There are this two programms:
bmptoppm
ppmtogif
so if it is okay, to do this in two steps (all formats are without any
lose by compression or similar, so it should make no different).

Subject: news server confusion
Date: Wed, 7 Apr 1999 14:01:21 -0500
Hi - I'm a bit confused about how to set up a small
news server for my 3 computer LAN.
What I want to do is have my LINUX server automagically
dial to my ISP via PPPand get several newsgroups for me.
I would like this to happen unattended, say at 3am.
Someone has suggested sn to be my local news server.
However, do I need diald to do the periodic dialing? Is
this a cron job? Do I need INN or suck?
After I get the newsgroups downloaded, I understand that
I should be able to use newsreaders on my two other Win98
machines to read the newsgroups.
I know that lots of people have done this. I guess I understand
a lot of the pieces, but not how to put them together.
thanks,
mas

Hi,
Have you tried to start it by hand on the command line ?
If this works, I would try to add the appropriate line
in /etc/rc.**** to start it when machine boot ...
hope this can help

Hi,
I am creating a dual Windows/Linux environment using Samba for file serving
on a standard Ethernet network. I was wondering what kind of X server software
for the Windows side I could use to run some X windows apps off of the LInux Box.
Reliability is the most important factor, windows will crash often enough without
the help of the X server.
Any ideas?

The Gnome suite (it's really only a couple of applications) cooperates
perfectly with Window Maker, but don't run it in 256 colour mode or
it'll make you go blind.

yes.
You need to create a directory ~username/public_html (or whatever you change
public_html to in the config file),
change the permissons to allow world reading that directory and similarly for
the files in there.
This will appear as the URL http://my.site.node/~username/
If a user then wants docs on the web she can put them in their public_html
directory and they can be accessed (assuming the appropriate permissions are
set on the fiel and directory)

You're sort of in a bind here. You don't want to use 'root' when not
necessary, but pppd needs root privs to work. One thing you can try to do
is make pppd a SUID program (chmod u+s `which pppd`). That will allow
normal users to run pppd, but it will run with root pivilages.

AFAIK X supports uo to 5 buttons. If you want the 4th of 5th button to
do anything useful you will need to use non-default configurations of
your software (via actions in X defaults file, window manager config
files, etc). SUN mice have 3 buttons.

You might try investingating your PPP configuration. Do "man pppd" and
read about the "asyncmap" and "escape" options. It might be filtering
those control characters. I think the default filters some things.
I wish I understood why.
An even more wild shot in the dark would be to investigate the

If you FTP the file in ASCII mode, the file will be corrected for linefeed
differences. Also, some Linux editors (such as vim) can be set to edit DOS
ASCII text (so it doesn't show ^M as a printing character). Lastly, you
could make a little sed or perl script to convert from one line break style
to the other.
There shouldn't be a problem viewing a text file with Unix newlines in
WinDOS, unless you are using Notepad, which doesn't seem to be able to
understand. But if you use WordPad or (better yet) gvim or emacs, or pretty
much anything else, you should be alright.

Subject: automatic filesys type recognition
Date: 7 Apr 1999 15:54:00 +0200
Hello,
we are running some zip drives connected to a linux machine. The problem
is that different people like different filesystems on their disks. The
best would be to automaticlly recognize the correct type. In order to do
this we created an entry like
/dev/hdc4 /zip/p4 auto noauto,user 0 0
in /etc/fstab. The problem is that eg if someone has a zip medium
with vfat on it linux recognizes it as umsdos. This has the undesired
effect that eg long filenames are not available by default.
What I would like to specify is that Linux should try to automatically
determine the correct filesystem out of a list I can give with a fixed
order say "vfat, msdos, ext2 ...". Any idea how to do this?
Thanks Rainer

The FTP daemon is either not running, or configured not to accept remote
connections. Check /etc/inetd.conf and /etc/ftpaccess (or similar).
Also I believe there is a security update for wu-ftpd that you should
get.

IIRC, it means that you're trying to *save* the file you are retrieving
into a space that you do not have permission to use. It's (effectively)
nothing to do with the FTP service as such, more to do with what user
you are ftp-ing as from wherever. Type "lcd" from the ftp prompt and it
will tell you where it is trying to save the files. Check that you have
rights to write to that directory.

If you use http://localhost/~username make sure you add a trailing
slash - as in - http://localhost/~username/ - this is important if you
have a dial-up account with limited DNS, as it will prevent the server
trying to look up the proper domain name. Irrelevant to your question,
though. 8-)

Yes.

Yes.

Ivo,
Have you run the XF86Setup program and selected the Intellimouse as the
mouse you are using. Note this is not a regular PS2 mouse. On my
machine (a dell with the same mouse you describe) any motion of the
mouse under X using the PS2 driver would do exactly what you describe:
sending the cursor to the upper right hand corner of the screen and
locking everything else up.
The way out is to run the XF86Setup program from the console as root.
Then *do not touch the mouse* as the program will probably come up
assuming its a regular PS2 mouse. Use the keyboard to get to the mouse
selection screen and then select the IntelliMouse driver and apply the
changes. The mouse should then work fine and you can use it to finish
setting everything up.
Hope this helps,
Niall Gaffney

I am using redhat v5.2. How can I list the packages that are
installed using rpm?
If i type "rpm -a", it just gives me an error of "unexpected query source".
Thanks,

yup. in fact, if you go through the recent bugtraq archives, you'll see a
few updates to various mailers for exactly this.
