Date: Tue, 22 Jun 1999 13:16:41 GMT
PIKT, Problem Informant/Killer Tool, version 1.5.0
HIGHLIGHTS: added a new piktc option, -x, for exec'ing PIKT scripts
remotely; added another new piktc option, -f, for diff'ing the master
configuration against client-side files (has important security uses);
introduced a new flowcontrol keyword, 'leave'; increased system
robustness and fixed several bugs; added more validation self-tests
and config samples
"This is by far one of the most interesting/powerful tools I have
seen for Linux administration... an extremely interesting tool."
--Kurt Seifried, Linux Administrators Security Guide
(https://www.seifried.org/lasg)
PIKT, an innovative new paradigm for administering heterogeneous networked
workstations, is a complete, multi-functional, and centrally managed scripting
environment that comprises: an embedded scripting language; a sophisticated
script preprocessor, scheduler, and installer; and other useful tools. More
than just a systems monitor, PIKT solves many of the problems inherent in
traditional and established approaches to monitor scripting, and addresses
several other aspects of systems administration besides.
PIKT is distributed under the GNU General Public License. Available now
for Solaris, SunOS, GNU/Linux, and FreeBSD. For more info, and complete
source code, documentation, and data files (all 40,000+ lines of it), please
visit the PIKT Web site at:

It looks like most people are choosing MacOS, purely as a value-for-money
decision. I would say that Be ceases to be a going concern in another year
or two at the most. What they're doing sounds quite amazing and all that,
but when it comes down to it it's still a solution in search of a problem.

However, if you do this it's better to use a .tgz or .tar.gz extension
than the .tar extension given above, otherwise it's not obvious to the
receiver that it was compressed.

Subject: ANNOUNCE: GNU MAVERIK 5.1 released
Date: Tue, 22 Jun 1999 17:16:03 +0100
=======================================================
The University of Manchester announces GNU Maverik 5.1:
a free Virtual Reality system for GNU/Linux and Windows
NT/98 PCs and Silicon Graphics workstations.
=======================================================
The Advanced Interfaces Group, in the Department of Computer Science at the
University of Manchester, UK, announces the release of GNU Maverik 5.1, a
software system for supporting Virtual Reality applications.
GNU Maverik is Free software released under the GNU General Public Licence,
and is released with full source code, documentation and example programs.
GNU Maverik is an official component of the Free Software Foundation's GNU
Project located in Boston, USA.
(A fully-linked and more detailed Web version of this announcement is at
http://aig.cs.man.ac.uk/systems/Maverik/pr.html)
================
WHAT IS MAVERIK?
================
Maverik is a system for managing graphics and interaction in Virtual
Reality applications. It is designed to address the challenges of highly
interactive virtual environments containing many objects with complex
geometry. Maverik uses either Mesa or OpenGL to perform rendering and runs
on GNU/Linux and Windows NT/98 PCs and Silicon Graphics workstations.
==================
WHAT's NEW IN 5.1?
==================
The main new feature in version 5.1 is support for Windows 98 and NT (and
probably Windows 95, although this is untested). The numerous minor
additions and modifications are listed in the change log
(http://aig.cs.man.ac.uk/systems/Maverik/VERSIONS.html)
================
DOWNLOAD MAVERIK
================
The complete Maverik distribution is available as both RPMs and gzipped
tars from http://aig.cs.man.ac.uk/systems/Maverik, and also from
ftp.gnu.org.

Doh! Ok, so I should have looked at the FAQ instead of the 'About Us'
section of the website. Gee, John, where do you think they would keep
answers to questions that people probably ask a lot?
For those of you who may still be wondering, it's pronounced as if the
'u' had an umlaut. Or kind of like in John Phillip _Sousa_.
I will now go and write on the blackboard 500 times: "I will always
read the FAQ before asking a question. I will always read the FAQ before

While deleting unneeded core dump files is usually a good thing, it has
nothing to do with the apparently lost 25MB of disk space. Another reply has
already indicated that when the file system was built, 5% of the disk space
was reserved for the "root" user.

This is a classic linux glitch! ;-)
but you see, if you use kerneld, the modules get loaded and unloaded as
needed. I have no problem using both the printer and the zipdrive, i
just have to umount the zipdrive when i need to print. The docs you
print while the zip is mounted, gets spooled onto /var/spool, so you can
print files from the zip too!
I didn't have to do anything special to have it this way, i just run
slackware out-of-the-box.

FAT file systems don't know file permissions, and thus can't handle
them. So it's no wonder that chmod doesn't work.
When mounting a FAT partition, linux assigns all files and directories
in it the same permissions, which you can't change unless you remount
it.
I don't know to which permission it defaults, but you can override
them either by specifying `umask=...' in the options field in the
/etc/fstab or by giving mount the flag `-o umask=...'. In both
case you should substitute `...' by the appropriate permissions.
For more information about mount read the man pages.
