not in inittab, but
rather getty is. There is a similarity between the functions of
getty and telnet, and *that* is what needs to be explained to
Stephen. Both provide access to services, some of which are the
same or similar... but getty provides access via a serial line
and telnet provides access via a tcp/ip connection. (And of
course the tcp/ip connection might even be provided over a
serial line that was set up using getty.)

Actually Redhat does "develop" they just don't develp the kernel. This
is a good thing from my perspective. Not only has Redhat developed
RPM they are responsible for many drivers currently on the market.
With out this "development" Linux would not be where it is today.

However if you feel its required I will restate my opinion this way "It
would be foolish for REDHAT not to package a 686 specific version of
LINUX". A well tuned 686 version of Linux would certainly extend the
life of a lot of desktop machines and provide a high performance
platform to compete against the RISC machines. Also once SMP is
nailed down the prospect for Merced ever being cost effective diminishes
quickly.

the print filter is still there at the path it gives you and that it is

Think non technical for a change. Linux is a great operating system if you
are technically minded - which I assume all of us in this NG are ;) - but
for ordinary small business owners, it is a complete mystery. At least
Windows NT looks like something they know, and they don't have to learn
command line syntaxes for doing basic admin tasks.

I have no particular axe to grind with either the NT or Linux side (although
I am a consultant for MS products), I just think there are a few linux
zealots out there who although they have technically excellent solutions,
fail to take into account that non techos are going to be using these
products.

Also, time for a few facts

1. NO operating system is bug free
2. Both Linux camps and MS spend considerable time locating and fixing bugs
3. A properly configured NT box will not Blue Screen, and will be as stable
as a well configured Linux box.

Just my two cents worth.

Outlook can use the Linux system's mail system since Outlook can connect
to a POP server. Unfortunately, the other functions in Outlook, such as
calendering, are Microsoft extentions which are NOT documented. I have

More importantly: no software on DVD.

This is from the point of view that a DVD decoder in

It is trying to add the file

     /webadmin/home/web1/nbc/public_html/data/oldLogs/199711.tgz

to an archive named "z".

When you use the "-f" flag, the next parameter is the archive
name or device name.

Try this instead (note the missing "*" - it can cause trouble):

     tar -czf $logDir/oldLogs/$filename.tgz "$logDir/dailyLogs"
