That's the biggest problem I have with Linux. I pull the plug on the
computer, and the damn thing keeps working! Now all my computers work
without electricity, thanks to Linux!

If you don't, I won't see it.
A priest was walking along the cliffs at Dover when he came
upon two locals pulling another man ashore on the end of a rope.
"That's what I like to see", said the priest, "A man helping his fellow

As he was walking away, one local remarked to the other, "Well,

Hi all,
I am thinking of installing Linux on my Windows95 system. I have four 2.1 Gig
partitions (C,D,E and F) on my 8 GB Western dig HDD and I have Win95 on C,D &E.
I am planning to install Linux on the 4th one ie. F.
I am a relatively new to the installation procedure(s) for Linux coexisting with
another OS (I have previously worked with stand-alone Linux system once)
especially with the 8.4 GB hdd . Is there some things I need to take care of
before I attempt to install Linux ??
Is there a site where I could find the necessary documentation especially for
the 8.4 GB HDD case ?I would *REALLY* appreciate pointers/tips/URL in this
regard. I am a little bit apprehensive about this as I don't want to lose data
on my other drives.
Thanks a lot in advance,
Chet Vora

Dear [EMAIL PROTECTED],
If you don't like 'diald' you can try the more direct route of
ifup ppp0
This will start your ppp0 connection. To tare the connection down do
ifdown ppp0
Good Luck,

If you're tempted to purchase at www.thelinuxstore.com I strongly
suggest you read the "fine print" (terms & conditions). There are
some pretty onerous lines in there like - 21 day warranty period, you
can only sue them in Arizona, and the best one of all, if they sue
you, you have to pay their attorney's fees and other costs (whether
you win or lose).
There are too many honorable vendors out there to have to put up with
this kind of nonsense.

I don't see why you shouldn't be able to run PPP over a null-modem
cable, though I've never tried it.
What are the differences between SLIP and PPP? [aside from PPP being a
newer protocol]. Is there any reason to use SLIP instead of PPP in some
circumstances?
>but you can use SLIP (serial line interface
>protocol or something) for sure.
Or try get hold or a parallel->parallel cable [such as use supplied with
LapLink] and run PLIP over that. You should get a few times the data-
rate over that than you will PPP, assuming your parallel ports can
handle it.
I'll be trying this when I get my little portable. Though a free serial
port is easier to come by, methinks the extra speed will make it worth
using PLIP.

Well, I also have win95 with a 8.4 gb drive. Here is how I did it. I moved all
my important files to by C: drive or my 200MB backup or my CDR. I ended having
linux on my second partition but since windows doesn't recognize it, it will
skip over it.
I made the appropriate boot disks using rawrite - I used boot.img and supp.img
(boot is the boot disk supp is for upgrading). I then rebooted the computer
using the boot.img disk. I used the linux fdisk (you have 2 options disk druid
or this) to remove all but my C: drive (hda1) and then made 2 partitons for
linux 1 for my files and 1 for my swap. I then changed their tables to linux
native and linux swap. I then used disk druid (remember to write the tables) to
mount (tell it what to put where) the partitions. You need 2, 1 swap, 1 files,
select the one you marked as natice and hit enter. It wall ask you what to mount
there use / (forward slash = root directory)and hit enter. Then follow the
instructions given. It will ask you about the location of your swap and then it
will format them with ext2 and then install linux.
It will want to mant a custom boot disk for your system, I reccomend you say
yes. It will ask you where to install the boot loader (so you can select OS to
run w/o boot disk) you should install in in the master boot record of your first
drive (c:).
I then I then booted back to dos using F8 to go directly to dos and used fdisk
to create and extended partition (in the leftover space) and then filled it with
logical drives. Then I went into windows and formated then to get long name
support (2 things - 1. linux uses ext2 filesystem which windows cannot "see" so
it skips them, and 2. dos cannot use long filenames which is why you format then
before you move your old files onto them).
Linux is security consious so remember the password you gave during installation
and your login will be root. Remember to create a user for yourself as you do
not want to be root all the time as unilateral power can be dangerous if you hit
the wrong command. Use (as root) adduser name ENTER then passwd name ENTER and
it will prompt you for the password.
Hope this helps.

What exactly do you mean by 'don't see kde on screen by bootup'? When you
boot, you would normally see the shell-prompt and then you start up KDE or
any other desktop/windowmanager by typing 'startx'. Of course, it's also
possible to configure Linux so that X starts directly when you boot, but
that's probably not what you mean.
xinitrc is a script used by startx, but should not be run directly.

I have a SCSI port and two SCSI drives hooked onto that port. I have
WInNT installed on one harddisk and have installed Linux successfully on
the other disk. I followed the mini-how-to's available on the web and
installed LILO on the Linux "partition" and then put a copy of
"bootsect.lnx" in the WinNT disk and changed the boot.ini but when I
select the Linux option in the WinNT bootloader, it just gives me a "LI"
and then hangs. I have tried every trick in the book (including
bootpart) to make this work.. but it won't .. anyone have any ideas?

Has anyone make an SCSI AHA2842A work with debian 2.1.
I have spent some time with no luck. When booting from floppy
after linux is loaded, it stars booting; the host is found, but as
soon it finish detecting the host, it starts an infinite loop,
stating a bug in the driver, it atampts to access the controller
before completes reset.
Is this a problem of the driver, debian 2.1 or something else?
Does this controller works with any other linux distribution?
All answers apreciated.
