While I'm testing modems using Minicom, most of the time I get scrambled

unreadable characters like !@#$% for qwert, etc. How can I reset to
readable plain English without rebooting?

cat /proc/interrupts

And for IO addresses

cat /proc/ioports

There's lots of "information" under /proc

If your hard disk was originally a DOS or Windows 95/98 disk, you could
reconstruct the MBR using the non documented FDISK switch.

Just type FDISK /mbr at the prompt.

BTW, if your MBR is not screwed up, no need to worry, the parameter won't do
anything that will make your situation worse. It's worth a try.

but DON'T use it if your drive isn't DOS or W95/98..

You need to find the SOURCE package for procps which has a filename
something like : procps-1.2.9-2.src.rpm

Hi,

I have SCO UnixWare 2.3.1 and I want to
print to remote linux box.

The best I can come up with are the following
two lines, from /var/adm/messages:

Apr 2 10:00:49 lie LPD[31165]: Service_connection: bad request line '\1'lp'
Apr 2 10:00:50 lie LPD[31167]: Service_connection: cannot read request

Any hints?

It prints the first file though, afterwards I have
to restart SCO lpscheduler.

Best regards, Zdravko.

If you install it, you will probably find some docs in the package.

is it possible to move a running console-application to another
terminal?
For example, I am using a mudclient (tinyfugue) on tty1 and
want to move it to ttyp1, because i have to work in X11 for a
while and dont want to switch between X and console the whole time.
Later, the client should be moved again to tty1.

I know it would be easier to mud under X, but I dont want to
abandon the "console feeling" ;-)

thanks for every answer

Subject: ld-linux.so.1 and libc6

Hello,

I hope somebody can give the answer to
probably a very trivial problem.

I'm trying to extend my slackware libc5 based
linux system with glibc6. Now I have in /lib both
ld-linux.so.1 as well as ld-linux.so.2. Now I try to
compile hello.c with the "old" gcc 2.7.2 and use
explicitly the libc5 include files. And in the gcc specs,
the ld-linux.so.1 is called. However, trying to run "hello"
fails. Ldd hello gives libc6(!!) Instead of libc5.
I did not remove the libc5 from /lib, because , as the glibc howto
points out, my system still depends on libc5. I thought the
linker should know about the difference between libc5 and libc6.

Can these libraries coexist in /lib, and why is libc6 used instead
of libc5.
Please help me out,

Thanks in advance.

I think some people have problems when paraport support is compiled as
modules. I know when I was testing 2.2.0pre5 I never could get my
parallel port Zip drive to work with a modularized parallel port.
Eventually, I had to get back to Real Work(tm), but I've heard several
other people complain about similar problems w/printers and modularized
parallel support.

Depending on your definition of free & your location in real space, you
should check out Apache-SSL (http://www.apache-ssl.org). The Apache-SSL
code is free, but relies on SSLeay or OpenSSL for encryption, and if you
live in the United States and plan to use the server commerically, you
will probably have to pay RSA some sort of license fee.

OTOH, Red Hat Secure Web Server, which is Apache-SSL and some other cool
stuff Red Hat has thrown in, is $99. Red Hat took care of the nasty RSA
license for you; that might be worth a few bucks. And I believe Caldera
still sells Netscape FastTrack Server for Linux for $49, although it's
an older version (2.0, I think). Of course, if you don't live in the
U.S., don't bother w/these; get Apache-SSL!

Hi!

U can't get safer than a DLT drive (best MTBF), but i'm not sure that Linux
supports it. But why shouldn't it? Stay away from DAT. Too big failure rate.

DLT4000 20-40GB (uncomp-comp)
DLT7000 40-80GB

For restoring smaller and many files DLT4000 is the fastes, but for big
files DLT7000 is the choise.

Hope this advice helps

Just in case anyone is not aware of this

http://linuxtoday.com/stories/1531.html

I would be VERY interested in doing such a port, however as aforementioned the problem
lies with the reverse
 enigneering side.
I am sick of people saying 'just run IMAP/POP'
this is NOT a realistic option in Corporate Dilbert world(they just turn around and
tell you to run windows)
The only other ways I saw to do this are
1.as a delphi programmer in the past) in to code something that listens for pop/imap
connections and translates those to
ms exchange calls....this is relatively easy since the api and libs are readily
available for windows...
however this does mean that you have to have an NT/95 box running dedicated...but on
the other hand It's small
sacrifice.(let me know if anyone is interested and I'll come up with a prototype
 2. Do what I am trying at the moment, slave box situation again...install exchange on
a box you do have control over with
webmail/Imap/pop and then run scripts to suck mail and folders from the central
server.
3.Same as 2 but get IS to foward to your server instead
 4. Wait(could be some ) for Lotus CC:Mail to be released for Linux(apparently
happening )
I believe that exchange mail can be grabbed by this client.
 5. Do the dirty and get a non discolsure agreement source release from MS(Yes it can
be done, we had a client here who
got a release of MCIS...Microsoft Internet Services to customize for their own
use)....then simply distribute binary/lib+api

This has got to be done regardless of cash incentives...it would level the playing
field completely
Once the mail has been retrieved calendar would be simply as anyone who tried to
access outlook calendar with the bare
exchange client will see that is simply a sequence of mail messages with headers for
time ranges and content for event
name(correct me if am wrong here)

Be nice to get something rolling(even just my 'translator' proggie)

The example used in the use of links is a perfect reason for using symbolic
links over hard links. For a hard link, you have to reference the inode
number to determine the associated copies. A symbolic link is more of a
pointer to the original file. An ls -F will show all symbolic files with an
@ symbol. ls -l will show a -> with the path of the master file. My
preference is to always use symbolic links. If anyone has a better reason
for hard links, I am curious.
