A few thoughts...

Are you able to reliably (without pauses or timeouts) transfer large
files from box to box using another mechanism such as ftp?

Are you getting kernel messages like "Transmit timed out...resetting"
(which is often a symptom of using the tulip network card driver on an
SMP machine)?

Have you verified that NFS works reliably on both machines, perhaps
using a third machine to test with, so you know you don't have to
reinstall NFS on either machine?

If you have an app writing over NFS, make sure it writes in blocks of
data (say, records or even groups of records) instead of character by
character for lower network overhead.

Subject: KERNEL COMPILING WOES!
Date: Fri, 02 Apr 1999 17:27:14 GMT

I am finishing up compiling the 2.2.5 kernel on my RedHat 5.2 dist. I
have successfully done this before so I know it works - except for this
time, and I don't know why.

The kernel compiled and I am in the finishing stages, setting up the
symlinks in the /boot directory and creating an initial ramdisk. This is
where the problem happens. Here is the scenario and error message that I
get:

/*
# ls -l /boot/vmlinuz*
     lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 Apr 2 10:31
/boot/vmlinuz -> vmlinuz-2.2.5
     -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 454349 Nov 17 13:11
/boot/vmlinuz-2.0.36-1
     -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 565005 Apr 2 10:01
/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.5

# mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.2.5.img 2.2.5
mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/loop0 as a block device
        (maybe 'insmod driver'?)
Can't get a loopback device
*/

None of the documentation make any mention of this so I am at a loss.
The odd thing is - I had just done this successfully 30 minutes prior. I
realized after SUCCESSFULLY rebooting into the new kernel that I had
forgotten to add DOS filesystems into the kernel so I went back,
reconfigured .. recompiled .. and when I tried to make the initrd again
(as shown above), it wouldnt happen. Any thoughts?

Thanks - IK

trn is a _far_ better newsreader. It isn't GUI, and it
doesn't use multiple fonts and fancy images.

But it will do just about any other trick you can imagine, and
it lets you use your favorite text editor when you write
articles too. The way that I invoke it is: rn -I -K -m -M -q
and of course that is from a script so I don't type all that in
every time.

Another news reader worth the effort is GNUS, using GNU Emacs or
Xemacs. It has the advantage that you can also use it for email
(which is the _only_ way to deal with a very high volume of
email). It has the disadvantage of requiring a lot more effort
to set up (emacs and all), but it has the advantage of being
even more able than trn.

Subject: 52M memory used by X?!
Date: Fri, 2 Apr 1999 17:45:58 GMT

Hi I was running X with window maker, there were 4 rxvt windows open upon
startup X and
when I typed "free" in one window I found the memory used was some 25M(I have
64M mem), then I left the machine there for about 8 hours without doing anything
special, then I tried "free" again, this time about 52M memory was used! The
system load was zero during this period. I am just wondering if this is normal
for X, because "free" also told me my 56M swap spcce wasn't used by then, so
maybe X(or window maker) does need some 50M total memory to just stand there
and when both swap and enough mem are available it prefers to put evrything in
mem?
any hint will be greatly appreciated. Thanx.

Subject: X soap opera. I need help to change it ends...
Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1999 15:41:32 -0300

I need help with X11 system.
I just can't make it work anymore. It looks quite like some freak soap
opera, but here it goes:
First: My 3D Blaster Exxtreme ( Permedia 2)video card were not supported by
the previous versions of Xfree86. I managed to start fvwm2, and later Gnome,
but only like a generic card with 256 Kb Ram and at 320x300 or other
horrible resolution. Many aplications, like control-panel weren't able to
start saying: "can't start display".
Later, I discovered that my video card works with the new version of Xfree,
so I dowloaded:
  XFree86-libs-3.3.3.1-1.1 XFree86- XFree86-75dpi-fonts- XFree86-VGA16-
XFree86-XF86Setup- XFree86-SVGA-, PLUS my server
XFree86-3DLabs-3.3.3.1-1.1.i386, the new fvwm2, and the new Xconfigurator
and forced the upgrade, just like is described at the Red Hat 5.2 How to
page.
The worst part... Problem 1- X configurator hangs every time I select the
permedia 2 chip set. Says there is a core problem and returns to prompt.
Problem 2 - Now I can use Xf86config and select my 3d labs server.
Unfortunatelly, when I finish it and startx na error apear Imediattly:
Execve failed for /etc/X11/X
Other errors apears but they are generic.
What can I do? There is another good X system ( free or warez) that I can
use insted of Xfree?
Help me so I can use the Linux full power!!!!

Linux is unix (i.e., not designed in Redmond), it doesn't
require a reboot to make changes.

But note that /etc/services is just a list of ports, and that
_listing_ is the only service it provides. Hence editing the
list "activates" the listing, but that doesn't mean that a
service listed in /etc/services is made enabled or disabled.

For an example of what /etc/services does, try this command:

   telnet localhost daytime

And you will probably get something like this:

   tanana:floyd ~ >telnet localhost daytime
   Trying 127.0.0.1...
   Connected to localhost.
   Escape character is '^]'.
   Fri Apr 2 07:50:18 1999
   Connection closed by foreign host.

Then, edit /etc/services and by putting a '#' in front of the
lines that have "daytime" as the port:

   ...
   iscard 9/udp sink null
   systat 11/tcp users
   #daytime 13/tcp
   #daytime 13/udp
   netstat 15/tcp
   ...

And now try the same telnet command again:

   tanana:floyd ~ >telnet localhost daytime
   daytime: bad port number

OK? Now try the same thing using the port by its number

   tanana:floyd ~ >telnet localhost 13
   Trying 127.0.0.1...
   Connected to localhost.
   Escape character is '^]'.
   Fri Apr 2 07:54:30 1999
   Connection closed by foreign host.

The "daytime" port still works fine, but telnet can't find it by
name.

To deactivate the daytime service itself, see /etc/inetd.conf and
read the man page on inetd(8).

You need to send an HUP signal to your inetd process:

killall -1 inetd

If this fails, try manually stopping and restating inetd. How to do this
depends on the startup scripts for your distribution. For debian:

/etc/init.d/netbase stop
/etc/init.d/netbase start

For Redhat:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/inet stop
/etc/rc.d/init.d/inet start

Hope this helps

It could be that the video player is getting bumped back and forth
between processors and is falling out of the cache in the process.
There's a compile-time constant that you can alter to increase
processor affinity under SMP, but I don't recall what it is off the
top of my head. It was mentioned recently on linux-kernel.

Of course, I could be completely wrong.

HI Jeff,

in fact I am running gated and routed on the client box too, so that

I also have somehow to tell the client machine

I dont know about turning it off, but if you still want to use your old password,
just copy the old shadow password field into your new shadow files. If you dont have
the old password already crypted, go find a crypt program and run the password
through it, copy the output into the password field of shadow.

chat does not explicitly talk to any device. You call if from another
program (like pppd). The other program opens the device before it
calls chat.

To specify a device when you call pppd... er... well... um... you
specify the device.

OK, here are some more questions for the experts:

What issues do I need to be aware of when I am redoing the same software on
another OS and another DBMS. Do the datastructures (the table fields if you
wish) have to be identical?

What if the new application that I'm writing has more fields than the old
one?
What if it has less?
What if the new field has a different size? (smaller or bigger)
What it has a totally different name?
...
...

Please feel free to explain whatever you can :)

1) Verify you have an entry in your /etc/inetd.conf for rsh. It should look
something like:

shell stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.rshd

2) Put an entry in your ~/.rhosts file that looks like:

machine username

where 'machine' is the hostname or ip address you gave your Windows 95 box.
You may need to add to /etc/hosts if you use a hostname. username is the
username you log in with in Win 95.

Hope that helps

Free doesn't really tell you the correct information...well, it doesn't
tell you what you think you want. Linux uses mem for buffering file
reads. This memory is returned to applications if they need it. So, to
tell how much memory is 'free' you need to add 'free', 'buffers', and
'cached' fields together. Just to prove this to yourself, run a largish
application after your 'free' and look again. You'll see the buffer
field down, but no swap being used.

most people i know are somewhat discouraged by the resources needed, but
then just ignore it when they see the pricetag, esp with wine making such
rapid process.

Well if things keep going they way they are going, ID could register a
trademark on quake and then the owning party would be forced to give it
to them...

First make sure the hardware you get is compatible.
Mainly the Video card and the sound card.

You didn't mention a modem. Are you going to get one?

Am I the only one who doesn't like big monitors? I don't like anything
bigger than 15".

Subject: hacked /bin/login: can't replace it
Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1999 13:34:09 -0600

Howdy.

Last week my Linux box was comprimised by the wu ftpd security hole. (It
figures... the only ports I have open are ftp and ftp-data :)

Luckily I was at the terminal when the lamer broke into the system. I yanked
the ethernet cable and in doing so prevented all but minor damage.

I have used RedHat's rpm utility to clean up the entire system. All I have
left to replace is /bin/login. Strangely enough, I can not. When I try to
perform operations against the file, I receive a "operation not permitted"
error. Such operations consist of 'mv', 'rm', creating a hard-link to it via
'ln', editing and trying save it via 'vi', 'chmod' to something other than
04711, 'cp' the correct login binary over /bin/login, etc.

The error almost sounds like a hardware defect, however, fsck is not
complaining that there is a problem with the filesystem.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Cheers,
cjr
