My programs take zero tie eto load. But then I have a PII 450MHz with

Every tar file I have expands just fine. Have you considered that it
may already be expanded? Netscape and IE are known to expand .gz files
automatically and not rename them.

Wht would one need an IDE for writing C? The whole of unix is an ide.
IDEs were something invented for msdos because dos couldn't do

Have you considered adding the -f flag? SOmehow I imagine that you are
using the wrong options, and typing "tar -x foo.tar" instead of "tar -x

This is not surprising. If you want to crash it, run someone elses

There is Free Software ($0.00) and Free Software (open freely available

There are commercial "office suites" there are free office suites For
Linux. Why are you not against free office suites. If a linux programmer
can write a DVD decoder, and choose to publish it as free software, why
is that a problem for you?

Hi David,
IMHO the german clone of Red Hat 7 (Halloween V) is shipped with a
LiLo > Ver. 21.2, which breaks the 1024 cylinder-limit, if the
machine's BIOS supports LBA and there is a line 'lba32' in
'/etc/lilo.conf'.
If these facts are given for Red Hat 7 (I dunno) and the OT's machine,
he only has to make the entry in '/etc/lilo.conf' and got to install
lilo in the MBR.

If I want to install a piece of software (e.g. sendmail) using a
source tarball instead of using a .deb package, is there anyway that I
can tell dselect that sendmail *is* installed so that it doesn't try
to uninstall mutt, mailx etc. every time it is run?

I need advice on how to start a X window program without a user logging
on.
I have the Redhat 6.2 starting as Run level 5 and I know how to have a
program start automatically after login. The trouble is I need it to
run on a power
restore by it self. If it is in the rc5.d scripts it will not run
because it can not

Check out the Hardware-HOWTO on www.linuxdoc.org (visit www.xfree86.org
for video chip compatibity).
Rule-of-thumb: Internal Modems *tend* to be controllerless. *Most*
controllerless are not supported by Linux. (A *few* are.)
Bleeding edge video cards can be problematical, although since the X
server is a separate program/process from the base kernel, it is often
possible to download a beta X server from www.xfree86.org and install
it. Also: I hear the SuSE often has X Servers for bleeding edge video
cards (www.suse.com).
Sound cards: *I* have no clue.
The only other issue is DMA IDE controllers -- not all are supported *in
DMA mode*. All are supported in good old PIO mode.
Note: the Hardware-HOWTO (and www.xfree86.org video chip compatibity
list) will not list by motherboard. You need to get the specs. from the
MB maker and get the chip set equiv. for the various integrated parts.
I.e. is the integrated sound a SoundBlaster clone? Is the video chip a
Mach64 clone? And so on.

Look in the file:

Install Win98 first, otherwise it will stomp on linux' boot
loader.

Microsoft operating systems insist on booting from the first
primary partition on the first physical device. There are ways
around this, but if you're starting fresh, why bother. Other
operating systems, including linux, do not share this
limitation. Install your linux partitions as logical partitions
inside an extended partition and you shouldn't have any problems.
> Can i have and exmaple of how much space for each

As much as you can spare. Just guess at first and then further
down the road you can repartition to redistribute the space to
fit your needs, once you find out what they are...

Most likely the kernel driver is not loaded or failing to load....do
lsmod and see
if module NVdriver is present or not. Is NVdriver.o present in
/lib/modules/2.2.x/
directory or subdirectory? If yes, does running "depmod -a" work without
errors.

Neither.

I have nothing against free software. I just resent the idea that linux-
people seem to think that free OS gives them right to get everything free.
You can write a free dvd-decoder. But if it decodes css, making this
software costs you a license fee. If you can or want to pay the license and
then distribute the software, its OK. But as long as you obtain the
decryption keys by ripping, stealing or reverse engineering, I don't
consider it OK in any way. The license costs 10000 dollars and there are no
per-product royalties. If a company pays this and then someone takes
advantage of it for free, its stealing IMO. And that's what i'm against.
If there would be enough market for DVD-player for linux, there would be
one. I don't think it would be that difficult to implement. Instead, linux
people want it for free and no-one sensible is going to pay 10k for a
license and then give it away for free.

Subject: ncurses5 questions
Date: Wed, 03 Jan 2001 19:51:02 GMT
There are a few packages I want to install that all require ncurses5.
However, there's also a lot I don't want to upgrade if I don't have to
that requires ncurses4. Is forcing the ncurses5 upgrade going to cause
problems? Both ncurses4 and ncurses5 seem to share the same terminfo
files in /usr/share - are there any differences between these files
from the two ncurses version? If so, would they render ncurses4
unusable?
FWIW, the change log shown for the latest Red Hat ncurses5 RPM makes it
appear that ncurses5 and ncurses4 aren't too different.

Subject: [Help] Problems with network and remote X apps
Date: Wed, 03 Jan 2001 20:32:41 +0100
Hi all,
I would greatly thank your help with this problem I've run through.
I'm administering a machine running Linux Red Hat 6.2. They've been
running ok for a long while. Then, due to some recently discovered
security holes I updated the kernel to the latest stable release
(namely, 2.2.18). So I downloaded the sources, unpacked, configured,
compiled and installed the brand new kernel. So far so good. Everything
was doing all right. Well, not so. I've found network is not going on so
well.
Right after booting everything is fine. But very soon afterwards the
network services to the machine start decaying. While I can do usual
telnet, ftp and rlogin, I prefer ssh. But after the kernel update, ssh
connections to the updated machine take an eternity to get on. That, in
the case I finally success loging in. Then if I start any remote X
Window application, the host will create the process (ps tells it) but
no window is showed remotely. Nothing has been changed in the client
machines, so the problem must be on the server, because everyuthing was
fine before. I haven't been able to find out much about why. All the
syslog is dumping in the messages file are messages like:
========
Jan 3 20:01:32 condor pam_console[802]: can't find device or X11 socket
to examine for 1
========
The same problem arises if I connect through telnet or rlogin and then
set DISPLAY (and xhost in the client machine): the application won't
work.
Worst, after some time running every network service in the server
is down. I mean, it doesn't asnwer telnet, nor ftp, in some cases, not
even a simple ping.
That's the problem. I would thank whatever suggestion on things to
check or try. I cannot figure out what's wrong, since I have NOT changed
neither the hardware nor the operating system setup.
Thanks in advance.
Greetings!
Jos Manuel

It is correct that way, though you may not like it. You could add those
directories to root's path. The reason extremely little is in root's
path is to make it more difficult for crackers to sneek in trojan
horses.
