THANX !!!!!! :) :)
ok, thanx for recovering about 3 Gigs of dowloaded music ! :) Im really happy
now, as u can see, but i still have a few questions....
Whats the difference between Fstype and Partition type? Because it IS a vfat,
but it is also a Linux-partition (83). Can i make it a ext2, true linux
partition without harming the data (MUSIC !!)? And if i change the type (on
hda2) from 05 to 0F, does that harm anything?
ok, that were a lot of new questions, thanx again. I think i'll make a new post
about partition-and-filetype-related-problems....
thanx,

Subject: Hisax Problem
Date: Sat, 03 Jun 2000 17:30:03 GMT
I am running Mandrake 7.0 with the kernel 2.2.14-15 . I have just
installed an Eicon Diva 2.01 PCI ISDN card and i know it is compatible
with Linux. I modprobe the hisax.o and it tells me that it is busy. I am
also having the trouble that it tells me that i dont have the
folder /dev/isdnctrl and /dev/ipppd , this is true i dont have these and i
would like to know how i get them. I tried compiling a new kernel
(2.2.15) and i couldn't get the sound to work (soundblaster 1024 live), it
works at the moment on 2.2.14-15 . I also didn't have those 2 folders
(still) and the hisax.o wasn't there either!
Need help please!
Thanks

What is wrong? Did I sth: wrong when compiling the kernel, or is LILO

Date: Sat, 03 Jun 2000 17:38:14 GMT
What is the best way to be able to read the Long Filenames
on a Windows FAT 32 DRive. I've been experimenting with the
setting ins my /etc/fstab file and using msdos as the filetype
won't allow it, but...that didn't surprise me. Using vfat as
the filetype helped some, but..didn't appear to be a cure-all
Are there any better options or is this it.
I'm running a Win95/Linux Dual boot.

Subject: Poor quality fonts in kvt
Date: Sat, 03 Jun 2000 10:54:11 -0700
I was playing around with my font settings to get Netscape to look right
and did something that has caused my fonts in kvt (KDE xterm) to display
poorly. I tried resetting the order of fonts in /etc/X11/fs/config,
default font size, default resolutions, etc. but can't seem to get the
display to look the way it did originally (sharper image).
I compared my settings to those in another installation where the fonts
display correctly to make sure I had everything right. I also juggled
settings, but nothing seems to work. The font I'm using in kvt is
"fixed", 10 point (which I believe is displayed as 13 point, if I
understand the kvt configuration file settings), bold. When I select
"normal" from the kvt "options/fontsize" menu the font displays smaller
than it should, but can be corrected selecting "medium". No matter what
I do, however, the font displays fuzzier, with some letters (m)
"scrunched" unless I display the font at 15 points or larger. Any
ideas? (yes, I did restart the font server) Config files below:

Partition type is just one byte in the partition table. Change it to
0B for the two FAT32 partitions, hda6 and hdc7. Note that the
partitions then will become visible in Windows.
No, you cannot make the partitions ext2 partitions without deleting
all the data in the partitions.
Since you have a disk used by Windows > 8 GB, it is known that your
BIOS supports extended disk calls. (An exception would be if you have
a disk manager installed for only one disk). Then you can change the
type of the extended partition on disk 1 (hda2) from 05 to 0F. It
means nothing to Linux, and it prevents errors in Windows.

Subject: Linux-2.4.0-test1 vs. ttySx
Date: Sat, 3 Jun 2000 14:08:51 -0400
Hi,
I am testing my Linux system with the Linux-2.4.1-test1 kernel (I know it is a
test kernel as the name said so). I noticed the weird things going on with the
/dev/ttySx. Here is what I have been noticing:
I have my modem conntected to /dev/ttyS2. I can connect to
the ISP using the the latest ppp-2.4.0b2 software (as required
by the inux-2.4.1-test1 kernel. For some unknown reasons,
my system just hung when the modem resetted itself after the
ppp connection has been terminated. This can either be the
reset connection by the peer or done by terminating the ppp
daemon.
Does anyone have experienced the similar problem and knows what may
have cause the above problem?
TIA.

You need to pass this at the boot prompt with a boot disk.
"linux root=/dev/hda?" where "?" is the correct root device.
Then rebuild the kernel and compile the correct SCSI device into the
kernel not as a module. My system does the same thing if I don't compile
the aic7xxx module into the kernel.
Hope this helps

I have no problem connecting to freewwweb.com here in PA with my account.
Remember you must register at http://www.teledyn.com for your account.
You select the username and password. Mothers maiden name isnt required.
Also note that once you register, your *full* username name then
is [EMAIL PROTECTED] Enter these into your ppp pap-secrets file.
Be aware, that when you run out of your 80 hours, the only error message
you'll get when trying to log in is "LCP: timeout sending Config-requests"
forever till you give up in your syslogs. It would be nice if they gave
an error message saying your 80 hours are up for this month.
BTW, anybody able to read the newsgroups at their site?
I'm using tin with the .newsauth setup with my username password and
the environment variable $NNTPSERVER all set to news.smartworld.net.
All I get is connection timeouts. If I do lynx news://news.smartworld.net
and enter my username and password it just hangs for hours.

During an fdisk of the drive badblocks are located and info on them are stored
as not to use them to write info to. However, If you begin to get more badblocks
that means sectors are going bad and data cannot be retrieved/stored to them. If
this is happening then there is a problem with your drive and it will most
likely continue to go. You can remark your badblocks and continue but you
probably will develop more bad sectors and stuff on the drive as time goes on.
This is a big risk for info on the drives.
This is why I say replace the drive. Its gonna fail. And hard drives usually act
fine one minute and fail the next. They just dont give alot of warning before
they fail.
Better safe then sorry right?

I am using Mandrake 7.0 and am a newbie.
I need to run an app from the command line without X-Windows and KDE.
I tried to run the app from the console but it says X-Windows can't be
running.
I have tried to log out and back in but there is no option when logging
in.
I also want to keep the graphical login with KDE starting automatically
because
my whole family uses it.
Thank you in advance.

The Standard Edition is probably best suited to users already familiar
with RedHat, who know that they are going to have to install a bunch of
errata updates anyway, and know where to download other programs they
need.
I am not familiar with Yast, but the non-X post install tool in Redhat is
linuxconf. It can configure hostname, networking, dns, various daemons,
users, etc. Of course there are also specialized tools for things like
sndconfig, mouseconfig, xconfigurator. The easiest are GUI tools under X,
especially for installing packages. But for anyone who does not have X
running, this can be a complete mystery.

I guess it is popular because it is so widely distributed and at one time
was the only version you could find in a store. But they tend to rush
releases to market that have many problems, as though they do not even
beta test new versions. For example printing and pppd did not work
properly in RH 6.1. I always thought this would drive newbies away from
Linux.
When questioning why someone insisted on using our competitor's product
instead of our more reliable product it was said: It's like an old car,
it may give them lots of trouble, but they are familiar with it and know
how to fix it.

linuxconf used to be able to do that (in RH 5.2). But then they added an
alpha test version of wvdial that caused errors in if-up scripts and
messes with attempted shell login, if you don't know how to configure
Stupid mode in wvdial.conf to let pppd handle the pap authentication.

For Linux to "grow up" and go beyond a yahoo's play thing as a desktop OS, it
must compete with other desktop OS's. With DSL becoming less expensive, the
argument of long download time of html email will become moot. Linux advocates
should apply pressure to developers to improve and be creative or Linux will
simply fade away as a desktop replacement as OS/2 did, another very good OS
with few apps of real usefulness.
